A video of his remarks, posted to YouTube by the school, has racked up more than 1.7 million views, as of Thursday afternoon. Federer, who won 20 Grand Slam singles championships during his storied career, said his natural talent on the court only got him so far. "When you're playing a point, it has to be the most important thing in the world," Federer said. "In the 1,526 singles matches I played in my career, I won almost 80%," he said. When you lose every second point, on average, you learn not to dwell on every shot."

She took one look at me and said, "Yup, you got the classic presentation of browntail moth rash." The browntail moth caterpillar lives in treesI first heard about browntail moths from my kids' preschool. The caterpillars' hairs contain a toxin that, when brushed against skin, produces a poison ivy-like rash that is incredibly itchy and uncomfortable. I didn't touch an actual caterpillarWhat's tricky about browntail moth is that you don't necessarily need to come in contact with it to get the rash. My dermatologist said she's been seeing an increasing number of patients with browntail moth rashes.

AI skills could rival job experience in hiring decisions — and not just in techClose to 70% of leaders say they won't hire someone without AI skills and would rather hire a less experienced candidate with AI skills than a more experienced person without them, according to the report, which surveyed more than 30,000 people in 31 countries. Some companies including Google and Amazon have announced investments in teaching their workforce AI skills, but such initiatives aren't the norm: Only 25% of companies are planning to offer training on generative AI tools like ChatGPT and Microsoft Copilot, Microsoft and LinkedIn found. There are dozens of free online courses people can use to learn AI skills offered by companies like IBM and Google and Ivy League institutions like Harvard University and the University of Pennsylvania. "Less than two years after generative AI burst onto the scene, we're seeing this technology being woven into the fabric of work across a wide range of industries," Stallbaumer says. Generative AI tools in particular have seen a surge in workplace adoption, with usage doubling in the last six months, Microsoft and LinkedIn report.

How to pick a good, affordable college before applying

New York CNN —Long before you take your high schooler on college campus tours, consider this: Shopping for college shouldn’t be any different than shopping for a home. Getting into that top 25% cohort is based on SAT or ACT scores, and having a high, unweighted GPA based on a rigorous high school curriculum. Other ways to reduce college costs before applyingWhile your children are in high school they can take other steps to reduce the total cost of their education. If their high school doesn’t offer them, there is a program called Freshman Year for Free offered by the Modern States Education Alliance. Getting the minimum AP scores a college requires to earn a college credit will lower how much you ultimately have to spend on tuition.

Carolina Williams went viral in 2017 for her unique Papa Johns-inspired essay that earned the teen admission into Yale University. The first member of her family to go to college, Williams didn't necessarily have her heart set on an Ivy League education. She loved both Yale and Auburn's campuses and could see herself as a member of either student body. But Auburn's analytics program, along with its much closer proximity to her home and family in Tennessee, won Williams over. Here's why she skipped the Ivy League and how it's worked out for her post-grad.

As part of the settlement, Columbia said it is providing 24/7 walking escorts and safe entrances to campus. Columbia also created a “Safe Passage Liaison,” who will manage and coordinate the safe passage escorts. Columbia president Minouche Shafik acknowledged in a statement in April that many Jewish students and other students have “found the atmosphere intolerable in recent weeks.”“Many have left campus, and that is a tragedy. “Art is one of our oldest creations (humans invented paint long before the wheel), one of the earliest means of communication (we drew long, long, long, long before we could write), and one of our most universal urges,” she wrote. But when you watch artists making art, it is a physical experience. Different art forms affect the brain and body in different ways. Just as when we are prescribed medications, (it’s true that) types, doses and durations of art work differently for different people. History has been made at Yale University as Maurie McInnis becomes the first woman to be named permanent president of the Ivy League school. She has served as a Yale trustee since 2022 and earned master's degree and doctorate from Yale, per the school's announcement Wednesday morning. Yale has had only one other female leader, the historian Hanna Holborn Gray, who served as interim president from 1977 to 1978. It is the last Ivy League school to name a permanent woman president. In an interview with the Yale Daily News, McInnis expressed her gratitude for being elected president and reiterated her commitment to "tackle the world's most pressing challenges."

New York CNN —Harvard University announced Tuesday it will no longer weigh in on public matters that don’t impact the Ivy League school’s core function, a shift that follows a historic period of turmoil at the storied university. Harvard leaders announced the new policy after forming a working group in April to debate when the university should speak out. That group concluded that Harvard has a “responsibility to speak out to protect and promote its core function,” including to “defend the university’s autonomy and academic freedom when threatened.”“The university and its leaders should not, however, issue official statements about public matters that do not directly affect the university’s core function,” the working group said in its report. Alan Garber, who replaced Gay as president on interim basis, announced Tuesday the university has accepted the working group’s report and recommendations, which have also been endorsed by The Harvard Corporation, the university’s top governing body. “The process of translating these principles into concrete practice will, of course, require time and experience, and we look forward to the work ahead,” Garber said.

The media line fed to the public about weeks of protests at Columbia — and the administrative crackdown that followed — has been selective at best. Columbia students have made clear that that’s what drives their protests. Why, even as numerous students at Columbia and elsewhere have been doxxed, harassed and bullied, were no congressional hearings called? But if Columbia students didn’t care about their university and the values it claims to uphold, they wouldn’t have risked so much with their protests. By the same token, if students didn’t care about our country, they wouldn’t protest so vocally against its policies.

Opinion | ‘The Very Real Insanity of College Admissions’
  + stars: | 2024-05-18 | by ( ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
To the Editor:Re “2024 Was the Year That Finally Broke College Admissions,” by Daniel Currell (Opinion guest essay, May 5):While Mr. Currell effectively lays out the current admissions climate, the sunny last-minute outcomes for the two applicants he follows undermine his otherwise valid critiques. While Ivy was rejected by her early decision school, she was admitted to her second choice, Dartmouth, an Ivy with a 6 percent acceptance rate. Rania, though disappointed with her Barnard rejection, also found herself a terrific outcome at Wesleyan, another highly acclaimed school, with a free ride to boot. Both of these outcomes are extreme positive outliers these days. Following two applicants who actually had to make significant compromises would have more accurately encapsulated the reality check that college-bound kids and parents need in the face of the very real insanity of college admissions these days.

Goldman Sachs, for example, accepted just 1.5% of candidates into its 2022 summer internship class out of more than 236,000 applications worldwide. And yet, these are the facts: He accepted lavish gifts from powerful friends and failed to report them. His wife was indisputably involved in an attempt to stop the peaceful transfer of power from one president to the duly elected new one. Which Justice Thomas plainly detests when applied to minorities, because (I guess) he believes that it belittles the accomplishments of those who receive a helping hand. I’ve doubted Justice Thomas’s judgment in the past; now I doubt his advocacy skills in general. Because his arguments are self-pitying and unpersuasive.

The group that brought the no-confidence resolution against Dr. Shafik does not “represent many faculty and students at Columbia University,” the letter stated. On Wednesday, Dr. Shafik wrote a conciliatory note to students and published it in the school newspaper in lieu of a graduation speech. Of the 899 faculty members eligible to vote, 709 completed a ballot. There are about 4,700 full-time faculty members at Columbia, of which the Faculty of Arts and Science represents about 20 percent.
