CNN —A “crazy amount of emotions” ran through TJ Oshie’s mind as he watched footage of what would be American hockey player Adam Johnson’s final moments on the ice. The English Ice Hockey Association has announced that all players must wear neck guards from the start of next year, and the Pittsburgh Penguins, Johnson’s former NHL team, are mandating neck guards for their minor league players, coach Mike Sullivan has said. In the NHL, neck guards – let alone neck coverings of any kind – are not a common sight. “I think there is a machismo within ice hockey where you’re seen as being something less if you choose to wear more protective equipment,” ice hockey broadcaster Seth Bennett tells CNN Sport. Warroad’s neck guards are fitted with Kevlar and steel components, ensuring that they have enough stiffness to stay upright and offer effective coverage around the neck.

Mandatory Credit: Aaron Doster-USA TODAY Sports/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsNov 1 (Reuters) - The National Hockey League (NHL) and the union representing its players have been in contact regarding further safety measures after a player in Britain's Elite Ice Hockey League died when an opposing player's skate blade cut his neck. NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman said in an ESPN report on Wednesday that the league wants to prioritize protection but added that players have the right to make decisions for themselves. The English Ice Hockey Association (EIHA), which is the sport's governing body in England and Wales, said this week the safety of players must take precedence above all else and made neck guards mandatory from Jan. 1 for all on-ice activities. The EIHA did not make neck guards mandatory with immediate effect due to anticipated supply issues but made a "strong recommendation" that players at all levels across English Ice Hockey start using a neck guard. The NHLPA also educates players each year on the benefits of wearing the cut-resistant equipment so they can make informed equipment choices.

Devils desperate to correct slow starts vs. Sabres
  + stars: | 2023-10-26 | by ( Field Level Media | ) www.reuters.com   time to read: +3 min
October 26 - It hasn't been a bad start to the season for the New Jersey Devils. The starts to games, however, are another story, and one they'll look to rewrite when they host the Buffalo Sabres on Friday in Newark, N.J. The Devils have been outscored 8-2 in the first period through their six games this season. Sabres coach Don Granato tinkered with his lines last week, putting Thompson between Dylan Cozens and Jordan Greenway. With good performances from Eric Comrie (two games) and Ukko-Pekka Luukkonen (one game) in his absence, the team won't push him.

All three are undefeated to start the NHL season, making some history in the process. It's the first time the league has had three teams open a season with at least six wins in a row. The Golden Knights scored twice in the final eight minutes of regulation Tuesday, rallying from down 2-1 to beat Philadelphia. “We’ve got talent, for one,” coach Bruce Cassidy said, when asked about the undefeated start. Colorado went into the season as the favorite to win the Stanley Cup, and Georgiev's play is a good early indicator of those chances.

The urban forager Aly Stoffo leads excursions on Staten Island through her business, Glam Gardener NYC, and is a regular at farmers’ markets across New York and New Jersey, where she sells teas and tinctures made with the plants she harvests. Her Sundays can be chaotic. Ms. Stoffo, 28, is among five Staten Islanders whose portrait was painted by the artist Sarah Yuster for “Vulnerable Landscapes,” an exhibition that runs through December at the Staten Island Museum. The portraits highlight the work of locals working to promote a deeper understanding of the island’s flora, fauna and ecology. She lives in her childhood home with her father and older brother.

This is the first time the national firearm homicide rate has fallen since a sharp increase was recorded from 2019 to 2020, amid the Covid-19 pandemic, according to the CDC. Between 2019 and 2020, the overall firearm homicide rate increased by about 35%, from 4.4 deaths per 100,000 people nationwide in 2019 to 5.8 in 2020. However, last year’s numbers are still substantially higher than the 2019 rate of 4.4 deaths per 100,000. Despite a minor decrease, non-Hispanic Black or African American people continue to experience the highest firearm homicide rates. On Thursday, the White House touted the new report saying the overall reduction in the gun homicide rate last year reflects meaningful progress.

Centres Manu Tuilagi and Joe Marchant scored tries as England led 24-10 early in the second half on the back of their most impressive performance for years. However, in classic style, Fiji scored two tries in four minutes to change the mood, only for England, thanks to surging runs by outstanding number eight Ben Earl, to regain a lead they held on to in a dramatic finale. England reached their sixth World Cup semi-final and will go in search of a fifth final appearance when they meet France or South Africa. "There was obviously a spell where Fiji scored two back-to-back tries, which Fiji can do probably better than anyone else in the world. For most of the match, a fired-up England were unrecognisable from the team who looked so lacklustre against Samoa last week.

“It is as Australians together that we must take our country beyond this debate without forgetting why we had it in the first place. “This is a referendum we should never had had because it was built on a lie that Aboriginal people do not have a voice,” he told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation. Yes campaigner Marilyn Trad told CNN that volunteers making calls to prospective voters had to break the news to some – this week – that there was indeed a referendum. The result means no constitutional change, but the referendum will have lasting consequences for the entire nation, according to experts. “So that power, to change, to modernize, to update the constitution has been put in the hands of the Australian people.

MARSEILLE, France, Oct 12 (Reuters) - England coach Steve Borthwick looks set to make radical changes for Sunday's World Cup quarter-final against Fiji by dropping George Ford and starting Marcus Smith at fullback, strengthening his midfield defence and injecting some energy into the attack. However, while his defence and aerial skills are superior to Smith's, Steward has shown little in attack - though he is far from alone there. Defence generally has not been the issue for England as they racked up four wins in a row. Before the Samoa game they had the best defence in the tournament and had conceded only one try. England have made the second-fewest carries (108.8) for the second-fewest metres (461.3), they rank sixth for defenders beaten (22.5) and last for offloads (5.8).

There would be a referendum within his first term to recognize Indigenous Australians in the constitution and create a permanent body – a Voice to Parliament – to allow them to speak directly to government. Yes voters are much younger, live in the inner-city and voted for the Labor Party or Greens. Paul Smith, Director Government and Social Australia, at YouGov says the young-old divide in this referendum indicates a generational difference in world view. Daniel Morrison-Bird has been door-knocking for months in Perth, Western Australia to convince people to vote Yes. Gerber said far from dividing the country, the Voice is an invitation from Indigenous Australians to form a closer relationship.
