KYIV, Ukraine—Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said his forces were making small gains on the battlefield and pledged to strengthen the country’s air defenses in the new year, as the head of NATO said the alliance should be prepared for a long war ahead.
Mr. Zelensky spoke as fighting raged over the eastern city of Bakhmut, which has become the war’s main battlefield.
The onset of winter has slowed combat operations, but both sides are eager to show they can make gains after 10 months of fighting.
“In general, we hold our positions.
There are also areas of the front where we are slowly advancing,” Mr. Zelensky said in his nightly address Friday.
