But the unspeakable violence inflicted on this community has spurred a very public purpose for the family: bringing awareness to traumatic brain injuries among military members and a call to action for continued research. Other family members also alerted local law enforcement, which visited Card's home in the weeks before the shooting but did not make contact. Maine's medical examiner requested a postmortem study of Card's brain, which was conducted by the Boston University CTE Center. Through Card's brain being examined after his death, Herling learned about so-called brain banks, a collection of donated brain tissue used for research and education. "Here, I brought the very helmet meant to safeguard my brother's brain," she said, showing the commission the military headgear.

CNN —The US Army has been ordered by a federal judge to release records related to former President Donald Trump’s controversial August visit to Arlington National Cemetery by Friday at the latest. The expedited release is a result of a lawsuit by American Oversight, a non-partisan watchdog nonprofit advocating for the release of government records. The group submitted a Freedom of Information Act request for any records relating to interactions between Trump campaign staff and the employee. CNN has asked the Army and the Trump campaign for comment. The incident also prompted the Army to issue the unusually sharp rebuke of the Trump campaign.

CNN —Republican women can vote for Kamala Harris — and they don’t need to tell anyone about it. Such voters need to be approached gently since she’s asking dissident Republican voters to shelve some of their most cherished political positions. Cheney’s appearances with Harris came as the vice president seeks to further widen a massive gender gap with the ex-president among women voters. A New York Times/Siena College poll this month showed Harris leading women voters by 56% to 40% over Trump. Trump’s struggles with women votersHarris’ events with Cheney raised the question of just how many Republican voters might be in reach for her.

CNN —Two US service members were injured in Iraq in a joint US-Iraqi raid overnight that killed “multiple ISIS operatives,” according to a Defense Department spokesperson. A defense official said Wednesday that both service members had been transferred to Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany and were still in stable condition. “Overnight, CENTCOM [US Central Command] and Iraqi security forces conducted a partner raid in Iraq targeting several senior ISIS leaders,” said Ryder. Iraq’s Higher Military Commission had aimed to propose an end date for Operation Inherent Resolve, the US military operation combatting ISIS. “We continue to focus our efforts on specifically targeting those members of ISIS who are seeking to conduct external operations outside of Iraq and Syria and those ISIS members attempting to break out ISIS members in detention in an attempt to reconstitute their forces.”Earlier this month, the head of the United Kingdom’s domestic security service MI5 said that ISIS, along with al Qaeda, are presenting a “resurgent” threat.

Harris looks to ‘paint a picture’ for undecided votersSuburban moderates are far from the only group Harris’ campaign is targeting in the race’s closing days. As the Harris campaign tries to make inroads with men, podcasts like Joe Rogan’s are still under consideration, a source familiar with the matter said. “No matter your party, no matter who you voted for last time, there is a place for you in this campaign,” Harris said last week. She appealed to moderate voters and women in their 2024 primary — including many of the same voters Harris’ campaign is targeting in the race’s late stages. Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei said on Saturday the death of Hamas leader Yahya Sinwar will not halt the "Axis of Resistance" and that Hamas would live on. "His loss is undoubtedly painful for the Axis of Resistance, but this front did not cease advancing with the martyrdom of prominent figures," Khamenei said in a statement. The "Axis of Resistance", built up with years of Iranian support, includes Hamas, the Lebanese Hezbollah group, the Houthi movement in Yemen, and various Shi'ite groups in Iraq and Syria. The groups describe themselves as the resistance to Israel and U.S. influence in the Middle East. "As always, we will remain by the side of the sincere fighters and combatants, by God's grace and help," Khamenei said.

If Netanyahu is feeling that pressure, that wasn't evident from his comments on Friday. International insistence that the Israeli government ease the suffering in Gaza had already intensified in the weeks before Sinwar was killed. Domestically, that may be more of a complex dance for Netanyahu, who heads a still-fragile coalition comprised of many of Israel’s most hawkish lawmakers. Until then, we will intensify military pressure,” Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich — whom both major U.K. political parties have considered sanctioning this year — said in a post on X. Before Hamas' attack, Netanyahu was scrambling to keep onside the disparate right-wing and religious parties in his fractious ruling coalition while facing huge protests against him.

More significant to the political dynamics at play, however, is how the civilian overseas vote has eclipsed military voters abroad. “As it turns out, there are more overseas civilian voters than there are military voters,” said Michael McDonald, a University of Florida political science professor. But after launching hundreds of ballistic missiles at Israel in two separate barrages, what has Iran to show for it? The October strike by 180 ballistic missiles saw a higher percentage of rockets penetrate defenses. All of which raises a question: is the danger of ballistic missiles overhyped? DUBAI, United Arab Emirates — Bracing itself for a retaliatory strike for last week’s ballistic missile attack, Iran has been urging its Arab neighbors not to allow Israel to use their airspace as part of any potential attack, two diplomats from Gulf nations told NBC News Friday. Israel has vowed to respond to the strikes and while the nature and timing of the attack remain unclear, Iran warned countries that do help Israel in any way could potentially become part of a war, one of the diplomats said. His death came days after several Hezbollah leaders were killed by exploding pagers and walkie-talkies, an attack which Israel was widely believed to have been behind. Both militant groups are backed by Tehran and Pezeshkian has portrayed Iran as “exercising restraint” because it waited for two months after Haniyeh's death before launching the attack on Israel. NBC News has reached out to the Israel Defense Forces for comment but has not received a response.

After Iran launched approximately 200 ballistic missiles at Israel last week, U.S. military officials discussed options for joining Israel in its retaliation against Iran, according to two U.S. officials familiar with the discussions. The U.S. has long supported Israel with intelligence and that support could continue during Israel’s retaliatory strikes against Iran, the two officials said. Senior U.S. military officials have also discussed conducting very limited strikes against Iranian targets, the two officials said. Strikes inside Iran have been discussed, as have strikes on targets outside Iran, though strikes of any kind are less likely than intelligence sharing, the officials said. And U.S. officials say Israel has made it clear that it is not ruling out a response during the Yom Kippur holiday this week.

In 2022, oil flow in the Strait of Hormuz averaged 21 million barrels per day, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration (EIA). Saul Kavonic, senior research analyst at MST Financial, said supply disruptions along the Strait of Hormuz could send oil prices significantly higher. Oil prices traded more than 3% on Monday, extending gains even after notching their sharpest weekly gain since early 2023 last week. "But seeing where the oil price sits right now the market doesn't seem to hold much probability for such a development at all," he added. "A significant disruption to these flows would be enough to push oil prices to new record highs, surpassing the record high of close to $150/bbl in 2008," he added.

Experts told BI that Israel still lacks a long-term strategic vision on how to end the war. But while Israel may have military superiority in the region, it lacks a clear, long-term strategic vision to end conflict in the Middle East, according to security experts. It's clear the Israel Defense Forces have achieved a series of tactical gains in recent weeks, but they still lack a clear military strategy, security analysts told Business Insider. "Neither outcome achieves Israel's security objectives, which would represent a defeat for the IDF and could threaten the survival of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu's government," Pfaff said. The problem may be that Israel's security doctrine has long been based on short wars.
