The Smearing of Clarence Thomas
  + stars: | 2023-04-08 | by ( The Editorial Board | ) www.wsj.com   time to read: 1 min
The left’s assault on the Supreme Court is continuing, and the latest front is the news that Justice Clarence Thomas has a rich friend who has hosted the Justice on his private plane, his yacht, and his vacation resort. That’s the story. Yet this non-bombshell has triggered breathless claims that the Court must be investigated, and that Justice Thomas must resign or be impeached. ***ProPublica, a left-leaning website, kicked off the fun with a report Thursday that Justice Thomas has a longtime friendship with Harlan Crow , a wealthy Texas real-estate developer. The intrepid reporters roamed far and wide to discover that the Justice has sometimes traveled on Mr. Crow’s “Bombardier Global 5000 jet” and that each summer the Justice and his wife spend a vacation week at Mr. Crow’s place in the Adirondacks.
But finding companies that are serious about sustainability isn't easy, said James Thornton, CEO of tour company Intrepid Travel. "You see hotels saying they're sustainable, and then you're using these little travel bottles for shampoos and shower gels," he said. "The honest truth is that every travel company is ultimately contributing towards the climate crisis," he said. "So the best thing any travel company can start to do is measure the greenhouse gas emissions it creates." Other companies with B Corp status include Seventh Generation, Ben & Jerry's, Aesop — and Patagonia, which Thornton called "arguably the most famous B Corp in the world."
Rep. George Santos, of New York's 3rd Congressional District, was widely celebrated by Republicans for flipping a Democratic seat in the latest midterm elections. Under normal circumstances, the depth and breadth of his deception would shame one into resigning from public office. But these are not normal times, and Santos is shameless not only in lying but in lying about his lying. The modern GOP has been hijacked by arsonists bent on burning down everything around them, including the Office of Congressional Ethics. The right’s acceptance of Santos is a function of power politics rather than ethics: House Speaker Kevin McCarthy needs every vote he can get, and he needs George Santos to remain in power.
Other world leaders who died in 2022 include former Soviet leader Mikhail Gorbachev, who died in August. The final days of 2022 saw the loss of some exceptionally notable figures, including Pope Emeritus Benedict XVI. Here is a roll call of some influential figures who died in 2022 (cause of death cited for younger people, if available):___JANUARY___Dan Reeves, 77. A Cuban-born artist whose radiant color palette and geometric paintings were overlooked for decades before the art world took notice. A prolific character actor best known for playing villains and tough guys in “The Manchurian Candidate,” “Ocean’s Eleven” and other films.
Intrepid bankers will find Boutique Blvd jam-packed

The situation complicates things for rainmakers considering their next steps in a weaker environment for mergers and acquisitions. Making the well-trod move from Wall Street to Boutique Boulevard will be much harder in 2023. The entrepreneurial spirit often hits investment bankers when times get tough, and their mega-bank employers start cutting staff or restricting access to the balance sheet. It's easy to see how the likes of Blair Effron’s Centerview, Robey Warshaw and Ken Moelis’ eponymous firm established themselves. Absent those kinds of industry-specific or geographic relationships, idle investment bankers may find themselves just spending more time with their families.
The brave septuagenarians arrived on Sangatte beach near Calais in September having entered the water 21 miles away on England's Kent coast 18 hours earlier in pitch darkness. But their incredible achievement has not been ratified by The Channel Swimming and Piloting Federation (CSPF), because of what was described as an 'illegal changeover'. Group leader Bob Holman, 78, said he was 'totally gutted' that 'nit-picking and a pedantic attitude' by the overseeing organisation had denied them the record. Legal action is now being considered by the group whose effort raised thousands of pounds for an Alzheimer's charity. The Channel Swimming and Piloting Federation has been approached by Reuters for comment.
For decades, searching for such hard-to-reach plants and collecting samples was carried out by intrepid botanists who rappelled by rope down dangerous cliffs to hunt for what was lost. Now, we may have a little more time before extinction.”DIRE SITUATIONToday, two in five plant species globally are threatened with extinction. Kauai has 250 plant species that can be found only on the island. To protect species in the long run, botanists need to collect samples — seeds and genetic material — which they can cultivate in greenhouse nurseries. They might even use drones to bomb down collected seeds, packing them into sticky fertilizer balls that can adhere to steep cliffs.
A long time agoAn artist's illustration reconstructs Greenland's unique ecosystem as it existed 2 million years ago. Beth ZaikenScientists in Denmark have found the world’s oldest DNA sequences in sediment from the ice age. The core, taken from northern Greenland, revealed that the polar region was once abundant with plant and animal life 2 million years ago. Mastodons, reindeer, geese, lemmings and hares lived in an ecosystem that was a mix of temperate and Arctic flora and fauna. The fossil includes the head, neck and body together — a rare discovery for the marine reptiles, which didn’t preserve well in one piece.
3 Ski Vacation Ideas That Suit Both Devotees and Dabblers

“A NEW YEAR, a new slope” could be the mantra of Lisa Parilla, whose Bay Area family of four like to try out new ski runs during winter breaks. While dad and the couple’s 11-year-old son ski all day, she and their 13-year-old daughter like to squeeze in shopping, sightseeing and leisurely lunch breaks. Given high travel costs, booking flights, food and comfortable digs for a five-day spree at $10,000 demands creativity and flexibility. Its iconic Corbet’s Couloir run, however, with a terrifying 45-degree pitch, is not for the faint of heart. For this family trip, Ms. Nash suggests Hotel Terra in Teton Village, or a 1-2 bedroom with full kitchen at Teton Mountain Lodge, a ski-in, ski-out option in Mountain Village.
ECHO CHAMBER Intrepid visitors in Riverbend Cave, one of several caves you can explore at Vancouver Island’s Horne Lake Caves Provincial Park. WE WERE about 120 feet from the mouth of one of the caves in British Columbia’s Horne Lake Caves Provincial Parks when Ryan Nelson, our 29-year-old guide, suggested we find a stable perch on the water-slicked rocks beneath our feet. “In every cave,” Ryan told us, “you have the entrance zone, the twilight zone, and a zone where no light at all penetrates during a complete 24-hour cycle. Now, turn your lights off.” Desmond, my son, and I obeyed, flicking switches on our helmets. Suddenly there was nothing left in the world but the sound of a subterranean river rushing through limestone.
CNN —On one side of the pitch was a team made up some of the biggest names in world soccer. Described as a “real bunch of ragamuffins” by the author Geoffrey Douglas, the US beat a star-studded England side 1-0 at the 1950 World Cup. I mean, a plucky group of underdogs just beat what was generally universally recognized as the best team in the world,” Holroyd told CNN Sport. PA Images/ReutersAnd so when the 1950 World Cup approached, there was little national interest or coverage of the US’ participation. On the other side of the pond, hopes were sky high for a star-studded England team.
There's a new documentary about the Opportunity rover's life on Mars. For more than 15 years, NASA's Opportunity rover was a robot geologist on the Martian surface. From ABBA to George Michael, wake up with the stirring playlist NASA engineers made for the Opportunity Mars rover. While dusty storms can silence rovers, dust devils can blow away some of the dust that blankets the rover's solar panels. Months later, mission engineers hoped Opportunity would reboot once the weather cleared, as it had in the past.
“She Said” nevertheless joins a long tradition of movies about dogged reporters exposing injustice, and in this case helping spawn a sweeping movement. The film is adapted from the book by New York Times reporters Megan Twohey and Jodi Kantor, which might explain why the work of Ronan Farrow is mentioned but conspicuously shortchanged. Setting that aside, the heart of “She Said,” which begins with Twohey (Carey Mulligan) reporting on Donald Trump, centers on her collaboration with Kantor (Zoe Kazan) to lay bare the predatory behavior of Harvey Weinstein. Carey Mulligan and Zoe Kazan play New York Times reporters in the fact-based movie "She Said." (The film’s producers include Brad Pitt, who has spoken of confronting Weinstein back when he was dating Gwyneth Paltrow.)
The free feature promises to let iPhone users contact dedicated dispatchers in emergency situations via satellites when a cell phone network is unavailable. During my test with an iPhone 14 provided by Apple, I attempted to call 911 but was automatically redirected to Emergency SOS via Satellite dispatchers for the purposes of the demo. On Tuesday, Apple will launch the Emergency SOS with Satellite feature for those with an iPhone 14 in the United States and Canada. Apple said because the user may be in a distressed state, a questionnaire helps to gather critical information more quickly. For now, Emergency SOS via satellite only works in English, Spanish, and French, although the dispatchers have professional interpretation services available for many more languages.

Nov 7 (Reuters) - Mosaic Co (MOS.N) on Monday became the latest fertilizer maker to miss third-quarter profit estimates, hurt by damage from Hurricane Ian and cooling prices of crop nutrients. Prices of nutrients such as phosphates and potash have cooled from the near record highs they touched earlier this year as farmers cut back on fertilizer use to rein in costs. Reuters GraphicsRivals Nutrien Ltd (NTR.TO), CF Industries Holdings Inc (CF.N) and Intrepid Potash Inc (IPI.N) missed quarterly profit estimates last week, with top fertilizer maker Nutrien also cutting its full-year earnings forecast. Adjusted earnings in its potash segment more than tripled to $871 million, but earnings in its phosphate segment were flat. Excluding items, however, the company earned $3.22 a share, missing Wall Street consensus of $3.40 as per Refinitiv data.
Shonda Rhimes is among creators unhappy with Netflix's new ad-supported tier, sources told CNBC. Creators like the makers of "The Haunting of Hill House" say the tier upsets storytelling. Netflix doesn't intend to share income from advertising with its creators, the sources told CNBC. Intrepid Pictures' Trevor Macy and Mike Flanagan, who are behind "The Haunting of Hill House," also shared concerns, the sources said. But "Hill House," which consists of a set of extended, high suspense one-shot scenes, has fewer opportunities to find those breakpoints without compromising storytelling.
Netflix has told creators it won't be sharing any revenue from advertising with them, the people said. Rhimes signed a multiyear deal with Netflix in 2021 to exclusively make content for the streaming service. When she inked the deal, Netflix had a firm policy not to include advertising in its programming, a longtime tenet of co-founder and co-CEO Reed Hastings. Netflix executives have told creators they have thoughtfully placed midroll advertising at intervals that make sense with each episode's storyline, according to people familiar with the matter. They've also told creators they don't expect that many people to sign up for the basic advertising tier relative to subscribers who will pay for no commercials, the people said.

Elsie Robinson was born in 1883 into a down-at-heel family in a blue-collar California town. Restless and rebellious, the tall, square-jawed teenager dreamt of going to college but seemed doomed to the life of a repressed Victorian housewife, miserable in her marriage and thwarted in her hopes. Yet she would become, in the words of Julia Scheeres and Allison Gilbert, “one of the most prominent and powerful writers in America,” the highest-paid woman columnist in the mighty Hearst empire. In their lively biography “Listen, World! She urged women to dream big: “I’m tired of hearing the differences of men and women emphasized and exploited.”
‘Muppets in Moscow’ Review: ‘R’ Is for Russia

In 1993, commercial airplanes landing in Moscow were jammed with church and business types eager to establish a hold in the rowdy, risky atmosphere of newly post-Soviet Russia. Among the influx of hopeful foreigners was an intrepid American television producer named Natasha Lance. As a teenager, Ms. Lance had been so enamored of Russian literature that she’d changed her name from Susan to the more romantic and Chekhovian alternative. Fluent in Russian, having studied in the Soviet Union, Ms. Lance arrived in Moscow with an agenda that fell somewhere between the commerce and religion of her fellow passengers. More to the point, for policy makers, a Russian “Sesame Street” was a way to spread American values such as racial and ethnic tolerance, the legitimacy of nontraditional sex roles, and the vigor of an open society.
Rupert Murdoch is in the early stages of exploring whether to put his media companies News Corp. and Fox Corp. back together, according to a person familiar with the matter. Fox Corp., the leftovers from the $71.3 billion 21st Century Fox sale to Disney in 2019, owns right wing networks Fox News and Fox Business, which is a CNBC competitor. Murdoch, 91, split Fox and News Corp. in 2013. He is the chairman of Fox and the executive chairman of News Corp. His son Lachlan Murdoch is CEO of Fox and co-executive chairman of News Corp. The Murdoch family has a 42% voting stake in Fox and a 39% voting stake in News Corp., according to the Journal.
Now 76 and living in Oregon, Mountain Girl has gave us an exclusive look at her memoir. Altamont, the free concert that Mountain Girl and Jerry Garcia helped organized, was meant to revive the spirit of the Sixties. Today, 60 years since she took that ride with Neal Cassady, Mountain Girl is still forging her own path. Before I leave Kesey's farm, Mountain Girl and I walk outside to the old brown barn where Furthur now rests. But for Mountain Girl, it lives forever, an emblem of everything her generation believed in, and all that they achieved.
The CIA on Saturday unveiled the model of Ayman al-Zawahiri’s safe house in Kabul used to plan the U.S. drone strike that killed the Al-Qaeda leader last month. The scale model of Zawahiri’s house was shown to reporters as part of a tour of a newly refurbished museum at the agency's headquarters. “This was the model that was used to brief President Biden on the Zawahiri mission,” said Janelle Neises, deputy director of the CIA museum. Zawahiri was struck by a Hellfire missile as he stood on the balcony of the house, U.S. officials say. “He carved a trail of murder and violence against American citizens, American service members, American diplomats and American interests,” Biden said.
North Jutland, DenmarkSouthern Europe swells with crowds during summer, and it can also get hot to the point of extremely uncomfortable in July and August. Temperatures in Seville and other spots in southern Spain recently exceeded the 110˚ Fahrenheit mark (43.3 Celsius). MontenegroLeave Croatia’s jam-packed Dubrovnik to the hordes of “Game of Thrones” hangers-on and make for less-trampled spots in neighboring Montenegro instead. It’s just 40 minutes from the popular beaches of Taormina, which are flooded with “White Lotus” fans this summer. There are beaches all around the peninsula, but if you only hit two, Mylopotamos and Fakistra on the Aegean side are the can’t-miss spots.
