When Mark Cuban launched his first tech startup, he couldn't have known he'd end up a billionaire today. He was confident, though, that his sales pitch for the company — a software startup called MicroSolutions — would work. In the proposal, Cuban wrote that his tool would be a great resource for attorneys looking to streamline their workflow — by having information "immediately published electronically to the organization," as opposed to using notebooks. Basically, it was our version of Slack long before Slack," Cuban wrote in a follow-up post. A year after sending his pitch to the law firm, Cuban sold MicroSolutions to now-defunct internet services company CompuServe for $6 million.

Shortly after Irwin re-joined the company, Musk published a series of incendiary anti-LGBTQ posts to X. Attractive returns and the breadth of opportunities are among the many reasons the U.S. has long reigned supreme for investors. In terms of countries, Japan looks to offer the best combination of earnings growth, cheap valuations and policy support," Tom Stevenson, investment director at Fidelity International, told CNBC Pro. "Japanese shares are trading on around 15 times this year's expected earnings and 14 times earnings two years out," he said. "There has been some increase in this multiple during the recent rally in Japanese shares, but they remain relatively cheap compared to the U.S. which trades on around 20 times earnings." Experts have partly attributed the slump to misinformation, along with a lacklustre "Yes" campaign and conservative opposition. Alex Wong/Pool via REUTERS/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Sept 25 (Reuters) - U.S. Federal Communications Commission chair Jessica Rosenworcel plans to begin an effort to reinstate landmark net neutrality rules rescinded under then-President Donald Trump, sources briefed on the matter said Monday. The FCC is set to take an initial vote on the net neutrality proposal in October, the sources added. In July 2021, Biden signed an executive order encouraging the FCC to reinstate net neutrality rules adopted under Democratic then-President Barack Obama in 2015. Circuit Court of Appeals ruled 3-0 that the 2017 decision by the FCC to reverse federal net neutrality protections could not bar state action, rejecting a challenge from telecom and broad industry groups to block California's net neutrality law. Days after Biden took office, the U.S. Justice Department withdrew its Trump-era legal challenge to California's state net neutrality law.

Strike signs await striking SAG-AFTRA actors and Writers Guild of America (WGA) outside Disney Studios in Burbank, California, U.S., July 25, 2023. The WGA, which represents 11,500 film and television writers, described the deal as "exceptional" with "meaningful gains and protections for writers." While writing may resume, the SAG-AFTRA actors' union remains on strike. Efforts to restart daytime talk shows without writers, such as "The Drew Barrymore Show," collapsed this month, in the face of criticism from striking writers and actors. Even as studio executives celebrated the end of the longest-running writers' strike since 1988, it is only half the labor battle.

[1/4] A satellite image shows smoke billowing from a Russian Black Sea Navy HQ after a missile strike, as Russia's invasion of Ukraine continues, in Sevastopol, Crimea, September 22, 2023. Ukraine's military confirmed it had attacked the Russian Black Sea fleet's headquarters, but gave few details. "On September 22 close to 12:00 (0900 GMT) Ukraine's defence forces successfully struck the headquarters of the Russian Black Sea fleet command in the temporarily occupied Sevastopol," it said on the Telegram messaging app. Ukraine has intensified attacks in the Black Sea and Crimea, which was seized and annexed by Russia in 2014, as Ukrainian forces press on with a nearly four-month-old counteroffensive to regain Russian-occupied territory. Oleksiy Danilov, the secretary of Ukraine's Security Council said there were two options for the future of the Russia's Black Sea fleet - voluntary or forced "self-neutralisation".

At the same time, legacy media companies face off against another well-known demon: cord-cutting. Technology companies such as Apple and Amazon can lean on their respective hardware and e-commerce businesses, said Paul Fanelli, a research analyst at Gabelli Funds. Even so, Wall Street sees only a handful of pure-play winners in the TV and streaming space winning consumer attention over the long run. Already, the technology companies have shown some promise. Consumers are increasingly forgoing pay TV packages from cable companies and opting for bundles from companies like Alphabet, he said.

After pummelling other Mediterranean countries, the powerful Storm Daniel swept into Libya at the weekend, unleashing record amounts of rain as it made landfall. The rain dumped by the storm filled a normally dry riverbed, or wadi, in the hills south of Derna. The pressure was too much for two dams built to protect the city from floods. He cited five floods since 1942, and called for immediate steps to ensure regular maintenance of the dams.

Excerpts of a new biography of Musk published by The Washington Post last week revealed that the Ukrainians in September 2022 had asked for the Starlink support to attack Russian naval vessels based at the Crimean port of Sevastopol. However, in the months since, the U.S. military has funded and officially contracted with Starlink for continued support. Until Musk’s refusal in Ukraine, there had not been a focus on whether there needed to be language saying a firm providing military support in war had to agree that that support could be used in combat. “We acquire technology, we acquire services, required platforms to serve the Air Force mission, or in this case, the Department of the Air Force,” said Andrew Hunter, assistant secretary of the Air Force for acquisition, technology and logistics. “So that is an expectation, that it is going to be used for Air Force purposes, which will include, when necessary, to be used to support combat operations.”

Elon Musk foiled an attack on Russia’s Black Sea fleet last year by refusing to let Ukraine use his satellite network to guide its drones, Mr. Musk has acknowledged, provoking a furious response from a top official in Kyiv and renewing questions about the global power wielded by a multibillionaire businessman. But Mr. Musk would not allow the network to be used for an attack last September with maritime drones on the Russian naval base at Sevastopol in Crimea, the Ukrainian territory that Russia illegally seized in 2014 and then annexed. At the time of the attempted attack, Mr. Musk spoke with the Russian ambassador to the United States, Anatoly I. Antonov, who had told him an attack on Crimea “could lead to a nuclear response,” according to a biography of Mr. Musk by the historian and journalist Walter Isaacson. The account was included in an excerpt from the book published on Thursday by The Washington Post. Mr. Musk confirmed elements of the story, writing on his social network X, formerly Twitter, “If I had agreed to their request, then SpaceX would be explicitly complicit in a major act of war and conflict escalation.”

A new code drafted by the industry giants at the government's request will require search engines to ensure that such content is not returned in search results, e-Safety Commissioner Julie Inman Grant said in a statement. It will also require that AI functions built into search engines cannot produce synthetic versions of the same material, she said. "The use of generative AI has grown so quickly that I think it's caught the whole world off guard to a certain degree," Inman Grant said. We asked the industry to have another go," Inman Grant added.
