South Korea is seeking a meeting with International Olympic Committee (IOC) president Thomas Bach after its 143 athletes were wrongly introduced as North Korean during the opening ceremony for the Paris Olympics. AdvertisementThe formal name of South Korea is the Republic of Korea. North Korea, which has 16 athletes as part of its first delegation since 2016, was properly introduced later in the program in French and English. South Korea and North Korea have been established as separate entities since 1948 and have been in conflict after the Korean War of the early 1950s. In 2012, organizers in London blamed “human error” after a flag of South Korea was displayed alongside North Korea’s women’s team ahead of a game in the soccer tournament.

Like every city that hosts the Olympics, Paris designed its opening ceremony to make a splash, with ethereal dance performances, athletes floating down the Seine and a blowout performance by Celine Dion. A big display is table stakes, and hundreds of thousands of people jammed the city’s bridges and riverbanks for hours to cheer the flotilla. The tab for the Games in Paris, the first city to fully test cost-cutting reforms that the International Olympic Committee introduced in 2019, is at least $8.87 billion. Figuring out how to keep host city expenses on budget is vital for the Olympics, which have struggled to find host cities in places where citizens have a say in the decision. voted on Wednesday to give the 2030 Winter Games to the French Alps and the 2034 Winter Games to Salt Lake City, both cities were the only candidates.

The economics of the Olympics

“This will be the first Olympics, since Sydney, where the total costs are coming in under $10 billion,” said Victor Matheson, a College of the Holy Cross professor of economics who has researched the financial costs of the Olympics. Workmen adjust banners on the 3x3 basketball venue located at La Concorde, in Paris, ahead of the 2024 Olympic Games. Additionally, the Paris Olympic Village will be converted into offices and housing in a historically impoverished neighborhood. Still, economists say, it may take more drastic moves in the future for the Olympics to be truly sustainable and economically sound. “I love the Olympics, and I love sporting events, but I just really do not think that the way the Olympics works now is a viable business model,” Phalin said.

Paris CNN —France’s high-speed train lines were targeted by multiple “malicious” acts including arson on Friday, in what has been described as “coordinated sabotage” to disrupt travel ahead of the Opening Ceremony of the Paris Olympics. SNCF said one of the acts was “foiled.”Travel on these lines is “very disrupted,” with the railway network needing to divert and cancel a large number of trains, SNCF said. Passengers gather around the departure boards at the Gare Montparnasse train station in Paris. Eurostar, the high-speed train service that connects the United Kingdom with France, has been forced to cancel and divert trains due to the “coordinated acts of malice,” on French lines. Meanwhile, the Paris 2024 Olympic Committee canceled its pre-opening ceremony press conference amid the incident, and CNN has also asked Paris 2024 for comment.

In 2004, Friba Rezayee, a judo athlete, became the first woman to represent Afghanistan in the Olympic Games. Today, under Taliban rule, Afghan women and girls face severe restrictions that effectively make it impossible for them to train for the Olympics at home. In this audio essay, Rezayee argues that the International Olympic Committee should demonstrate that it values human rights and opposes discrimination by barring a team representing Afghanistan in the Paris Games. This week, the world will tune in to watch what is being billed as the most sustainable Olympic Games in history, a goal the organizers of the Paris Games aim to reach in part by refurbishing buildings instead of constructing new ones. More than 90 percent of the venues that will be used for the Paris Games are temporary or already existed, though many of the buildings are old — including one used in the 1924 Olympics — and needed to be upgraded. For decades, the International Olympic Committee has been stung by images of Olympic venues in disrepair years after the Games end. The soaring cost of putting on the games and the white elephants left in their wake had scared away potential bidders. hopes that its ambitions for more sustainable Olympic facilities will lure other potential bidders.

The Olympics will challenge wireless providers as 15 million people seek internet access at once. To meet that expectation, telecommunications companies must bolster Paris' 5G network, the technology system that powers users' mobile-internet access. Harnessing private 5G infrastructureOrange is installing cellphone antennas on boats and extension units in sporting venues to bolster its 5G network. It uses 5G's network-splicing capabilities to reserve a part of the public 5G network for private use. To support the 2024 Olympics' connectivity needs, network providers must prepare to rely on 5G's strength.

When the Taliban regained control of Afghanistan in 2021, one of its first actions was to bar women and girls from participating in sports publicly. Female athletes in Afghanistan today face similar threats from the Taliban, including physical abuse and raids on their homes. The most recent example is the International Olympic Committee’s decision to allow a team representing Afghanistan in the Paris Games. It should let the athletes — most of whom live in exile — compete on the Refugee Olympic Team, which would send a message of hope to refugees around the world. But none of the three women representing Afghanistan — in athletics and cycling — live and train in the country, nor could they visit without risking their lives.
