Anthony Wallace | Afp | Getty ImagesThe shipping industry is contending with a worldwide shortage of seafarers, and it's fueling a troubling mix of fake resumes, accidents at sea, and elevated freight rates. "We have been seeing a consistent shortage of seafarers," Rhett Harris, senior manning analyst at Drewry, told CNBC. The Philippines, China, Russia, Ukraine and Indonesia are the largest suppliers of the world's seafarers, according to the most recent seafarer workforce breakdown report by the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS) and BIMCO in 2021. Before Russia's invasion of Ukraine in February 2022, Russian and Ukrainian seafarers made up almost 15% of the global shipping workforce, ICS data showed. "Policymakers need to create national strategies to address the seafarer shortage," the shipping organization said.

CNN —President-elect Donald Trump’s choice of Robert F. Kennedy Jr. to lead the US Department of Health and Human Services sent a shudder through the global health community. The US is the world’s largest funder of global health programs, according to the nonprofit health policy and research group KFF. Global health is really strategic investment,” del Rio added, saying he hoped Kennedy would find a way to maintain those investments. Several current federal employees told CNN they’re afraid their lives will be forever changed – including physically threatened – as Musk makes behind-the-scenes bureaucrats into personal targets. “These tactics are aimed at sowing terror and fear at federal employees,” said Everett Kelley, president of the American Federation of Government Employees, which represents more than 800,000 of the 2.3 million civilian federal employees. CNN reached out to all four federal employees who either declined comment or were unable to be reached. Cummings said she already knows of federal employees who “have dedicated their lives to civil service,” already quitting their jobs in anticipation of what’s to come. Ramaswamy did not directly respond to questions about singling out individual federal employees but told CNN: “Most federal employees, like most human beings, are fundamentally good people and deserve to be treated with respect, but the real problem is the bureaucracy.”“Our opponent is not any particular individual.

President Joe Biden announced Tuesday that Israel and Hezbollah had agreed to a United States-brokered ceasefire in Lebanon. Biden said the U.S., and partners including France, "will make sure this deal is implemented fully." Their world is absolutely shattered," Biden said, adding that Hamas' only way out of the war with Israel is to release the hostages. Shortly after the president's announcement, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu said in a statement that his Cabinet had approved the U.S.-brokered deal, 10 ministers to one. Abortion providers, meanwhile, got an influx of funding that enabled them to set up new clinics and extend hours in states where abortion is still legal. Abortion pills are a target for anti-abortion activists, who hope the incoming administration might revoke provisions that allow the medications to be prescribed via telehealth and mailed nationwide. In 1999, Gomperts founded an organization that transported women from places with restrictions to a ship in international waters to obtain abortions. In 2016, the agency enabled mifepristone — one of the two pills used in medication abortions — to be used up to 10 weeks’ gestation instead of seven. By last year, medication abortions accounted for 63% of abortions nationwide, up from 53% in 2020, according to the Guttmacher Institute.

MANILA, the Philippines — Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. vowed Monday to fight back against what he called reckless and troubling threats against him, speaking out after his estranged vice president said he would be assassinated if she herself were killed. “If planning the assassination of the president is that easy, how much more for ordinary citizens?” he said. Sara Duterte told reporters she had yet to hear the president’s statement but she recalled the 1983 assassination of former Senator Benigno Aquino, for which she blamed the Marcos family, without giving proof. “The whole nation fought back when their family killed Benigno Aquino Jr.,” Duterte told reporters. A ransomware attack against a supply chain manager has snarled payroll and scheduling services for prominent international companies, including Starbucks and one of Britain’s largest grocery store chains. Blue Yonder is an Arizona-based company that provides software for thousands of companies to manage their supply chains from planning to fulfillment and delivery. Last week, the company “experienced disruptions to its managed services hosted environment, which was determined to be the result of a ransomware incident,” Blue Yonder said in a statement. The latest:Trump wants to impose 25 percent tariffs on Canada and Mexico “on ALL products coming into the United States,” he said on Truth Social. He also wants an “additional” 10 percent tariff on imports from China, which Trump blames for the fentanyl crisis, a charge that Beijing has repeatedly disputed. Europe, Japan and South Korea weren’t even mentioned in Trump’s announcement, but stocks have fallen there, too. That suggests rising fears that a new trade war could scramble global supply chains and dent profits. Automakers are some of the hardest hit stocks, with Volkswagen, Stellantis and Nissan, which run manufacturing operations in Mexico, all down.

Trump selects Jamieson Greer as U.S. trade representative
  + stars: | 2024-11-26 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
U.S. President-elect Donald Trump tapped attorney Jamieson Greer on Tuesday to serve as the U.S. Trade Representative, a pick that will play an important role in the Republican's agenda to remake the international trading environment through tariffs. Greer, an attorney who has practiced international trade law, served as chief of staff to the USTR Robert Lighthizer during the first Trump administration. Trump said Greer's efforts under Lighthizer helped reverse decades of "disastrous trade policies." His focus, if confirmed by the U.S. Senate, will be to rein in the trade deficit and open up "export markets everywhere," among other things, Trump said. Lutnick will have "direct responsibility" for the Office of the U.S. Trade Representative, he said last week.

With former high-flying gambling stocks struggling so far in the fourth quarter, it's tempting to write off the entire group. MGM is only up about 10% since the August market low, and CZR is slightly above the S & P 500 in terms of performance. Over the same period, we can see that DraftKings Inc (DKNG) is up around 35%, doubling the return of the S & P 500. FLUT has now made a new 12-month relative high, as the strong performance in Q4 has outpaced other gambling stocks as well as the major equity benchmarks. As long as these two gambling stocks continue to demonstrate strong relative strength characteristics, we feel they represent excellent opportunities into year-end 2024.

While leaders of the two nations continue to butt heads, US consumers have paid the price, shelling out more money on goods imported from China. Now Trump is focusing his attention on America’s largest and third-largest trading partners: Mexico and Canada. The 25% tariff Trump floated would have “huge impacts” on gas prices, amounting to an increase between 25 cents to 75 cents per gallon, he said. Said differently, your guac and avocado toast could skyrocket if 25% tariffs are levied on Mexico. Bottom line: It’s going to hurtThe new round of tariffs Trump is prepared to impose comes as the US has grown increasingly reliant on imports from Mexico and Canada.

CNN —With a Hezbollah-Israel ceasefire on the horizon, an 18-year-old United Nations resolution has resurfaced as a blueprint for ending the war. The 60-day cessation of hostilities aims to implement UN Security Council Resolution 1701, with the hope that it could form the basis of a lasting truce. Resolution 1701 was adopted to end a 34-day war between Israel and Lebanon in 2006, and had kept relative calm in the area for nearly two decades. Here’s what we know about the resolution and why it is critical to a ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon. In 2000, the UN established the so-called Blue Line, a “line of withdrawal” for Israeli forces from Lebanon.

President-elect Donald J. Trump’s threats to impose damaging tariffs on Canada, Mexico and China may ultimately be an opening wager to try to use the power of the American market to persuade other countries to stem a flow of drugs and migrants across U.S. borders. But even if the threat to impose vast tariffs on some of the world’s largest economies is a negotiating tactic, it is also a gambit that has immediate real-world consequences. Before Mr. Trump even sets foot in the Oval Office, his threat to put tariffs on America’s three largest trading partners on his first day in office was reverberating around the world, shocking international businesses, rocking diplomatic relationships and calling into question two big trade deals that Mr. Trump negotiated during his first term. Mr. Trump’s pronouncement late Monday that he would impose a 25 percent tariff on all goods from Canada and Mexico and a 10 percent tariff on products from China was immediately denounced by business groups, who said such a move would cause grave economic harm. Foreign officials rushed to reassure the incoming Trump administration that they had been working to stop drugs and migrants from coming into the United States — while warning that they were also ready to turn around and impose their own tariffs on American exports.

On page 273 of her memoir, Angela Merkel admits she made a mistake. In a 2003 guest essay for The Washington Post, she attacked him for criticizing the impending American invasion of Iraq: “Schröder doesn’t speak for all Germans,” the headline ran. Strangely, the mistake Ms. Merkel acknowledges is not her support for the Iraq war, even though she now thinks the invasion was wrong. After three years away, Ms. Merkel is stepping back onto the world stage. But she isn’t ready to say “sorry.”
