Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger holds a sample of a wafer during his keynote speech at the Computex conference in Taipei on June 4, 2024. Intel shares jumped 8% in extended trading Monday after the company said it plans to turn its foundry business into an independent unit with its own board and the potential to raise outside capital. Gelsinger said the restructuring would allow the foundry business to "evaluate independent sources of funding," and comes days after Intel's board met to assess the direction and future of the company. The foundry business, which Intel plans to use to manufacture chips for other customers, has been a big drag on its bottom line, with the company spending roughly $25 billion on it in each of the last two years. With a standalone "operating board" and a cleaner corporate structure, the mechanics of a separation become far easier than trying to turn a fully integrated unit into a separate company.

The Biden Administration on Monday awarded Intel up to an additional $3 billion under the CHIPS and Science Act for the "Secure Enclave" program which is designed to expand the supply of microelectronics for the U.S. Department of Defense. Intel is building foundry plants in four states as part of its project to increase domestic semiconductor manufacturing for other suppliers. In March, the Biden administration awarded Intel with up to $8.5 billion under the CHIPS and Science Act. Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger, in a recent meeting with Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo, voiced frustration over the heavy reliance that U.S. companies have on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing, the world's largest contract chipmaker. The company announced in August it would cut 15% of its workforce as part of a $10 billion cost-reduction plan.

The company is turning to Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo for help. In a recent meeting with Raimondo, Intel CEO Pat Gelsinger voiced frustration over the heavy reliance that U.S. companies have on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing , the world's largest contract chipmaker. Intel is currently building out plants in four U.S. states as it seeks to become more of a foundry business, manufacturing chips for other suppliers. It's an increasingly important initiative for Intel, which is getting trounced in the market for microprocessors. Concerns have been rising for years that China could invade Taiwan, creating a massive risk for the U.S. chip industry.

When Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang spoke to Goldman Sachs CEO David Solomon on Wednesday, the banker raised this relationship — and how precarious it is due to rising tension in the Taiwan Strait. This story is available exclusively to Business Insider subscribers. Last year, Huang said he felt "perfectly safe" relying on manufacturing in Taiwan. Though Samsung has some of the same capabilities required to produce the most advanced chips, TSMC is the clear leader. Huang went on to praise TSMC for scaling up to meet the demand that created Nvidia's "hockey stick" earnings in recent years.

She went to work as a process engineer at an Intel chip fab in Arizona. Over half of companies reported less than 10% representation of women in technical director roles and less than 5% in technical executive leadership roles. While the chip industry makes efforts to expand the recruiting pool in general so that hiring can be more inclusive, the changes can feel incremental. Related storiesIntel set goals to increase its female senior leadership representation to 25% and technical roles to 40% by 2030. Closing the gender gap in the chip industry will require more efforts from companies and top leadership to make these career paths more inclusive and stable.

Intel is working with advisors including Morgan Stanley to help defend itself against activist investors, according to people familiar with the matter, as CEO Pat Gelsinger attempts to turn around the struggling chipmaker. While Intel has faced activist pressure in the past, no new campaign has been formally launched and it isn't clear if an activist investor has been in contact with the company's board. Morgan Stanley has previously worked with Intel, including in the company's 2022 spinoff of Mobileye . The sources with knowledge of Morgan Stanley's latest involvement asked not to be named due to confidentiality. Representatives for Intel and Morgan Stanley declined to comment.

Intel has sold its 1.18 million share stake in British chip firm Arm Holdings, according to a regulatory filing, as the California chip designer shores up its balance sheet amid intense competition. The sale, disclosed on Tuesday, likely raised Intel nearly $147 million, based on Arm's average stock price between April and June. Intel had cash and cash equivalents of $11.3 billion, and liabilities of about $32 billion at the end of June, according to its latest financials. Intel and Arm declined to comment on the sale when contacted by CNBC on Wednesday. Japan's SoftBank Group has a majority stake in Arm, and has been a beneficiary of the jump in the company's shares.

Anything above 4% indicates the market is overbought, anything below a minus 5% means the market is oversold.) I am just prematurely predicting other investors fleeing the stock because they think Warren knows more than them. Many investors thought that Amazon was the best set up of the Mag Seven going into earnings. We are right smack in a most perilous moment because the Fed doesn't want to move too fast but the stock market does and the Fed does not care about that. Bloom Energy is an up-and-coming artificial intelligence play, according to Morgan Stanley. Analyst Andrew Percoco reiterated his overweight rating on San Jose-based Bloom Energy after it announced a strategic partnership on Tuesday with Nvidia-backed GPU cloud provider CoreWeave. Under the agreement, Bloom Energy will deploy its solid oxide fuel cells to generate power for CoreWeave's data center in Illinois. The analyst's $22 price target implies shares of Bloom Energy can jump nearly 44% from its latest closing price. Bloom Energy and e-commerce giant Amazon last week entered into an agreement with Silicon Valley Power to deploy 20 megawatts of fuel cells for an Amazon data center, Percoco noted.

We think so," Melius analyst Ben Reitzes said in a research report on Monday. We think infrastructure software may be harder to disrupt," the Melius analyst said. Apple, AMD and Intel should benefit from looming product cycles and an eventual easing of cloud capital expenditures spending, according to Reitzes. For Apple, the analyst believes consumers will favor its iPhone 16 out in September given its "Apple Intelligence" AI capabilities. His price targets on Intel and AMD suggest the stocks can advance some 16% and 22%, respectively, over the next year.
