DETROIT — The case against a man accused of killing of a Detroit synagogue leader collapsed Friday as a judge dismissed a remaining murder charge, three weeks after a jury cleared him of a similar but separate charge. Prosecutors acknowledged that the pending murder charge probably had to be dismissed, but it still was a blow in the highly publicized case. But it couldn’t reach a unanimous verdict on a separate charge of felony murder, which in Michigan is murder committed during another crime. The judge ruled out a second trial Friday, based on a 2009 U.S. Supreme Court decision involving partial jury verdicts. CNN —The man accused of stabbing author Salman Rushdie was charged with three federal terrorism-related counts, according to a grand jury indictment unsealed Wednesday. Hadi Matar is charged with committing an act of terrorism transcending national boundaries, attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization and providing material support to terrorists. Matar has already pleaded not guilty to state charges of second-degree attempted murder and second-degree assault in connection with the stabbing. Matar recently rejected a state plea deal that would have tied in a federal terrorism-related charge and reduced his state prison sentence. Matar will appear in federal court at 2 p.m. Wednesday in Buffalo, New York, according to court records.

Senator Robert Menendez of New Jersey has privately told allies that he is considering resigning from Congress after his conviction in a sweeping bribery scheme rather than face a potential expulsion vote, according to three people familiar with his remarks. Two of the people, who were not authorized to discuss the conversations, cautioned that Mr. Menendez has not made a final decision and could still fight to serve out his term. Publicly, he has maintained his innocence and vowed to appeal Tuesday’s guilty verdict on 16 felony counts. “I have never been anything but a patriot,” Mr. Menendez, a Democrat, told reporters in New York after conviction. But the comments he made in phone calls with close associates in the hours after he left the Manhattan courthouse suggest for the first time that Mr. Menendez has absorbed how rapidly his political path forward is crumbling — and may be looking to avoid further public humiliation.

Senator Robert Menendez of New Jersey maintained his innocence on Tuesday and vowed to appeal his conviction on sweeping charges of bribery, extortion and obstruction of justice. Mr. Menendez offered few immediate answers. Judge Sidney H. Stein set a hearing to sentence Mr. Menendez and his co-defendants for Oct. 29, just a week before Election Day. The senator, who is free on a personal recognizance bond, could face up to 20 years in prison. It took only a matter of minutes, though, for Mr. Menendez, a Democrat, to face renewed calls to resign his Senate seat, including from Senator Chuck Schumer of New York, the majority leader, and Gov.

Menendez maintains his innocence and plans to appeal the verdict, he told reporters outside the Manhattan courtroom on Tuesday. The discovery that Menendez owned a hoard of gold bars stunned many people. And now even Costco sells gold bars. The two kilograms and 11 ounces worth of gold bars Menendez and his wife possessed would have been worth over $185,000 as of Tuesday, according to Goldprice.org data. Other people who prefer to keep gold under their own roof store it in a gun safe or floor safe, he added.

Sunny Eaton never imagined herself working at the district attorney’s office. She spent a decade building her own private practice, but in 2020, she took an unusual job as the director of the conviction-review unit in the Nashville D.A.’s office. Her assignment was to investigate past cases her office had prosecuted and identify convictions for which there was new evidence of innocence. The sheer number of cases reflected how much the world had changed over the previous 30 years. DNA analysis and scientific research had exposed the deficiencies of evidence that had, for decades, helped prosecutors win convictions.

After seven weeks of trial, federal prosecutors rested their case on Friday against Senator Robert Menendez, a New Jersey Democrat accused of conspiring to take hundreds of thousands of dollars in gold, cash and other bribes in return for the senator’s willingness to dispense political favors at home and abroad. Defense lawyers are expected to begin calling witnesses next week in Federal District Court in Manhattan. Throughout the trial, lawyers for Mr. Menendez, who has vigorously maintained his innocence, have aggressively cross-examined a parade of government witnesses, seeking to undermine their credibility. “The government hasn’t proven its case,” Mr. Menendez said as he left the courthouse on Friday. The conclusion of the government’s case comes nine months after Mr. Menendez, his wife and several New Jersey businessmen were first charged with participating in a vast bribery conspiracy that prosecutors say began in 2018.

SO WHAT: Poems, by Frederick SeidelFrederick Seidel’s best poems balance on a razor’s edge between diagnosing what’s wrong and being in the wrong. But Seidel is among our best contemporary poets, and has continued writing, well into his ninth decade, handsomely and in parody of handsome writing. We need poets’ blessings, but Seidel’s work has never been the place to find them. Instead, he offers something else we also need: poems that won’t let us look away. To submit to a Seidel poem is to encounter constantly shifting attentions and visionary leaps, even if they don’t always stick the landing.

In his first reaction to the verdict, Hunter Biden didn’t attack the judge or prosecutors, simply saying he was grateful for the love and support of his family and blessed to be clean again. The Hunter Biden verdict also contradicted the central rationale of Trump’s multiple legal defenses in his four criminal cases, several civil matters and his entire presidential campaign. “So much for the weaponization of the Justice Department to go after just the enemies of the other side,” Michael Zeldin, a former senior Justice Department official and federal prosecutor, said on CNN Max on Tuesday. Stephen Miller, Trump’s former White House domestic policy adviser, argued that the Justice Department had actually shown favoritism toward Hunter Biden by not charging him with 50 felonies over foreign influence peddling. “Hunter Biden just became the Deep State’s sacrificial lamb to show that Justice is ‘balanced’ while the other Biden crimes remain ignored,” she wrote on X.

The Hunter Biden and Trump cases are vastly different, as is the way the former and current first families have responded to the trials. This is especially significant since Hunter Biden could face up to 25 years in prison if convicted, although a sentence for a first-time offender is unlikely to be that severe. The Hunter Biden trial is the latest cruel twist in the story of a family that has endured more tragedies than most could bear. The infringements on the Biden family’s dignity and privacy cut deep during the trial, which saw discomforting testimony about Hunter Biden’s former cocaine addiction. Media organizations, meanwhile, played an excerpt from Hunter Biden’s audio book that chronicles his spiral into addiction that was used in the prosecution case.

To the Editor:Re “Should Trump Be Sentenced to Prison? Two Opposing Views” (Opinion guest essay, June 3):The retired judge Nancy Gertner’s argument against imprisoning Donald Trump omits the simple reality that without prison time, Donald Trump faces no meaningful punishment. Mr. Trump plainly does not see the fact of having been convicted, standing by itself, as a shameful judgment on himself. And Mr. Trump is not a credible candidate for probation. No one can argue with a straight face that Mr. Trump sees any need to change his life, nor that criminal justice system supervision could bring him around.

Knox, Sollecito and Ivory Coast native Rudy Guede, whose DNA was present in the murder room, were all convicted of the murder in 2009. Guglielmo Mangiapane/Reuters/FileKnox and Sollecito’s murder convictions were overturned by a Perugia appellate court in 2011 after an independent review of key forensic evidence, only to have that acquittal overturned by Italy’s supreme court in 2013. The 36-year-old Seattle native, now a mother of two, along with Sollecito, were definitively cleared in 2015 of Kercher’s murder after Italy’s supreme court voided the 2013 re-conviction. After being cleared of murder, Knox remained convicted of slander against Lumumba, a ruling upheld by Italy’s supreme court in 2015. The decision will then have to go to Italy’s supreme court once more.

Four days after presumptive GOP nominee Donald Trump was convicted on 34 counts in his hush money trial in New York, President Joe Biden’s son Hunter will be called to answer for federal gun charges in Wilmington, Delaware. But a CBS/YouGov poll released Sunday showed that Americans believe 57% to 43% that the Manhattan jury reached the right verdict. His inflammatory remarks did not reflect the fact that his refusal to accept his 2020 election loss and his demagoguery are far more reflective of developing-world banana republics than a fair jury trial. Hunter Biden is entitled to the same presumption of innocence and a trial by a jury of his peers that Trump was. “I’d rather be on President Biden’s side of that contrast than on the extreme MAGA Republican side,” he said.
