CNN —German tennis star Alexander Zverev and his former partner have agreed to settle his assault case, with no admission of guilt by Zverev, the Berlin Tiergarten District Court announced in a statement on Friday. Zverev was accused of “physically abusing and damaging the health of a woman during an argument in Berlin in May 2020,” according to a court statement from October 31, 2023. The alleged victim was said to have suffered shortness of breath and considerable pain, according to the court statement. “The defendant and the co-plaintiff had agreed to the proceedings being discontinued,” the court said in its statement Friday. Zverev is scheduled to play Norwegian Casper Ruud in the French Open semifinal on Friday with both players in search of a first grand slam title.

Two Opposing Views” (Opinion guest essay, June 3):The retired judge Nancy Gertner’s argument against imprisoning Donald Trump omits the simple reality that without prison time, Donald Trump faces no meaningful punishment. Mr. Trump plainly does not see the fact of having been convicted, standing by itself, as a shameful judgment on himself. And Mr. Trump is not a credible candidate for probation. No one can argue with a straight face that Mr. Trump sees any need to change his life, nor that criminal justice system supervision could bring him around.

Knox, Sollecito and Ivory Coast native Rudy Guede, whose DNA was present in the murder room, were all convicted of the murder in 2009. Guglielmo Mangiapane/Reuters/FileKnox and Sollecito’s murder convictions were overturned by a Perugia appellate court in 2011 after an independent review of key forensic evidence, only to have that acquittal overturned by Italy’s supreme court in 2013. The 36-year-old Seattle native, now a mother of two, along with Sollecito, were definitively cleared in 2015 of Kercher’s murder after Italy’s supreme court voided the 2013 re-conviction. After being cleared of murder, Knox remained convicted of slander against Lumumba, a ruling upheld by Italy’s supreme court in 2015. The decision will then have to go to Italy’s supreme court once more.

But a CBS/YouGov poll released Sunday showed that Americans believe 57% to 43% that the Manhattan jury reached the right verdict. His inflammatory remarks did not reflect the fact that his refusal to accept his 2020 election loss and his demagoguery are far more reflective of developing-world banana republics than a fair jury trial. Hunter Biden is entitled to the same presumption of innocence and a trial by a jury of his peers that Trump was. “I’d rather be on President Biden’s side of that contrast than on the extreme MAGA Republican side,” he said.
