New York CNN —President-elect Donald Trump’s favorite barometer of his success — the stock market — had been humming since his reelection. The market’s strong reaction shows that the Fed, ultimately, could weigh more heavily on markets than Trump’s policymaking going forward. And just like that, the post-election stock market rally has been almost entirely erased. “Powell just reminded us that nothing in life comes easy,” Callie Cox, chief market strategist at Ritholtz Wealth Management, told CNN, referring to recent gains the stock market has seen. Of course, stock investors knew all this.

FedEx to spin off its freight trucking business
  + stars: | 2024-12-19 | by ( ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +4 min
FedEx announced the much-anticipated spinoff of its freight trucking division on Thursday, as it restructures operations to focus on its core delivery business. They say FedEx Freight assets were not fully appreciated within FedEx and that spinning off the trucking business as a publicly held entity will provide an opportunity to expand and improve its operations. Executives said FedEx Freight lost some cost-conscious customers that it had picked up after the bankruptcy of rival Yellow Corp and that the business appeared to have bottomed during the most recent quarter. FedEx Freight turned in lower-than-expected revenue and profit during the latest quarter, due to continued weakness in the U.S. industrial segment that includes manufacturing, metals and chemicals. The Express unit's adjusted results improved during the quarter, helped by expense reductions and more international export volume, FedEx said.

The report alleged Republicans found evidence showing Cheney "tampered with at least one witness, Cassidy Hutchinson, by secretly communicating with Hutchinson without her attorney's knowledge." The select committee's 10 public hearings and final report featured numerous Republican witnesses, including many senior officials from the Trump White House, campaign and administration, Cheney noted in the statement. Hutchinson’s lawyer, William H. Jordan, said in a statement that the allegations that Hutchinson colluded with Cheney “are preposterous.”“Ms. Hutchinson, a close aide to Trump White House chief of staff Mark Meadows, testified both privately and publicly to the committee about her knowledge of the lead-up Jan. 6 and what unfolded that day. While Republicans say there have been witnesses who have disputed Hutchinson’s account, it has also been corroborated by others.

CNN —Archaeologists working in Arizona have discovered what appear to be the oldest firearms ever found in the continental United States: two cannons abandoned by a Spanish expeditionary force that was attacked by Native Americans. The 42-inch-long (107-centimeter) bronze cannons, also known as wall guns, were found by independent researcher Deni Seymour. Although these cannons would have been deadly, they were slow to load and reload, Seymour told CNN. “They were probably overwhelmed by the attacking force and likely were engaged in hand-to-hand combat from their bedsides,” she said. Next, Seymour hopes to find the rest of the trail traveled by Coronado’s expedition, and to document 12 known sites along the Arizona portion of the trail.

President Joe Biden said in an interview published in part on Tuesday that he is in favor of a ban on stock trading by members of Congress, taking a position on an issue that has been the subject of discussion and proposed legislation in recent years. Shakir noted during the interview that Biden did not own stock during his decades as a senator. Congressional stock trading has become a political flashpoint on Capitol Hill and beyond, as ethics watchdogs and some lawmakers allege that members of Congress who trade stocks are profiting from insider knowledge. Legislation banning congressional stock trading has been introduced repeatedly in recent years, but has never been passed by Congress. Former President Barack Obama signed a bill aimed at preventing insider trading by members of Congress and aides and increasing reporting requirements in 2012.

Grubhub will pay $25 million to settle charges it misled customers about the cost of their delivery and drivers about how much they could earn on the food-delivery platform. Grubhub also allegedly engaged in false advertising to attract drivers, citing hourly pay rates "well above what drivers could realistically expect to earn," according to a release accompanying the civil complaint. Finally, Grubhub falsely advertised restaurants on its platform that had not signed up with it. “Today’s action holds Grubhub to account, putting an end to these illegal practices and securing nearly $25 million for the people cheated by Grubhub’s tactics. The agencies had sought a $140 million judgment against the company, but reduced it to what Grubhub is able to pay, the agencies said.

CLEVELAND — Fresh off a comfortable re-election victory in 2018, Sen. Sherrod Brown, D-Ohio, considered running for president on a populist message aimed at the many working-class Midwest voters who had fled the Democratic Party in favor of Donald Trump. He spoke of a “post-Senate mission” to reorient Democrats as the “party of workers” in Middle America. “But I lost in large part because the national reputation of the Democratic Party is that we are sort of a lighter version of a corporation — a corporate party. And that’s one of the reasons that working-class voters have been willing to look away from the Democratic Party.
