Following Donald Trump's Presidential election win, 30-year fixed mortgage rates briefly surged, settling at 6.98% as of Thursday, according to Mortgage News Daily . Recent interest rate cuts have brought relief to credit card, personal loan and auto borrowers, but homebuyers are unlikely to catch a break as mortgage rates continue to climb. While mortgage rates often move in step with the Fed's benchmark rate, they're more directly tied to 10-year Treasury bond yields. These yields tend to rise when investors expect stronger economic growth and higher inflation — even when the Federal Reserve is cutting the federal funds rate. Either way, "continued deficit spending, coupled with discussions of additional tariffs on imports, is likely to keep [mortgage] rates elevated through the remainder of 2024," says Nourmand.

Three-time Emmy-winning journalist and Los Angeles TV news anchor Chauncy Glover died unexpectedly on Tuesday, his family announced. His family announced the news in a statement to KCAL, writing: "We, Sherry and Robert Glover, along with Chauncy’s beloved family, are devastated by the unimaginable loss of our beloved Chauncy. Before working with KCAL in Los Angeles, Glover was the first Black male main anchor for Houston’s KTRK, where he was on the air for eight years, according to KCAL. One of his accomplishments outside of his journalistic career was founding "The Chauncy Glover Project," a mentoring program created to help develop "inner-city teenage boys into upstanding and accomplished gentlemen," according to its website. Los Angeles County District Attorney George Gascón, who ascended to office vowing sweeping reforms to the criminal justice system and then faced intense criticism over public safety issues, lost his bid for re-election, The Associated Press projected. In office, Gascón quickly got to work implementing his reformist agenda. San Francisco District Attorney Chesa Boudin was recalled from office in 2022 after his critics assailed him as a soft-on-crime progressive. He then was the assistant attorney general for the U.S. Justice Department’s tax division under former President George W. Bush. Gascón, 70, previously was San Francisco attorney general — a job once held by Vice President Kamala Harris before she won the state attorney general’s office.

SAN ANTONIO — Shohei Ohtani had arthroscopic surgery on Tuesday to repair a labrum tear in his left shoulder, following an injury the Los Angeles Dodgers star suffered during Game 2 of the World Series on Oct. 26. The Dodgers say the Japanese two-way player is expected to be ready for spring training in February. Ohtani injured his nonthrowing shoulder while sliding into second base on a stolen base attempt, which resulted in a shoulder dislocation. Ohtani was just 1 for 11 at the plate with a walk in the World Series following the injury, but his presence was galvanizing for a lineup that had relied on his production all season. The right-hander had surgery on his throwing elbow last offseason, which kept him off the mound in 2024.

Tecoluca, El Salvador CNN —Sunlight pours into the cavernous building. Opened less than two years ago, it is already an iconic feature of the “new El Salvador” of President Nayib Bukele. The cells are meticulously clean — an intentional and stark contrast to the dingy and squalid prisons of El Salvador’s past. Only 22% of parents are "completely confident" in their ability to teach their children the basics of investing, the survey found, and they're looking to their kids' schools for help. All else being equal, 74% of parents said they would move their children to a different school if it offered financial education and investment courses. SIFMA with Wakefield Research polled 1,000 U.S. parents of students in grades K-12. Getting your child hands-on experience with investing is also a smart strategy, advisors say. Hands-on experience also gives children a chance to discuss with parents what investing means to them, she said.

U.S. homeowners are sitting on a record amount of equity, but higher interest rates over the past two years have made them reluctant to tap into it. While mortgage rates don't exactly follow the Fed's rate, home equity lines of credit, or HELOCs, are tied to it. "Over the past 10 quarters homeowners have extracted $476B in equity, exactly half the extraction we'd expect to see under more normal circumstances. Homeowners tend to use equity for home repairs, renovation projects and large expenses, such as college tuition. Key ports on Canada's West Coast, including its largest container port in Vancouver and the Port of Prince Rupert, were shut down by a labor strike on Monday. According to the Greater Vancouver Board of Trade, $800 million in trade flows through West Coast ports every day. Montreal processes 40% of all East Coast container traffic. Approximately $572 million in container trade arrives daily in the U.S. from Canada, according to U.S. Census data. A temporary loss of the Canadian West Coast trade gateway could push carriers to discharge import cargo along the already strained U.S. West Coast, said Alan Baer, CEO of OL USA, further increasing the dwell time of containers and elongating overall transits.

But on Saturday, at the LACMA Art+Film Gala in Los Angeles, Kardashian debuted another cultural artifact — a diamond-lined cross pendant, once a favorite of Princess Diana. Alberto E. That shortage also affects rent prices. In August, Harris unveiled a multi-pronged plan to lower housing costs. The plan also includes two main proposals to lower rent costs. Both plans to lower rent would be subject to congressional approval, meaning that the measures may be difficult to pass even if Harris wins the presidency. The DOJ and FBI are preparing to combat election lies but have limited authority. Affordable Care Act coverage is available for DACA recipients for the first time. For the DOJ that means setting up an Election Threats Task force, focusing on the prosecutions of people who threaten election officials. To understand how that might play out, NBC News interviewed current and former Justice Department and FBI officials, as well as legal experts. For many DACA recipients who are unable to get job-based health insurance, a lack of access to government-funded programs meant their insurance options were limited or too expensive.
