Just ignore the word ‘tariff’ — it’s a tax
  + stars: | 2024-10-16 | by ( Allison Morrow | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
Especially when you hear words like “tariffs.”But, given the economy’s central importance in the 2024 race, it’s worth hammering on an Econ 101 fact: Tariffs are a tax on Americans. Very simply: When the US government decides to put a tariff (read: tax) on, say, Chinese goods, the actual money going to the US Treasury comes from the American company doing the importing. “To me, the most beautiful word in the dictionary is tariff,” Trump said at one point. But it’s important to judge Trump’s first-term trade policies and the Biden-Harris approach against context of the unprecedented tariff wave Trump is planning if he gets to Round Two. Bottom line: Tariffs might be a beautiful word to Trump’s ear, but he’s telling a fictional story about what they do in practice.

There is an impending wave of new startups spinning out of larger AI labs, per Air Street Capital's State of AI report. AI labs are fragmenting due to ego clashes, philosophical disagreements, and commercial pressures. But as AI labs work towards the sector's holy grail, known as artificial general intelligence, those personalities have clashed — sometimes leading to a very public parting of ways. They are just some of the examples in a long line of AI labs that have fractured away from their juggernaut predecessors to form new startups. The exception would be if AI labs pivot toward building a niche model within a specific vertical, he said.

It's harder to answer questions or solve problems when you're asked to choose between more than four solutions, research shows. Neuroscientist Paul Glimcher has a simple strategy to cut through the noise and consistently make smart decisions: Instead of trying to pick the best choice, start by picking the worst. Process of elimination isn't exactly a new concept — you might have learned about it in elementary school — but it can help you avoid mistakes and improve your accuracy making everyday decisions, Glimcher said. "We're just good at the binary choice task — pick your best and eliminate your worst," Glimcher added. That's because picking from fewer options can help us make more accurate decisions, said Glimcher.

Google’s search dominance is unwinding

New York CNN —Google is so synonymous with its core product that its name is a verb that means “search.” Yet Google’s dominance of that market is shrinking. For the first time in decades, Google next year will not control a majority of the US search market, according to a forecast by advertising research firm eMarketer. Google will remain the biggest search player, maintaining a 48% share of American search advertising revenue. That ruling could result in the eventual breakup of the company’s search business. TikTok, the fastest growing social network, is getting into into the search business.

Fasting may lead to better blood sugar control and more fat loss, suggests a study on metabolic syndrome. AdvertisementEating all your meals and snacks in an eight- to 10-hour window each day may help you to lose weight and improve your blood sugar control, new research suggests. The condition includes high blood sugar as well as high levels of body fat, and increases the odds that someone will develop heart disease and diabetes. However, participants who did intermittent fasting lost a bit more weight, and had a much bigger drop in their body fat percentage, since more of the weight they lost was fat instead of muscle. Immigrants expected to boost the economyThere are several reasons why immigrants largely benefit the economy and job market, economists said. Immigrants take jobs but they also create new ones by spending in local economies and by starting businesses, economists said. One 2020 research paper from the National Bureau of Economic Research found immigrants are 80% more likely to become entrepreneurs than native workers. To the extent there's job competition from new immigrants, it tends to fall mostly on prior immigrants rather than native U.S. workers, according to the National Academies paper. "Sudden surges of immigration obviously affect the ability of native workers to find and take jobs on a given afternoon," Clemens said.
