CNN —India’s second nuclear-capable ballistic missile submarine joined its naval fleet late last month, a move the government says strengthens its nuclear deterrent as New Delhi casts a wary eye at both China and Pakistan. The de facto border between India and China, known as the Line of Actual Control, has been a longtime flashpoint between the two. India’s next ballistic missile subs could be years away, however, if history is any predictor of the future. Arighaat was launched almost seven years ago, and if that timeline from launch to commissioning applies to the next Indian ballistic missile sub, it won’t join the service until 2030. GUWAHATI, India — Internet and mobile data services were suspended for five days and an indefinite curfew imposed in parts of India’s northeastern state of Manipur on Tuesday after student protests over continuing ethnic strife turned violent. Police say they suspect that the drones were used by Kuki militants, a claim denied by Kuki groups. Protesters threw stones and plastic bottles in front of the main gate of the state governor’s residence, police said in a statement. As protests spilled over into Tuesday, the local government imposed a curfew in the Imphal Valley and surrounding districts and suspended internet services in five valley districts. Authorities shut down the internet in Manipur last year, in one of India’s longest enforced outages.

CNN —Glenn Lowry, the longest-serving director of New York’s Museum of Modern Art (MoMA), is stepping down after three decades in the role, he announced Tuesday. CNN —The deep landslides beneath the multimillion-dollar homes in Rancho Palos Verdes moved at an almost glacial pace, until they didn’t. This affluent coastal city in Southern California, around 30 miles south of Los Angeles, has long enticed people with its Pacific Ocean views and lush greenery. This February, an atmospheric river dumped record amounts of rain across southern California, triggering hundreds of mudslides and leaving at least nine people dead. In July, a landslide triggered by heavy monsoon rains in India’s southern state of Kerala killed at least 150 people. In Southern California, “people wanted to pretend they lived in the tropics,” he said, “and planted a lot of landscaping that required lots of watering.”Deforestation is another factor.

Despite being disqualified from the gold medal match just hours after she made Olympic history, Vinesh Phogat is still being hailed by many online for her bravery and resilience. The wrestler from Team India, who on Tuesday became the first woman from her country to make the Olympic finals, will not be participating in the women’s wrestling 50kg gold-medal match due to being "a few grams" over the weight class, according to the Indian Olympic Association. The Indian Olympic Association didn’t elaborate on the matter and requested privacy for Phogat.
