Private prison stocks rose on Monday after President-elect Donald Trump selected immigration hard-liner Tom Homan as his “border czar.”The Geo Group jumped more than 4% and and CoreCivic nearly 8% in premarket trading. Homan served as the head of Immigration and Customs Enforcement during Trump’s first term. Homan told a conservative conference in July that he “will run the biggest deportation operation this country has ever seen” when Trump returns to office. The second Trump administration would allow for contracting with the U.S. Marshalls Services and the Federal Bureau of Prisons, Boltansky said. “More importantly they would take a far more aggressive stance on border enforcement, which would impact the ICE business lines at these firms,” the analyst told clients.

WASHINGTON — President-elect Donald Trump announced late Sunday that Tom Homan, the former acting director of U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement who backed his controversial "zero tolerance" policy, will be his administration's "border czar." "I am pleased to announce that the Former ICE Director, and stalwart on Border Control, Tom Homan, will be joining the Trump Administration, in charge of our Nation’s Borders ('The Border Czar'), including, but not limited to, the Southern Border, the Northern Border, all Maritime, and Aviation Security," Trump said on Truth Social. "Likewise, Tom Homan will be in charge of all Deportation of Illegal Aliens back to their Country of Origin. “You know, insane asylums, that’s ‘Silence of the Lambs’ stuff.”Homan is the latest person Trump has announced will join his administration. Trump had previously announced that Susie Wiles, his co-campaign manager, will be the White House chief of staff.

CNN —Given his rhetoric demonizing undocumented immigrants and his promise to engage in mass deportations when he returns to the White House in January, it’s kind of shocking that deportations actually dropped in the four years Donald Trump was president. Appearing Monday on Fox News, Homan said Trump 2.0 will be like his first term but with more deportations. During his first term, Trump also promised mass deportations. But that’s about half the 2.9 million deportations undertaken during Barack Obama’s first term and fewer than the 1.9 million deportations during Obama’s second term. It’s on par with Biden’s 1.49 million deportations, according to updated calculations Bush-Joseph shared with me.

Mass deportations may affect the economy, including inflation and the job market. Homan is set to act as Trump's "border czar" after previously serving as his first acting director of US Immigration and Customs Enforcement. "Likewise, Tom Homan will be in charge of all Deportation of Illegal Aliens back to their Country of Origin. Homan earlier told Fox Business Network's Maria Bartiromo that Trump's immigration plan would be a "cost savings" initiative. Most agreed that mass deportations could increase inflation, lower GDP, and negatively impact the job market over the next few years.

Magnetospheres are the protective bubbles around planets like Earth that have magnetic cores and magnetic fields, and they are driven by the planet’s magnetic field. Voyager 2’s data showed that Uranus’ magnetosphere was home to unexpectedly powerful electron radiation belts. Voyager 2’s observations of Uranus’ magnetosphere defied the way astronomers understand how magnetic fields trap energetic particles and their radiation. The first panel (left) of this artist's concept depicts how Uranus' protective magnetosphere behaved prior to Voyager 2's flyby. Fortunately, sending a dedicated mission to study Uranus in the future has become a priority for NASA, according to a report released in 2022.

By contrast, that projected growth would take a hit if Trump were able to enact his mass deportation plans. An estimated 11 million unauthorized immigrants reside in the United States, but Trump’s focus has mostly been on deporting immigrants with criminal records. Goldman Sachs reported in June that it estimates about 1.2 million unauthorized immigrants, or 8% of that population, have criminal convictions. Here’s the financial impact for Americans if Trump follows through on his mass deportation plan. The report noted that inflation could peak at 0.5 percentage points higher under a mass deportation plan.

Now, in a full circle moment, the immigration hard-liner is leaving Fox and rejoining Trump as the president-elect prepares to take office again. Once Homan became a Fox contributor, he was a regular presence across the network’s morning and prime time shows. Once President Joe Biden took office, Homan became an outspoken critic of the Democratic administration. “I have been on this network for years complaining about this administration did to this border,” Homan said in Monday’s appearance. Homan will no longer be a Fox contributor, effective Monday, a network spokesperson confirmed to CNN.

Their findings, set out in a study published last month, suggest it’s a mix of human-caused climate change and the region’s unusual geology. Graphic shows the process by which warming temperatures and the region's unique geography can lead to explosive craters, according to new research. Vladimir Pushkare/Russian Centre of Arctic Exploration/AFP/Getty ImagesWhat most scientists do agree on, however, is that climate change is playing a role, and may lead to an increase in these explosive craters in the future. As climate change accelerates, he added, it may lead to more permafrost degradation, powerful gas blowouts and new craters. Not only are the craters affected by climate change, they also contribute to it.

The coming reign of the only child
  + stars: | 2024-11-11 | by ( Ann Friedman | ) www.businessinsider.com   time to read: +16 min
American women are having kids later in life, leaving less time to bear multiple children. American women in general are having children later, but the delay is most pronounced among the most educated. Even religious conservatives, who are biblically motivated to be fruitful and multiply, are starting families later and more often having only one child. So what will the coming reign of the only child mean for America? Just as having children is no longer seen as a required stage of adulthood, having siblings will no longer be a de facto part of childhood.

CNN —President-elect Donald Trump announced Sunday night that Tom Homan, who served as the acting director of Immigration and Customs Enforcement in his last administration, will be in charge of the nation’s borders. CNN reported earlier Sunday that Trump was expected to tap Homan to serve in a czar-like role. Immigration was a cornerstone of Trump’s 2024 campaign, and he repeatedly vowed to deport millions of undocumented immigrants. In a sign of his influence in Trump’s orbit, Homan spoke at the Republican National Convention in July. “You’re damn right.”A career law enforcement officer, Homan served as the public face of the first Trump administration’s aggressive efforts to step up immigration enforcement before retiring in 2018.

Mass deportation would exacerbate this economic issue, say employers and economists. Leverant says it is still being determined how jobs lost from a mass deportation would be filled. "Looking at specific occupations, about one-quarter of farm workers, agricultural graders, and sorters are undocumented workers. "One of the natural problems with undocumented workers, we don't know how many are here because they are undocumented. A mass deportation is not possible without crippling economic impact," he said.

Alex Brandon/APSusie Wiles, the understated yet formidable force behind Donald Trump’s third presidential bid, has operated in a sphere of discretion, wielding influence without the spotlight. “Susie likes to stay sort of in the back,” Trump said Wednesday as he called on her to address his West Palm Beach victory party. Yet, for many of Trump’s closest allies, it is precisely Wiles’ unassuming style that has assured her longevity. Since Trump’s turbulent departure from Washington, Wiles has deftly steered his political apparatus from Mar-a-Lago, instilling a level of discipline and order rarely associated with the former president. Trump, in turn, has given her a fitting moniker: “The Ice Maiden.”Keep reading about Trump’s pick for White House chief of staff.

In today’s edition, senior national political reporter Jonathan Allen explains why Democrats need to retool their economic message during Donald Trump's second term. Plus, senior national politics reporter Matt Dixon writes that the battle to succeed Trump in four years is already underway. How Trump broke both parties — and where Democrats go from hereBy Jonathan AllenOver the course of the last decade, President-elect Donald Trump broke both national political parties. Before Trump, Democrats nominated — and the country twice elected — Barack Obama, a candidate who ran against leaders that walked the country into forever wars and a finance-and-housing crisis that nearly toppled the economy. Harris’ economic policy offerings were largely expansions of Biden proposals, such as more generous homebuyer and child tax credits than he called for.
