MONTREAL/BOGOTA Dec 16 (Reuters) - Latin America is drawing early investment for jet fuel produced from materials like forest residues and palm oil as emission-conscious airlines scour emerging markets for less-polluting fuel to power flights, industry executives say. While most sustainable aviation fuel, or SAF, is produced in the United States, Europe, and Singapore, Latin America is emerging as a budding market. "Latin America right now is really a hot spot for Honeywell." Producing and distributing SAF in regions with faster-growing traffic like Latin America is key to meeting industry targets, said Landon Loomis, Latin America president for U.S. planemaker Boeing (BA.N). And Vibra Energia (VBBR3.SA) is working with Brasil BioFuels (BBF) to produce palm oil-based jet fuel in 2025.

[1/2] Global airline industry body International Air Transport Association (IATA) Director General Willie Walsh attends an interview with Reuters in Doha, Qatar, June 19, 2022. Airlines lost tens of billions of dollars in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic, but air travel has partially recovered and some airports have struggled to cope. DOWNSIDE RISKIATA believes global air traffic levels will return to pre-COVID or 2019 levels by 2024, led by the United States and with Asia-Pacific "notably lagging." If China does not loosen restrictions, airlines' profitability would be affected. Walsh said airlines had survived the worst of the downturns, though Europe's fragmented market remained an area to watch.

Airlines lost tens of billions of dollars in 2020 and 2021 due to the pandemic but air travel has partially recovered and some airports have struggled to cope. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) now expects a net profit of $4.7 billion for the industry next year, with more than 4 billion passengers set to fly. For 2022, IATA narrowed its forecast for industry-wide losses to $6.9 billion from $9.7 billion. "That is a great achievement considering the scale of the financial and economic damage caused by government imposed pandemic restrictions," said IATA Director General Willie Walsh, commenting on the projected return to profit in 2023. IATA said that its forecast is based on a gradual reopening of China to international traffic and the easing of domestic zero-COVID restrictions.

London CNN Business —The global airline industry is expected to return to profitability in 2023 for the first time in four years. In a forecast released Tuesday, the International Air Transport Association predicted that airlines will earn a net profit of $4.7 billion, despite fears of a global recession. Consumer demand for air travel has been boosted by the reopening of borders closed by the pandemic, as well as a strong US dollar that’s encouraged more Americans to travel overseas. “While we are mindful of macroeconomic headwinds, the travel industry is experiencing a counter-cyclical recovery,” Delta Air Lines CEO Ed Bastian said when delivering the company’s earnings results in October. “Global demand is continuing to ramp [up] as consumers shift spend to experiences, businesses return to travel and international markets continue to reopen.”— Chris Isidore contributed reporting.
The global airline industry is set to return to profitability again next year following a near-three year downturn fueled by the Covid-19 pandemic, an industry body said Tuesday. The International Air Transport Association (IATA) said it expects the industry to post a "small" net profit of $4.7 billion in 2023, with more than 4 billion passengers set to take to the skies. Director General Willie Walsh told CNBC the predictions marked a "step in the right direction" for an industry clobbered by pandemic-induced travel restrictions and resultant staff shortages. "The recovery is going well," Walsh told CNBC's Julianna Tatelbaum. For 2022, IATA also reduced its forecast for industry-wide losses to $6.9 billion from $9.7 billion in June's outlook.
U.S. domestic demand was only 0.8% below than 2019 levels in October, while globally, domestic travel demand was 22.1% lower. REGIONAL PILOT SHORTAGEThe steep pay rise on offer to Delta pilots follows a series of large increases at U.S. regional airlines that serve as feeders to major carriers. Uniquely among world markets, the United States requires pilots even at regional airlines to have a minimum of 1,500 hours of flying experience. Faced with growing shortages of entry-level pilots and rapid attrition of more experienced ones to major airlines, U.S. regional carriers have lifted pay rapidly. The increases put pressure on major airlines to ensure their entry-level pay attracts joiners from regional carriers to cover retirements and planned fleet growth.
watch nowThe aviation industry requires more carrot and less stick going forward to become more sustainable, according to the director general of the International Air Transport Association. "Quite honestly, all of the evidence that we have available shows that the carrot is far more effective than the stick," Walsh replied. Among other things, this would see both maritime and aviation fuels taxed. "So for us, the key to our goal is the use of sustainable aviation fuels — the science there is proven." "What we've got to do is turn what is very low levels of production of sustainable fuels into widespread availability."

Surging fuel, inflation, and labor costs have sent private jet charter prices up significantly. It's a similar story for flyExclusive, another private jet charter firm. "So far it hasn't negatively impacted demand," Seagrave tells Insider, but admits that further price rises may have an impact sooner or later. For flyExclusive passengers, fuel represents between a quarter and 37% of the charter cost, Seagrave tells Insider. VistaJet runs a membership service which means its customers pay an hourly fee, but they still have to pay a fuel surcharge, Qi says.
SYDNEY, Oct 11 (Reuters) - Passenger airline traffic in the Asia-Pacific region should recover to around 73% of 2019 levels by year-end as travel restrictions relax, up from 53% in August, the Asia-Pacific head of airline industry group IATA said on Tuesday. "There is no mistaking I think the momentum is very strong especially with all major markets in the Asia-Pacific now open except for China," IATA Regional Vice President, Asia Pacific, Philip Goh told reporters on a webinar. Hong Kong CNN Business —International airlines are scrambling to add more flights to Hong Kong as the city ends two and a half years of quarantine measures, leading to a surge in demand for travel. “As Hong Kong’s home airline, we are fully committed to rebuilding the connectivity of the Hong Kong aviation hub,” it said in a statement. This will absolutely increase the demand for travel to and from Hong Kong,” Christoph Meyer, Lufthansa’s general manager of sales for Hong Kong, Macao and South China, said in a statement. International Air Transport Association Director General Willie Walsh said last week that China’s zero-Covid policy had “devastated” Hong Kong. Friday’s news puts Hong Kong back on “the right track,” said Dr. Kam Hung Ng, assistant professor of aviation engineering at the Hong Kong Polytechnic University.

Travellers queue up for shuttle bus to quarantine hotels at the Hong Kong International Airport, amid the coronavirus disease (COVID-19) pandemic, in Hong Kong, China, August 1, 2022. REUTERS/Tyrone SiuHONG KONG, Sept 23 (Reuters) - Hong Kong will scrap its controversial COVID-19 hotel quarantine policy for all arrivals from Sept. 26, more than 2.5 years after it was first implemented, in a long-awaited move for many residents and businesses in the financial hub. The former British colony is a global outlier outside mainland China in imposing hotel quarantine for international arrivals, in line with the country's "dynamic zero" COVID strategy. Both events have been widely seen as a bid to show that Hong Kong can resume business as usual. Hong Kong has reported more than 1.7 million COVID infections and 9,934 deaths since the pandemic began.
Walsh added that while consumers are paying higher ticket prices, airlines are not necessarily making a profit. watch nowAirline ticket prices have spiked by 25% in the past year — the biggest annual jump since 1989. Russia-Ukraine warBut another factor could contribute to even higher ticket prices — Russia's announcement of a military mobilization, said Qatar Airways CEO Akbar Al Baker. Oil prices jumped by more than 2% after Putin's announcement, following concerns of an escalation of the war in Ukraine and squeezing oil and gas supplies. Hopes for affordable sustainable fuelAl Baker called for more investments in alternative fuel, and that Qatar Airlines is "ready to invest in sustainable aviation fuel" on the condition that it is "reasonably priced."
