Talk Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Great ‘Indiana Jones’ AdventureThere’s a photo of Phoebe Waller-Bridge, taken at an Emmys afterparty in 2019, that captures, better than any other contemporary celebrity photo I’ve seen, the enduring allure and glamour of Hollywood success. Opinion | R.I.P., the Sun Triangle

It was an obtuse triangle whose steepest side pointed directly at the sun at solar noon — the moment in the day when the sun is highest overhead — on the summer solstice. The Sun Triangle, as Spilhaus named it, gave off a Stonehenge vibe to those who knew what it was. People would gather beneath the giant triangle — once described by The New York Times as resembling the head of a pterodactyl — and watch the shadow beneath it shrink as solar noon approached. This year the Northern Hemisphere’s summer solstice occurred on Wednesday at 10:58 a.m. Eastern Daylight Time. Solar noon in Manhattan came about two hours later, at 12:57 p.m. (Solar noon jumps ahead an hour on the clock during daylight saving time.

Take the orange-and-black insects that were sitting on curled viburnum leaves and about to be exterminated. “That’s why we included a whole section of beneficials on the website,” Dr. Sadof said. The person in charge knew they were conifers, and therefore assumed that if they were alive, they would be evergreen — but dawn redwoods are among the few deciduous conifers. The key, these scientists agree, lies in cultivating our curiosity about what’s going on — even the nasty-looking stuff. “If you go in there with this attitude of ‘yuck,’” Dr. Beckerman said, “that’s the kryptonite of curiosity.”

Mixed Business at an Anxious Art Basel
  + stars: | 2023-06-16 | by ( Scott Reyburn | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: 1 min
After an underwhelming series of auctions in New York in May, dealers exhibiting at this year’s Art Basel fair in Switzerland — which opened to V.I.P.s on Tuesday and welcomes the general public from Friday onward — hoped to quell concerns about a dip in the art market. The 53rd annual edition of this bellwether Swiss event, featuring 284 international galleries specializing in 20th and 21st-century art, was the first under the watch of Art Basel’s new chief executive, Noah Horowitz. It is being held in a climate of geopolitical uncertainty, with high interest rates and inflation hampering consumer spending in many countries. “There’s quite a lot of anxiety around,” said Paul Gray, the director of Gray gallery, based in Chicago and New York. But in his 40-year experience, he added, the art market suffered from few major downturns.

Spider-Man/Miles Morales (voice of Shameik Moore) Photo: SONY PICTURES ENTERTAINMENTIt’s easy to disdain and deplore (and I do disdain and deplore) the two letters that ate Hollywood: “I.P.” But intellectual property is like bread: It’s often stale and bland, but it can be fresh and delightful. The latter attributes were evident in every sparkling and witty minute of 2018’s animated triumph “Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse,” which posited a multiverse in which all sorts of different Spider-People existed simultaneously in their own worlds rendered in distinct styles of animation. The script reworked 1960s characters and storylines with heart and comic brilliance, plus one of the craftiest and twistiest plotlines of any comic-book blockbuster.

Theaters are installing heated lounge chairs that fully recline or have built-in trays and buttons to summon waiters. Some auditoriums now have screens on the sides as well as at the front. One outside Fort Worth built a gangplank 22 feet above an arcade floor — walk it if you dare. Another in Dobbs Ferry, N.Y., has a kitchen and lobby bar with TV screens so a customer can, say, catch the end of a ballgame before the feature starts. But they tried the Dobbs Ferry venue, part of the Look Dine-In Cinemas chain, after it opened, sharing a pizza and a salad before “80 for Brady.”“It felt like a real date night,” she said.

How Do I Upgrade My Carhartt Wardrobe?

Carhartt is my default. It should not be news to you, but if Carhartt is your default, you are way ahead of the game. Pushing your wardrobe boundaries is an effective, easy way to start to push all sorts of boundaries. Start with Carhartt itself, which figured out it could be fashionable back in 1989, 100 years after the company itself was founded, and started Carhartt W.I.P., the design-forward arm of the business. Wear your usual Carhartt workshirt on top, but let a pop of turquoise, emerald, yellow, red or pink show through.

Frank Ocean was constructing an ice-skating rink in the Sonoran desert. Nor did I really believe that I would be able to watch Ocean’s set — his first major public performance since 2017 — on an officially sanctioned livestream. Enigma has always been a tenet of Ocean’s public persona. We were all in it, waiting in the Frank Ocean IG Live, together. Fortunately, I soon found @Morgandoesntcare, a young musician from North Carolina who facilitated the guerrilla video stream that brought Ocean’s set to the masses, reaching 130,000 viewers.
For this we can thank the State Legislature, which passed a law last year allowing licensed vendors, including pop-ups, to sell food at breweries. Beer makers had been urging the change for years, said Ann Reilly, the executive director of the New York City Brewers Guild. In most of the state, the vendors are often food trucks stationed just outside the building. Follow New York Times Cooking on Instagram, Facebook, YouTube, TikTok and Pinterest. Decarb bros believe it’s all going to be OK. See: “Decarb bros,” a term they have embraced regardless of gender identity or weight-lifting ability. “We are against doomerism,” said Billy Casagrande, who works at Scale Microgrids, a climate tech start-up. The consensus among young people seems to be “that we are screwed as it relates to climate,” the self-described decarb bro, who is 25, continued.

Beyond Catastrophe A New Climate Reality Is Coming Into View By David Wallace-WellsYou can never really see the future, only imagine it, then try to make sense of the new world when it arrives. (A United Nations report released this week ahead of the COP27 climate conference in Sharm el Sheikh, Egypt, confirmed that range.) A little lower is possible, with much more concerted action; a little higher, too, with slower action and bad climate luck. There were climate-change skeptics in some very conspicuous positions of global power. New emissions peaks are expected both this year and next, which means that more damage is being done to the future climate of the planet right now than at any previous point in history.
