Gigacasting is a form of die-casting — pouring materials like molten aluminum into large molds to form parts. For example, the front and rear portions of the early Model 3 chassis each contained more than 70 parts, according to Tesla. Reducing weight ultimately means more range for the customer, and substituting one large megacast for dozens of stamped parts reduces labor and boosts production, he said. Severinson views repair as a solvable challenge: "There is a solution to repairing also a casted rear floor," he said. Burns and Volk say that might be a sign that the company is hitting some technical limits.

Investigators found a small drone in the car owned by the gunman who tried to assassinate former President Donald J. Trump — and believe it was used to survey the site of Mr. Trump’s rally in Butler, Pa., at least once before the shooting, according to law enforcement officials. Thomas Crooks, 20, visited the area near the fairgrounds used for the rally on July 7 — six days before the event — and appears to have made another trip the morning of the shooting, according to geolocation data found on one of his two cellphones, the officials said. At some point last Saturday, Mr. Crooks seems to have flown the drone to gather footage for a layout of the Butler Farm Show grounds using a preprogrammed flight path, according to an official briefed on the situation who requested anonymity because the person was not authorized to speak about a continuing investigation. The discovery of the drone was delayed when investigators found two rudimentary explosive devices in his Hyundai Sonata shortly after Mr. Crooks — a highly intelligent and technologically sophisticated community college graduate — was felled by a sniper after bloodying Mr. Trump’s ear, killing a man in the crowd and seriously injuring two other people.

But the Secret Service, the agency charged with protecting Mr. Trump, did not stop him from taking the stage. Eight minutes after Mr. Trump started to speak, Mr. Crooks fired off bullets that left the Republican presidential nominee bloodied and a rally visitor dead. Image Secret Service snipers surveilling the surrounding area before Mr. Trump began to speak. But that created a blind spot, outside the security perimeter but well within rifle range of Mr. Trump. Mr. Crooks also typed in “major depressive disorder” and searched for dates and places for appearances for both Mr. Biden and Mr. Trump.

Maskot | Maskot | Getty ImagesBuying a new electric vehicle isn't the only way consumers can access a $7,500 federal EV tax credit. Perhaps the best known of them — the "new clean vehicle" tax credit — is a $7,500 tax break for consumers who buy a new EV. But many auto dealers are also passing along a $7,500 tax break to lessees, via a different (and, experts say, lesser-known) mechanism called the "qualified commercial clean vehicles" tax credit. This EV tax credit "leasing loophole" has likely been a key driver of increased leasing uptake in 2024, Barclays auto analysts said in an equity research note published in June. The $7,500 tax credit enables dealers to charge low monthly payments for leases, thereby helping "stoke demand" for EVs, Barclays wrote.

On Friday, he went to a shooting range where he was a member, and practiced firing, a law enforcement official told CNN. Yet nearly 48 hours after the shooting, investigators are struck by the lack of leads they’re finding about Crooks’ mindset and possible motives. Investigators parsing through his online search history haven’t found any indication of him researching how to make home-made explosives, law enforcement officials said. While investigators had hoped that breakthough would help them understand what drove him to attempt to assassinate Trump, they’re still struggling to make sense of it, law enforcement officials said. But they didn’t seem to know much about what was going on in his life recently, law enforcement sources said.

The Hyundai Santa Fe is a mid-size three-row family SUV that's all-new for 2024. I recently reviewed a well-equipped Santa Fe in the off-road focused XRT trim. I was impressed by the Santa Fe's rugged looks, useful interior features, and updated tech. This year, Hyundai gave the Santa Fe a full-on makeover, complete with rugged, angular looks and a standard third-row seat. While still slotted between Hyundai's compact Tucson and the brand's flagship Palisade, the new Santa Fe now has a distinct look and feel that stands out from the crowd.

On X, Kei truck fans share pictures of mini trucks they spot in the wild. Most states lack Kei-specific regulation entirely, and so far, only 19 states allow Kei trucks on public roads. Workers at South Korean tech giant Samsung Electronics will extend an unprecedented strike over pay and benefits "indefinitely," its labor union said in a statement on Wednesday. This is the first strike by the labor union in Samsung Electronics' entire 55-year history, according to local media. "The company remains committed to engaging in good faith negotiations with the union," Samsung said. The NSEU, which extended the strike saying Samsung management was not keen on holding discussions, asserted the strike had disrupted chip production. Samsung Electronics is the world's largest maker of memory chips, commonly found in consumer devices such as smartphones and laptops.

Tesla’s once-commanding share of the market for electric vehicles in the United States slipped below 50 percent in the second quarter of the year even as sales of battery-powered cars surged to a record, according to new estimates published Tuesday by a research firm. It was the first time the company’s market share fell below 50 percent in a quarter, according to Cox. The firm, a leading auto industry researcher, estimates market share based on registrations, company reports and other data. Before that car, very few electric vehicles were sold in the United States. A year earlier, electric vehicles accounted for 7.2 percent of the market, Cox said.
