Hunter Biden, son of U.S. President Joe Biden, departs federal court after a plea hearing on two misdemeanor charges of willfully failing to pay income taxes in Wilmington, Delaware, U.S. July 26, 2023. REUTERS/Jonathan Ernst/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsWASHINGTON, Sept 6 (Reuters) - U.S. prosecutors said in a court filing on Wednesday they will seek an indictment of President Joe Biden's son, Hunter, by Sept. 29 in his tax and firearms case. "The government intends to seek the return of an indictment in this case before that date," Weiss wrote in a status report to U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika. In July, Noreika rejected a proposed plea deal that would have resolved the tax and gun charges, raising concerns over its legality and the scope of immunity it offered Hunter Biden. Republicans in Congress have raised the possibility of impeaching President Biden over his son's business dealings and accuse the Department of Justice of giving him a "sweetheart deal."

House Republicans are mulling a possible impeachment inquiry against the elder Biden, based partly on allegations that the president, his son and other family members have engaged in financial misconduct, allegations the White House strongly denies. The White House had no immediate comment. "Joe Biden has stated there was 'an absolute wall' between his family's foreign business schemes and his duties as vice president. "The National Archives must provide these unredacted records to further our investigation into the Biden family's corruption," the Republican said. A lawsuit claims Rudy Giuliani was paid $300,000 while pitching investors on an anti-Biden film. Giuliani allegedly said it would be a "kill shot" that would sink Joe Biden's campaign. By then, Giuliani was hard at work trying to dig up election-year dirt on Joe Biden in his capacity as President Trump's personal attorney. Giuliani, the lawsuit alleges, asked for the farmers' help finance efforts to make sure Trump was elected to a second term. The aborted Giuliani film project also forms part of a whistleblower disclosure from Johnathan Buma, an FBI special agent whose allegations were first reported by Insider.

The case is being heard in the U.S. state of Delaware, where Biden is represented by the Berger Harris law firm. "It is inadvisable for Mr. Clark to continue as counsel in this case," continued the joint filing from Berger Harris and Clark Smith Villazor, Clark's firm. In the filing, the two said Clark's withdrawal would not cause Biden substantial hardship since other firms involved in the case would continue to represent him.

Rep. Jeff Van Drew, then a Democrat, voted against an impeachment inquiry into Trump in 2019. Now a Republican, he's urging an impeachment inquiry into Biden, despite similar political dynamics. Van Drew famously switched parties a few months later and has since become a stalwart Trump backer who votes in lockstep with House Republicans. "We have to be a little tough about this, we can't be weak-kneed as Republicans," Van Drew said on Fox Business recently. —Congressman Jeff Van Drew (@Congressman_JVD) August 11, 2023On a conference call with House Republicans on Monday, Van Drew again spoke up in favor of the effort, according to multiple reports.

REUTERS/Jonathan Ernst/File PhotoAug 14 (Reuters) - Lawyers for Hunter Biden said in a late Sunday court filing that prosecutors reneged on a plea deal that would have resolved tax and firearms charges against the U.S. president’s son as his father seeks reelection. Delaware federal prosecutors said on Friday that Hunter Biden may be headed for a criminal trial after plea negotiations broke down. U.S. District Judge Maryellen Noreika rejected a proposed plea deal in July, raising concerns over its legality and the scope of immunity it offered Hunter Biden. If the case goes to trial, the president would be campaigning for reelection in November 2024, likely against former president Donald Trump, as his son faces criminal prosecution.

Hunter Biden, son of U.S. President Joe Biden, departs federal court after a plea hearing on two misdemeanor charges of willfully failing to pay income taxes in Wilmington, Delaware, July 26, 2023. But Hunter Biden's lawyers also said in a new Delaware federal court filing that a second agreement with prosecutors that would allow him to escape conviction for a gun-related crime is "valid and binding." Lawyers for Hunter Biden told a judge that federal prosecutors on Friday decided to "renege" on a previously agreed deal in which the son of President Joe Biden would plea guilty to tax crimes in exchange for a recommended no-jail sentence. A key sticking point for the judge was the requirement that she, not the U.S. Department of Justice, be the one to decide if Hunter Biden violates the gun agreement over a two-year period. After Noreika said she would give prosecutors and defense lawyers more time to answer her questions, Hunter Biden pleaded not guilty to the tax crimes.

Hunter Biden, son of U.S. President Joe Biden, departs federal court after a plea hearing on two misdemeanor charges of willfully failing to pay income taxes in Wilmington, Delaware, July 26, 2023. WASHINGTON — House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer, who is leading the investigation into Hunter Biden's foreign business dealings, said Thursday his panel plans to subpoena members of the Biden family, including possibly President Joe Biden. We are going to subpoena the family," Comer, R-Ky., said in an appearance on Fox Business. Comer said that had he issued a subpoena for Joe and Hunter Biden on his first day as Oversight chairman, a judge would have thrown it out. Last month, Hunter Biden pleaded not guilty to two charges of failing to pay federal taxes related to his business dealings.

U.S. Attorney David Weiss holds a press conference Thursday, May 3, 2018, at his district office in Wilmington, Del. WASHINGTON — U.S. Attorney General Merrick Garland announced on Friday that David Weiss, the federal prosecutor in Delaware who has led the criminal investigation of President Joe Biden's son, Hunter Biden, will be appointed special counsel in the case. Garland said that Weiss, who was appointed by former President Donald Trump to become a U.S. Attorney in 2018, asked earlier this week to be named special counsel. At nearly the same time Garland was announcing the special counsel investigation of the president's son, federal prosecutors revealed in new court filings that they had reached an "impasse" in plea negotiations with Hunter Biden's lawyers. "The Government now believes that the case will not resolve short of a trial," they wrote in a federal filing in Delaware.

Hunter Biden's legal troubles just got a whole lot worse. Meanwhile, Biden's plea deal for tax crimes and a gun charge has collapsed. The surprise announcement came as federal prosecutors suggested that a plea deal with the president's son is now effectively dead after a Trump-appointed judge refused to accept it. Many in the GOP are still furious over Weiss' role in Hunter Biden's now-potentially dead plea deal. "'[T]he parties are at an impasse and are not in agreement on either a plea agreement or a diversion agreement," prosecutors wrote in the court filing.

WASHINGTON — After more than two years of demanding that the Justice Department appoint a special counsel to investigate Hunter Biden, Republicans in Congress finally got their wish on Friday. "If Weiss negotiated the sweetheart deal that couldn't get approved, how can he be trusted as a Special Counsel?" Republicans argued that a special counsel probe would effectively draw a curtain around evidence they are seeking. The Biden administration is asking Congress to approve billions more in aid for Ukraine. In a letter addressed to House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, the White House requested more than $24 billion for assistance to Ukraine and other "international needs." It also asks Congress for $7.3 billion in economic, humanitarian, and security assistance to Ukraine and other countries impacted by Russia's invasion. The Biden administration also wants to replenish the coffers of FEMA, which is now contending with wildfires raging across the country. Despite the vocal misgivings of Trump and his allies in Congress, most members of Congress, from both parties, continue to support aid for Ukraine.

Former Fox News host Tucker Carlson could see two of the wealthiest GOP business megadonors, Rebekah Mercer and Peter Thiel, invest in his new media company, according to people familiar with the matter. Mercer has spoken with Carlson since his April departure from Fox News about possibly investing in his as yet unnamed media company, sources told CNBC. Thiel has hinted to allies that he could invest in the venture after hearing from Carlson's side, these people added. Shortly after leaving Fox, Carlson began hosting an episodic show on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter. Rebekah Mercer and Peter Thiel have for years been separate investors in a diverse array of conservative startups.

House Republicans appear increasingly likely to launch an impeachment inquiry into President Biden. Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell is bemoaning the increased use of the measure. As they've teased a potential impeachment inquiry, House Republicans have zeroed in on unproven allegations that both Biden and his son, Hunter, accepted millions in bribes from a Ukrainian gas company. They are also looking into Hunter Biden's business dealings more broadly, hoping to turn up evidence that those activities substantively involved then-Vice President Biden or affected US policy. McConnell, the Senate Republican leader since 2007, opposed both the first and second impeachments of former President Donald Trump.

House Republicans view it as almost certain that they will move forward with impeaching Biden this fall. But in actuality, House Republicans think it's likely they'll later impeach Biden. A vote to authorize an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden is not a direct vote on impeachment, but it would make a major escalation in House Republicans' probes of Biden. "Once the barn doors are open, so to speak, the horses are out," an unnamed senior House Republican told CNN. Of particular note are the 18 Republicans who represent congressional districts won by President Joe Biden in 2020.

Special counsel Jack Smith's second indictment against Trump alleges he unlawfully tried to overturn his election loss to President Joe Biden in the 2020 election. One day earlier, a former business partner of Hunter Biden testified that the younger Biden put his father on the phone during business meetings about 20 times, according to U.S. House members. Numerous GOP lawmakers and other supporters of Trump were quick to link the timing of Archer's testimony to Smith's indictment. White House spokesman Ian Sams posted that Archer "appears to have actually testified that President Biden wasn't involved and didn't discuss their business dealings. As they did following his first federal indictment in June, Trump's defenders attacked Smith and questioned his credibility.
