Black women are more likely than white women to die from even the most treatable types of breast cancer, a study published Tuesday in the Journal of Clinical Oncology found. While Black women and white women are diagnosed with breast cancer at similar rates, Black women are 40% more likely to die from the disease. For those with HR-positive, HER2-positive tumors, Black women were 34% more likely to die than white women. The Food and Drug Administration expanded the approval of Kisqali, a drug for metastatic breast cancer, to also treat patients with earlier stages of the disease, drugmaker Novartis said Tuesday. The approval means that tens of thousands of women diagnosed with early-stage breast cancer will have access to a medication that can help prevent their cancer from coming back. The expanded approval is for patients with HR-positive, HER2-negative breast cancer, the most common form of the disease. It comes as rates of breast cancer are increasing in younger women: From 2000 to 2019, rates of breast cancer in women ages 20 to 49 increased by 15.6% according to a study published earlier this year in JAMA Network Open. “You’re always going to be faced with the fact every single day that you have had breast cancer,” she said.

LeanIn and McKinsey have released their annual Women in the Workplace Report, and while there are clear signs of progress, women also face major headwinds. Companies now offer significantly more work-life benefits than they did even five years ago: In 2024, 92% of companies offered paid maternity leave and 86% offered paid paternity leave, up from 2018, when 78% of companies offered paid maternity leave and 70% offered paid paternity leave. "We're seeing some progress, but it's pretty fragile," says Sheryl Sandberg, the founder and board chair of LeanIn. "People have added women to senior leadership in staff roles, but if you're looking for, 'Where's the CEO pipeline?' While women have reached the C-suite, they disproportionately oversee staff functions, she points out, like legal and HR.

New York CNN —Mostly large US corporations are projecting an average increase in their base pay budgets of 3.9% for next year, according to a new survey of 300 compensation leaders across 11 major industries from The Conference Board. That is lower than the 4.4% average increase they paid out in 2023, which marked a 20-year high for base pay raises. But it is a tick up from the 3.8% bump that companies were paying out this year, according to The Conference Board. Base pay budget increases are typically viewed as a proxy for the average raises employees may receive. Actual base pay increases next year may be different if economic and business conditions change.

Two of Wall Street's biggest banks are adopting new policies to mitigate overwork and burnout for their junior investment bankers. Bank of America will use a new tool to better track working hours for junior bankers, the Journal report said, and flag HR when those go above 80. But the nature of investment banking work makes it hard to believe that such guardrails will stand the test of time. He completed an internship at an investment bank in New York last summer and accepted a return offer to start full time in 2025. If senior banking staff don't unilaterally enforce the cap and take it seriously, junior bankers can feel pressure to let the rules slide for the sake of the team and their own careers.
