Jim Cramer names hot sectors that could use a pullback
  + stars: | 2024-11-14 | by ( Julie Coleman | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +2 min
CNBC's Jim Cramer on Thursday suggested the post-election market has been extreme, with big wins and big losses. "We have a lot of overly loved stocks in this market right now," he said. Cramer pointed out the sharp rise of enterprise software stocks, saying that it seems these companies with in-demand products for big corporations can do no wrong. Cramer also highlighted two sectors he said are "too hated," but could bounce back, including pharmaceuticals and semiconductors. For semiconductors, Cramer concluded that those companies have suffered in part because some feel that new artificial intelligence-powered PCs haven't taken off.

Fed’s Powell: Rate cuts are still underway
  + stars: | 2024-11-14 | by ( Bryan Mena | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +4 min
Powell said more rate cuts are likely underway because the economy’s current trends and dynamics are expected to remain in place, at least in the short run. “We are moving policy over time to a more neutral setting,” Powell said in prepared remarks for an event in Dallas. It’s also too soon for Fed officials to conclude that October data is indicative of any new trend. While additional hot inflation reports could be factored in to the Fed’s decisions, officials are also looking at the US labor market closely. There’s also been tension between Trump and Powell, whom the president-elect first nominated in 2017 to steer the central bank.

In the race against the US for global tech supremacy, China has the upper hand in at least one critical area: rare earths. AdvertisementFor more than a year, Beijing has slowly been tightening its grip on critical minerals and rare earths. Now, there are fears that China could tighten the global rare earths supply chain even more. China's rare earth dominanceChina has long dominated the rare earths market due to supply, low labor costs, and lax environmental standards. In 2022, the US Department of Defense awarded $45 million to MP Materials for rare earth oxide processing, and in 2023, it awarded over $288 million to Lynas USA to set up commercial-scale rare earth oxide production facilities.

Inflation is drifting down in fits and starts, and so are restaurant menu prices. Diners are more likely to notice stabilizing menu prices at quick-service restaurants than at sit-down ones. But the rate at which all eateries changed their menu prices between the second and third quarters this year plummeted by 26%, the company said. Quick-service restaurants have benefited from slower growth in labor costs, Square found. The company estimates annual inflation faced by quick-service operators at 3.6% as of September, versus 4.3% for restaurants with table service.

The recall last week of two Bay Area officials who both championed progressive crime policies reflects long-held frustrations around a previous increase in violence targeting the Asian American community, experts say. The vote is indicative of Asian Americans’ rightward shift toward tougher crime policies like much of the state, analysts say. From March 2020 to December 2021, Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders across the country reported nearly 11,000 hate incidents, including verbal and physical abuse, being coughed at or spat on, and facing discrimination in the workplace. “And a lot of people say, ‘Oh, we’ve moved on from that era.’ I don’t think Asian Americans have,” said James Zarsadiaz, author of “Resisting Change in Suburbia,” whose research focuses on Asian American conservatism. In San Francisco, for example, officials received 60 reports of hate crimes against Asian Americans in 2021, compared with the nine in 2020.

Protesters waved Nazi flags outside of a community theater production of “The Diary of Anne Frank,” leaving performers "understandably shaken" by the hateful display in Michigan, officials said Monday. American Legion Post 141 in Howell, Mich., where the play by Frances Goodrich and Albert Hackett was being staged. "For this production, our cast was also on stage in character during intermission, which was when they found out as well," according to a statement by the Fowlerville Community Theater. The Fowlerville Community Theater drew direct parallels between the play — adapted from the famed diary of Anne Frank, a Jewish girl killed by Nazis in the Holocaust — and the events of Saturday night. Russia's economy faces stress as high interest rates fail to control inflation. Business leaders criticize high rates, warning of potential bankruptcies and an economic slowdown. The data from Rosstat, Russia's federal statistics service, show that food prices have generally risen across the board this year. To tame prices, Russia's central bank has hiked its key interest rate to a record high of 21% last month. High interest rates are irritating business leaders, who are more loudly critiquing the central bank's policies.

Here's what to know about the universe and where "Hot Frosty" fits in. AdvertisementThe Netflix Christmas Cinematic Universe is expanding again with the streamer's new movie "Hot Frosty." Netflix's latest Christmas offering, "Hot Frosty," follows a woman (Lacey Chabert) who accidentally turns a snowman into a real man (Dustin Milligan) with the power of a magical Christmas scarf. In "Falling for Christmas" and some of the other Netflix Christmas movies, characters see "Christmas Prince" movies on their TV screens. For this to make sense, "Hot Frosty" and the "Christmas Prince" franchise would have to exist in a separate parallel world to "Falling for Christmas" within the Netflix Christmas universe.

"He's throwing money out the window," Trump previously said of Biden's debt relief efforts, also calling broad relief "vile" and illegal. If they secure the majority in both the House and Senate, legislation to rescind Biden's debt relief efforts has a chance of being signed into law. Pompeii is limiting its daily visitor numbers
  + stars: | 2024-11-11 | by ( Jack Guy | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +2 min
CNN —Authorities at Pompeii in southern Italy are introducing a daily limit of 20,000 visitors as part of efforts to protect the ancient site. The measure, which will come into force from November 15, will see the introduction of personalized tickets bearing the name of each visitor, according to a statement from the Pompeii archaeological park published Friday. Pompeii has received an increasing number of visitors in recent years. The site has long been a popular tourist attraction, but the sheer weight of numbers has caused increasing problems at the site as visitor numbers rose from under 2.7 million in 2014 to more than 3.9 million by 2019. “Grande Pompei,” as the project is called, is a “parco diffuso” or scattered archaeological park, incorporating the archaeological area of Pompeii itself, as well as villas at nearby Boscoreale, Oplontis (in the modern town of Torre Annunziata) and Stabiae, at modern Castellammare di Stabia.

And, should anyone accuse cast members of being insincere or secret critics of Trump's, they quickly began throwing people under the bus. "Mr. Trump, your honor," he said, "we know that you say things that are controversial sometimes, but really you're just speaking the truth. “But seriously, I run the country now.”The cast addressed what many pundits have said was the key demographic in the 2024 presidential election: young men who feel unseen.
