Making a discernible, measurable difference to my wild neighbors is an act of resistance, too. To create a microhabitat that sustains your own wild neighbors, you’ll need to grow the endemic flowers and shrubs and trees they evolved alongside. I know, White House-wise, you’ve got a lot of more pressing things to worry about right now. But this is the holiday season — you deserve a chance to think about a happy tomorrow. When Hillary Clinton lost to Donald Trump, I consoled myself by pointing out, about 20 times a day, that she won the popular vote. No such luck this time around: Kamala Harris got creamed. Just before the election, I happily wrote a column celebrating “how relatively normal” the nomination of Kamala Harris seemed.

UNFCCC Executive Secretary Simon Stiell speaks in the early hours at the conclusion of the UNFCCC COP29 Climate Conference on November 24, 2024 in Baku, Azerbaijan. Ambitious climate action often requires ambitious financing — be it a clean energy transition project or helping developing countries mitigate the effects of natural disasters. Nearly 50,000 people from 200 countries — including, for the first time, the Taliban rulers of Afghanistan — were in Azerbaijan for this year's United Nations Climate Change Conference, with the goal of reaching a critical deal on climate finance. Some of the highest human costs will be paid by smaller nations that are disproportionately affected by climate change, including Pacific Island nations whose existence is threatened by rising seas. But with COP29 weighed down by geopolitics and domestic turmoil, some were reluctant to attend at all.

Oil prices retreated on Monday following 6% gains last week, but remained near two-week highs as geopolitical tensions grew between Western powers and major oil producers Russia and Iran, raising risks of supply disruption. "Oil prices are starting the new week with some slight cool-off as market participants await more cues from geopolitical developments and the Fed's policy outlook to set the tone," said Yeap Jun Rong, market strategist at IG. "Tensions between Ukraine and Russia have edged up a notch lately, leading to some pricing for the risks of a wider escalation potentially impacting oil supplies." Enforced sanctions could sideline about 1 million barrels per day of Iran's oil exports, about 1% of global oil supply, he said. Investors were also focused on rising crude oil demand at China and India, the world's top and third-largest importers, respectively.

The Israeli military said it had struck several command centers belonging to Hezbollah, the Lebanese militia, south of Beirut on Monday morning. Israeli officials said at least some were intercepted by Israeli missiles. Israeli officials said Hezbollah had fired at least 250 projectiles, a term it often uses for rockets, into Israel on Sunday, including many toward Tel Aviv, with some causing injuries. Analysts have said the intense attacks suggest that both Israel and Hezbollah are trying to maximize their leverage as diplomats conduct what they hope is a final round of cease-fire talks. Italian lender UniCredit on Monday offered to snap up its domestic rival Banco BPM for roughly 10 billion euros ($10.5 billion) in a move it says is separate from its pursuit of German bank Commerzbank . UniCredit said in a statement early Monday that it is offering 6.657 euros for each share — a slight premium on Friday's close price of 6.644 euros. UniCredit said the purchase, which would be an all-stock deal, would allow the bank to "further strengthen its role as a leading pan-European banking group." Monday's news follows a flurry of merger and acquisition announcements in the European banking sector this year. The industry has been considered ripe for consolidation for years, with cash-rich UniCredit often cited as a possible acquirer.
