As far as campaign slogans go, President Biden’s oft-repeated phrase “Finish the job” isn’t exactly galvanizing. “Finish the job” is a patient gardener determinedly clipping away at that final hedge. The domestic and global situation Biden inherited from the Trump administration has changed radically, with significant economic, technological, environmental and global political developments that are only accelerating. Biden continues to say “We need to do more,” but what he hasn’t said is more what. I’m used to Donald Trump being painfully loud, proudly obnoxious and, well, sort of bonkers. I’m used to alligators-on-the-border Trump, sharks-in-the-water Trump, Hannibal Lecter Trump. And this loosely hinged version of Trump scares me much, much more than the utterly unhinged one. He smells victory in November in a way he’s never really smelled it before, and his nose isn’t off. Trump’s obvious posturing toward the center was evident on Monday, when the Republican National Committee’s platform committee approved a draft that included language apparently moderating the GOP stance on abortion and same-sex marriageJill Filipovic. That decision has proven disastrous on many levels— especially for women in Republican-run states who continue to suffer the consequences. If leaving abortion to the states was the plan, why have Republicans pushed for national bans in Congress? CNN —In the first week of a new Trump administration, President Joe Biden’s climate wins would get put through the shredder. “He has said he’s going to come back with a vengeance,” former US special climate envoy John Kerry told CNN. He has railed against Biden’s climate policies at rallies and derided clean energy, vowing to push America back to fossil fuels. He has openly courted the oil industry at fundraising events, the Washington Post reported, promising regulation rollbacks in exchange for campaign cash. It could happen “very fast,” said David Bernhardt, who served as Interior Secretary in the Trump administration.

In a recent television interview, Trump said he was considering restricting access to birth control and leaving the decision to the states. Taking to social media, Trump falsely claimed that neither he nor the Republican Party supported imposing restrictions on or banning birth control. The plans call for again attacking birth control through executive action, including threatening access to IUDs and emergency contraception. In Arizona, GOP Senate Majority Leader Sonny Borrelli absurdly suggested that women could simply hold “an aspirin between their knees” as birth control. In Iowa, legislation falsely conflated birth control with abortion to block the approval of over-the-counter birth control pills.

“I believe he’ll be a pro-life president in the future also.”Many senior Trump administration alumni and allies are now mapping out and drafting policy options for a second Trump term. A second Trump term would also put back in place and expand restrictions on Title X grants – federal funds for public and nonprofit groups that provide family planning. Resurrecting these actions in a second Trump would almost entirely be up to the discretion of whomever he appoints to lead the relevant federal agencies. With Roe v. Wade’s protections erased, anti-abortion activists would like a second Trump administration to push harder than it did before – especially in restricting access to mifepristone. Abortion rights advocates worry he could play an outsize role shaping abortion restrictions in a potential second Trump administration.
