USS New JerseyAn aerial port bow view of the battleship USS New Jersey launching an RGM-84 Harpoon missile on the Pacific Missile Test Center Range. Nicknamed "Big J," the New Jersey served in World War II, the Korean War, and the Vietnam War, during which it was the only battleship to be reactivated. The warship was decommissioned for the last time in 1991, entering the reserve fleet while the details of converting it into a museum ship were being ironed out. In 1999, Congress allowed Big J, under the management of nonprofit Home Port Alliance, to be turned into a museum ship. Since 2000, Big J has been moored across the channel from USS Olympia, but the museum ship is back on the move for the first time in decades.

After treatment with targeted deep brain stimulation, she hopes to walk out soon and, for the first time in her adult life, live independently, in her own apartment. Doctors used a tube that led into her stomach through her nose to give her food and gave her fluids intravenously. Deep brain stimulation for severe obsessive-compulsive disorder helped Julia Hum earn her high-school equivalency certificate last year. Refining deep brain stimulationHum had a deep brain stimulator implanted in 2021. Deep brain stimulation can be life-changing, but it doesn’t work equally well for everyone, and researchers say they’re getting closer to understanding why.

Retail sales rebounded in February amid higher gas prices

Retail sales at stores, online and in restaurants rose 0.6% in February from the prior month, up from January’s revised 1.1% decline, the Commerce Department reported Thursday. The broader US economy remains on strong footing, with employers continuing to hire and Americans still raking in strong wage gains. Sales were up across most categories last month, rising the most at home improvement stores, by a solid 2.2%. In February, car sales climbed 1.8%, purchases of electronics and appliances increased 1.5% and sales at restaurants rose 0.4%. Spending is heavily influenced by the state of the labor market, which remains solid.

It's still not easy for me to admit it, but that night I used my pain to feed my professional ambition. In a previous job, burnout nearly killed me, and I vowed to never let ambition swallow me again. There's a fine line between the motivation needed to build a successful career and the uncontrolled ambition that ends in burnout. As I unpacked this predicament in therapy, I began to wonder: How did ambition become such a force in our world? In the ancient world, ambition was seen as a curse.

CNN —“The Zone of Interest,” Jonathan Glazer’s Oscar-nominated historical drama, is technically a film about the Holocaust. “I knew right from the off that I didn’t want to reenact these atrocities using actors and extras,” director Glazer told CNN’s Christiane Amanpour in a February interview. “In other words, it’s out of sight but never out of mind,” Glazer told Amanpour. “No matter how good an actor is, faking the pain of a severe injury, of fatality, is a very hard thing,” Burn told IndieWire. The S & P 500 hit a fresh intraday record on Friday, building on what was a stellar February for Wall Street. But some stocks on Wall Street may be getting ahead of themselves, while others that have been under pressure could reverse course. Using our stock screener tool, CNBC Pro searched for the most overbought and oversold stocks on Wall Street, measured by their 14-day relative strength index (RSI). Stocks with a 14-day RSI above 70 are thought to be overbought, indicating that shares could soon experience a downturn. CNN —The dominant perception of early photography from West Africa is that it was taken through a colonizing lens. These are questions asked by a new book that seeks to re-examine the history of photography in the region. Her book demonstrates that gap was short, and history has been obscured in a way that has disenfranchised many Africans. Unlike some other West African nations, Senegal has no recorded history of portraiture before photography, Paoletti said. Get ready for a more volatile Dow with the Amazon addition
  + stars: | 2024-02-26 | by ( Robert Hum | ) www.cnbc.com   time to read: +1 min
Will a more volatile Dow Jones Industrial average follow suit after Amazon's addition? Amazon joins the Dow Monday, as the 127-year old index adds a much higher-beta stock that could bring some bigger moves with more frequency going forward. Remember, that for every $1 any Dow stock moves, the index moves roughly 6.5 points. But contrast Amazon's moves to even Walmart, which had essentially the same share price pre-split as Amazon (WMT $175.56, AMZN $174.99). Apple had a share price of about $127 when it was added in March 2015 (price based on pre-2020 4-for-1 split levels).

Investors, including hedge funds, hurtled term sheets at founders to beat the competition, skipping the usual diligence along the way. Flush with cash, the partners are seeing a flood of hyper-growth startups come to market for funding after a two-year dry spell. The funding blockage is also softening as valuations come back to earth, Costolo said. Walgreens has the dubious distinction of being one of the stocks that has had the shortest duration in the Dow Jones Industrial Average. At $22, Walgreens has the lowest stock price in the index, which traditionally would make it a target for replacement. "Since the indexes are price weighted, the Index Committee evaluates stock price when considering a company for inclusion. Right now, the highest priced stock, UnitedHealth Group , is more than 23 times the value of the lowest priced stock, Walgreens. Broadway’s Crunchtime Is Also Its Best Life

Broadway is the pinnacle of the commercial theater, a billion-dollar cultural enterprise and a jewel of New York City. So why is it run like a Christmas tree farm? I don’t mean that it invites too much tinsel. I mean that it operates at a very low hum for 10 months of the year and then goes into a two-month frenzy of product dumping. From a business standpoint, this is obviously unwise.

There are growing signs that commercial real estate is in serious trouble. The project, dubbed Metamorphosis, focuses on transforming what otherwise might be discarded into something of value to society: rotten wood into fine instruments, inmates into craftsmen, all under the principle of rehabilitation. Two inmates were granted leave to see the concert featuring 14 prison-made stringed instruments playing a program that included works by Bach and Vivaldi. Other inmates, like Nikolae, who joined Lamponi at La Scala, are permitted more latitude. His own rocky journey to a new country has given him an understanding of the desperation that drove migrants onto unseaworthy boats. Originally, the boats were being transformed into crucifixes and nativity scenes, but the inmates who were already trained luthiers thought: why not instruments?

MUSKOGEE, Okla. (AP) — The hallways of Bacone College are cold and dark. In the college’s historic buildings, there are leaks to plug, mold to purge and priceless works of Native American art to save from ruin. Founded in 1880 as a Baptist missionary college focused on assimilation, Bacone College transformed into an Indigenous-led institution that provided an intertribal community, as well as a degree. Across the country, there are only a few dozen tribal colleges, according to the American Indian College Fund, a nonprofit that supports Native American access to higher education. Tribal colleges must be sponsored by a federally recognized tribe and have a majority Native student enrollment.

The latest jobs data shows that America's job market remains shockingly robust in the face of the highest interest rates in 23 years. And the January report could have finally quelled Wall Street's belief that the Federal Reserve could start to cut interest rates as soon as March, according to futures. About a month ago, the odds of a March cut were north of 75%, but as of Friday morning, they were at 19.5%. The Fed's March 19-20 meeting is still several weeks away and many economic reports are due by then, but investors finally seem to be coming to grip with what Fed officials have been communicating all along. The January jobs report shows that demand is expected to remain solid, with Americans employed and enjoying strong wage growth.

Here's how big of a surprise corporate profits have been this earnings season: the fourth-quarter is now shaping up to be the best of 2023. Despite ongoing macroeconomic concerns that have hampered demand and weighed on consumer sentiment, almost halfway into earnings season, profits are clearly coming in far better than anybody expected. Helping companies' bottom lines this round: easing input costs; more emphasis on cost controls and efficiencies; and significantly reduced expectations. LSEG, formerly Refinitiv, is now seeing a nearly 8% rise in earnings growth this season.

Their huge and growing earnings, combined with a large number of shares outstanding, mean that the three companies exert a bigger influence on the S & P 500 earnings picture than any other. Fourth quarter earnings for the entire S & P 500 are expected to rise about 5% over the same period in 2022. For share-weighted earnings, the earnings (or earnings estimates) for each company are multiplied by the shares outstanding. What this means is that companies that are experiencing a rapid increase in their earnings can begin to exert an outsized influence on S & P 500 earnings. In a world where the S & P 500 is expected to see earnings growth of 10% this year, Nvidia's earnings growth is off the charts.

The declines have come from just about every sector, with the exception of technology, which has seen its earnings estimates rise since October 1. A good example: IBM , which beat earnings expectations and highlighted an uptick in demand for artificial intelligence products and services. Outside of technology, earnings expectations are lower than three months ago, but are now rising again. "The market has been anticipating improving earnings expectations, and it's getting them. By that I do not mean that earnings estimates are rising, I mean they are not getting cut as much anymore," Raich added.

If there’s a better scent in the world than Marcella Hazan’s Bolognese sauce (above), I’m unaware of it. Well, apart from fresh-baked apple pie, that is. And wooden boats, spit-roasted lamb, fresh-cut hay and Jamaican black cake. But Bolognese is pretty great: that milk-calmed tomato over a bass line of beef, with a whisper of nutmeg warmth and a low hum of buttery onion. It’s just the thing for a Sunday afternoon of winter cooking, grandma-style, in advance of a family dinner.
