So if it’s not hard time in the joint, what kind of sentence could she get?”His guest was Herbert Hoelter, a sentencing reform advocate who, to fund his nonprofit work at the National Center on Institutions and Alternatives, had become a concierge to the federal prison system for white-collar criminals, helping them to secure alternative or shorter sentences and to navigate life as an inmate. “Our philosophy isn’t that punishment should not occur,” Mr. Hoelter said, “it’s that it should occur in different ways.”

Presidents and former presidents are members of one of the most intimate clubs on earth, and they have almost always described political violence, especially attacks on one of their own, as unnatural exceptions to an otherwise peaceful polity.

In the Times/Siena poll after the debate, those margins grew to six percentage points with likely voters and nine percentage points with registered voters. While there was a loss of about 2.7 million jobs from the beginning of Trump’s four-year term to the end, there was a gain of about 6.7 million jobs until the Covid-19 pandemic hit the country about three years into that term. Entities like the Kemp Commission and Steve Forbes have commonly called to replace the income tax with a flat tax. Trump's proposal brings a new wrinkle to the movement, as it would replace the income tax with a levy on all imported goods. Simple math would suggest that the government may need to impose a 65% tax on all imported goods and services to raise the needed $2.5 trillion.
