(Jack Guez/Agence France-Presse/Getty Images)The Gaza Strip is a sliver of land bordering Israel and Egypt that is around the size of Washington D.C. with a population about three times the size. It is part of the area that, together with the West Bank, makes up the Palestinian territories. Its population of over two million is largely made up of Palestinians living in one of the most densely packed pieces of land in the world.

In response to the attack, Israel launched “Operation Swords of Iron,” striking a number of targets in the Gaza strip. After Hamas seized control of Gaza, Israel and Egypt imposed a strict siege on the territory, which is ongoing. Before Saturday’s operation, the last war between Hamas and Israel was in 2021, which lasted for 11 days and killed at least 250 people in Gaza and 13 in Israel. A key driver of economic growth in Israel, the tech sector saw its funding hit last year by the global economic slowdown. "The big inventors are the warriors of democracy," Margalit told Reuters on the sidelines of a JVP Climate Tech conference. While the tech sector needs a stable Israeli economy, the economy needs a strong tech sector, which accounts for 14% of jobs and almost a fifth of gross domestic product. The fall off in tech funding has been a major factor in the weakening of the shekel , analysts say.

The al Quds Brigades of Islamic Jihad said in a statement shortly after the rocket fire: “The launching towards Jerusalem is a message, and everyone should understand its purpose. Talks to bring about a ceasefire between Israel and Islamic Jihad in Gaza are “on ice right now,” a diplomatic source familiar with the negotiations told CNN Friday. One command center was used by senior Islamic Jihad operative Muhammad Abu Al Ata for “the planning and command of terrorist activity against Israel,” the IDF said. The Israel Defense Forces said that IDF fighter jets also struck four military posts belonging to Islamic Jihad. ‘Shield and Arrow’The IDF began unleashing waves of airstrikes on Tuesday on what it says are Islamic Jihad operatives and infrastructure along the strip.
“I just don’t remember anything after that,” Maroulis tells CNN Sport about her admission, adding that she was released a few days later. And then when I got the concussions, it felt like a lot of that flooded back,” she says. “My relationship with wrestling felt so damaged and broken,” she adds. Sarah Stier/Getty ImagesMore support needs to be given to young athletes experiencing concussion, Maroulis believes, particularly when some might delay seeking support for fear of seeming weak. Pushing through because you don’t want them to think you’re weak is the worst thing you can do,” Maroulis says.
Israel, a major US partner, has not provided direct military aid to Ukraine. Russia allows Israel to conduct operations targeting Iran-linked forces in Syria, something it doesn't want to jeopardize. Israel, as of February 2022, was the largest cumulative recipient of US foreign assistance — most of which comes in the form of military support. But the country has stopped short of providing direct lethal military aid to Ukraine, despite pleas from leadership in Kyiv. Even as Moscow allows Israel to clamp down on Iranian influence in Syria, Russia and Iran have increased their military ties and support throughout the Ukraine war.

JERUSALEM, Jan 26 (Reuters) - An Israeli venture capital fund and a local startup are moving their bank accounts out of Israel, they said on Thursday, as opposition mounts against government plans to overhaul the country's judicial system. This is a painful but necessary business step," said Guez, a vocal critic of the government's judicial plans. Barnoach told the Calcalist financial daily that the reforms are like a "legal coup" that could lead to economic instability. He said his foreign investors are worried and they may not continue to invest in Israel if the reforms pass. An S&P Global Ratings analyst this month told Reuters that Israel's judicial reforms plan could pressure the country's sovereign credit rating.
The Atlas Lions made history as the first African team to reach a World Cup semifinal. They made history as the first all-female refereeing crew for a men's World Cup match. It was Morocco's first World Cup win since 1998 — and its third-ever at the tournament. Less spoken about is that they also rate better on television than the men do in the World Cup. We’ll just have to wait and see, though with the US, Canada and Mexico hosting the 2026 World Cup, soccer isn’t going away anytime soon.
Ahmad Bin Ali Stadium, Al Rayyan, Qatar CNN —Canada was taught a tough lesson as it lost 1-0 to Belgium in its first World Cup match for 36 years on Wednesday. Despite all its dominance, Canada couldn’t get the goal it so richly deserved and had the frustration of seeing Alphonso Davies’ penalty saved by Belgian keeper Thibaut Courtois in the first half. Belgium reached the World Cup semifinals in 2018 and the European team made Canada pay for their wastefulness. Jack Guez/AFP/Getty ImagesThe entire Canada squad huddled in the middle of the pitch after the match as Belgium’s players celebrated with their fans. Despite the defeat, Canada looked like a team that belonged on the world stage and it can be proud of giving the world’s second-ranked team a real fright.
