Rocket Lab CEO Peter Beck is perfectly content watching the rockets his company builds reach the heavens while his feet remain firmly planted on Earth. I just have a burning desire to create things to enable others to go to space," says Beck, 47. The native New Zealander launched Rocket Lab in 2006 with no college degree or space industry connections. But Beck insists he's not interested, citing one of the very traits that helped him successfully build his company: "a healthy degree of paranoia." He has "so much respect" for astronauts, particularly those with engineering backgrounds, who understand the danger of space travel and do it anyway, he says.

A federal judge in North Dakota blocked a Biden administration rule that allowed DACA recipients to sign up for health insurance through the Affordable Care Act. People who received benefits from DACA, the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals program, began signing up for coverage under the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, at the start of open enrollment on Nov. 1. Coverage for those who signed up was expected to start as early as Jan. 1. Still, the elimination of expanded coverage, Pillai said, could leave thousands of uninsured DACA recipients in those states without an affordable option. “Given that President-elect Trump tried to end DACA during his first term and his views on immigration more broadly, the Trump administration seems unlikely to appeal any ruling against DACA or the coverage expansion,” Pillai said.

Russia is providing sanctuary to Bashar al-Assad, having transported the former Syrian leader there “in the most secure way possible” after the swift collapse of his regime, Russia’s deputy foreign minister told NBC News in an exclusive interview Tuesday. “Russia is not a party to the convention that established the International Criminal Court,” Ryabkov said when asked if the Kremlin would hand over Assad for trial. Separately, in March 2023, the court issued an arrest warrant for Putin for “war crimes” in overseeing the unlawful abduction and deportation of children from Ukraine to Russia. And last month, the ICC issued arrest warrants for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and his former Defense Minister Yoav Gallant over alleged crimes against humanity and war crimes in Gaza. Israel, Ryabkov said, should observe that agreement and it should “not infringe” on Syria’s territorial integrity.

WASHINGTON — The Supreme Court on Tuesday will weigh the fate of an 88-mile railroad project that would transport crude oil in Utah as the justices consider a dispute over whether federal officials conducted a stringent enough environmental review before approving it. It is opposed by Eagle County, Colorado, which claims that it will suffer from downstream effects of the railroad, as well as environmental groups. The federal entity overseeing approval of the project, the Surface Transportation Board (STB), conducted an environmental review and subsequently gave it the green light to commence. The Biden administration has backed the coalition at the Supreme Court in arguing that the STB's review was sufficient. Lawyers for Eagle County said in court papers that the appeals court correctly concluded that the STB had not done a full analysis.

Hong Kong CNN —Chinese leader Xi Jinping has warned the United States against restarting a trade war, saying there would be “no winners” even as he vowed to defend the country’s economic interests. “Tariff wars, trade wars, and technology wars go against the historical trend and economic laws, and there will be no winners,” Xi said according to state broadcaster CCTV. China has always believed that only when China is good can the world be good. “We doubt this marks an end to China’s recent export boom,” Zichun Huang of Capital Economics wrote in a research note. “It is likely that China would continue to improve trade relations through lower export tax rebate and clearer rules including government procurement,” Citi economists wrote on Monday.

The case for Donald Trump’s tariffs
  + stars: | 2024-12-10 | by ( Matt Egan | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +9 min
Moore, who used to unabashedly favor free trade, said Trump convinced him that tariffs can be used as a negotiating tool. Trump’s recent threat to impose a 25% tariff on all imports from Canada got the immediate attention of Ottawa. It’s possible that Trump 2.0 uses tariffs, or at least the threat that he’ll impose tariffs, to get Mexico, Canada, China or other countries to address legitimate issues such as drug trafficking. Even Moore conceded that using tariffs to threaten BRICS nations is a “very, very flawed strategy” by Trump. During Trump’s first term, everything from US autos and soybeans to whiskey were targeted with retaliatory tariffs.

The Microsoft-backed artificial intelligence startup, which burst into the mainstream last year thanks to the viral popularity of ChatGPT, introduced Sora in February. OpenAI said users don't need to pay extra for the tool, which will be included in existing ChatGPT accounts such as Plus and Pro.
