House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, facing growing pressure from the right flank of his conference, announced on Tuesday he is directing committee leaders to open an impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden, citing a “culture of corruption” around the chief executive. “Today, I am directing our House committee to open a formal impeachment inquiry into President Joe Biden,” McCarthy said at a press conference. But until now, the inquiry was not guaranteed, especially as it remained unclear whether vulnerable Republicans in swing districts that Biden won in the last election would vote to open the impeachment inquiry into the president. The House returns this week from a lengthy August recess to a jam-packed September, with an end-of-month deadline to avert a government shutdown quickly approaching, foisting intense pressure upon House Speaker Kevin McCarthy. With just one of 12 spending bills passed through the House, little time remains to take action to keep the government fully functional by the Sept. 30 deadline. And should McCarthy look to Democrats to sidestep conservative demands, some have warned that they’ll bring up a vote for his ouster. While the idea of using the 14th Amendment to keep Trump out of the White House has been bandied about by lawyers and political figures, the Colorado action is the first lawsuit demanding that a state disqualify Trump from the ballot, CREW said. The group chose Colorado because the laws there make it easier to get it before a court, he says. Some members of Congress, most recently Democratic Sen. Tim Kaine of Virginia and Democratic Rep. Adam Schiff of California, have suggested the 14th Amendment might apply to Trump. Critics of the movement to disqualify Trump say the 14th Amendment clause was written to apply to former Confederates and should not be used against contemporary would-be candidates. Still, those who want to use the 14th Amendment to disqualify Trump face significant legal hurdles, experts say, adding that the matter is likely to end up in the Supreme Court if the movement gains steam.
