Investors who take the risk of owning certain unloved stocks could see outperformance down the road, according to Goldman Sachs. This basket of stocks consists of buy-rated names on which the firm's analysts are out of line with the rest of Wall Street. Here are a few of Goldman's differentiated buy names. About a quarter of analysts covering the stock have given it a buy or strong buy rating, according to LSEG. The pet retailer has buy or strong buy ratings from about one-third of Wall Street analysts covering the name, per LSEG.

Why are prices still so high? Corporate greed, some say.
  + stars: | 2024-03-11 | by ( Tami Luhby | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
While supply chain problems and high demand may have helped spur inflation early in the pandemic, Rosolino believes there’s another key reason why prices have soared and remained high: Corporate greed. It’s corporate greed.”Nick Rosolino feels businesses won't lower their prices as long as consumers keep spending. “Too many corporations raise prices to pad their profits, charging more and more for less and less,” Biden said. Companies are typically slower to reduce their prices when costs decline than they are to raise prices when their expenses jump. Corporate profits have contributed to inflation, though experts differ on the extent.

That added to the massive debt burdens already placed on the hospitals by their for-profit owners, deepening their financial woes. In January, MPT reported that its biggest tenant, a nationwide chain of 32 hospitals called Steward, could no longer pay its rent. The core idea was simple: to buy hospital real estate, pocket the lease payments, and use the money to reward investors. The more hospital real estate that MPT buys, the more money it makes in rent payments from the hospitals. But that doesn't mean that MPT's leaders didn't get rich off its hospital deals.

Musk, who co-founded OpenAI in 2015, has since left and has formed his own AI company, xAI. Musk is asking for a jury trial and for the company, Altman and co-founder Greg Brockman to pay back the profit they received from the business. But Altman, Brockman and Chief Scientist Ilya Sutskever in 2019 formed OpenAI LP, a for-profit entity that exists within the larger company’s structure. Musk’s complaint said that company and its partnership with Microsoft violated OpenAI’s charter, representing a breach of contract. “Where some like Mr. Musk see an existential threat in AGI, others see AGI as a source of profit and power,” the complaint stated.

Big names boosting dividends as of late include Walmart , which hiked its annual payment by 9% to 83 cents a share. Meta Platforms made headlines earlier this month when it announced it would issue its first-ever quarterly dividend – a payout of 50 cents per share. Government spending, including the CHIPS Act and the infrastructure legislation known as the Inflation Reduction Act , and the upcoming presidential election are also key considerations for companies, Silverblatt added. Dividend growth names, for instance, might offer you lower yields in the present, but you have the prospect of higher future payouts. "You need to know the fund, what they invest in and what the restrictions are," Silverblatt said.

Happy New Year of the Dragon - or Loong?
  + stars: | 2024-02-16 | by ( Chris Lau | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +7 min
This year, it’s the Year of the Dragon, or more accurately, the “Year of the Loong,” says Chinese state media, using its preferred term for the mythical beast. The Chinese “loong” conjures positivity, nobleness and fortune and therefore should be distinguished linguistically from its Western cousin, state media argues. Chinese media has dedicated coverage and airtime to promote the new nomenclature over the past week or so, though both “dragon” and “loong” are being used interchangeably in English-language reports. “Transcribing long into English ‘loong’ would cause more problems and confusion than translating it as ‘dragon’,” he wrote. He noted that “some patriotic and political sources in the Sinosphere” have been peddling the concept that the Western dragon is fearful.

The "Volmageddon" episode happened six years ago after traders piled into a bunch of ETFs that were designed to return the inverse of market volatility (essentially betting on a calm market). And when volatility went up in February 2018, it tanked those strategies, sending the S&P 500 down more than 10% in two weeks. As VIX futures expire, the S&P 500 is seeing stronger price reactions. The short-volatility trade became very popular after 2010 when volatility was low, and traders could make money betting against market turbulence. AdvertisementIt's not a major concern right away as volatility upticks have been small, and the S&P 500 has remained resilient.

They expose decades of American corporate philosophy gone awry. A good American company isn’t just a vehicle for financial returns; it is first and foremost an employer, a contributor to economic and/or technological innovation, and a source of US power. But it’s clear that what Boeing — and the entire American corporate body politic — needs is nothing short of a philosophical counterrevolution. Over these three decades of plenty for Boeing’s shareholders, the company’s staff was asked to penny-pinch. Boeing’s stock cratered, and France’s Airbus , a rival once colloquially known as “Scare Bus,” started to eat the American company’s lunch .

CNBC's Jim Cramer on Thursday said the market's had a significant run, and it may be time to ring the register. Cramer reflected on the CNBC Investing Club's decision to sell all of the Charitable Trust's shares of Caterpillar . So now you start compounding the implications on life sciences, and biosciences and it gets really, really exciting. I will say this, I don't think that it is currently popular to espouse an overwhelmingly positive sentiment, because I think it is seen as naive. I think we are so wrapped up in the Terminator Skynet idea, and I just don't think that's even remotely interesting given what we think we're building. I point to nuclear as the best example of how one policy, especially influenced by public perception, can have a really, really incredible consequence on the human experience.
