REUTERS/Shannon Stapleton/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsOTTAWA, Oct 12 (Reuters) - A Canadian news industry body on Thursday lent support to some of Google's concerns about a new law that aims to make large internet companies share advertising revenue with news publishers in the country. Canada tried addressing tech companies' concerns about the law in draft rules released in September, but Google and Meta Platforms META.O were not convinced. "We are aligned that there should be a firm ceiling, rather than a floor on financial liability," Deegan said in the statement. "We will continue to engage those with questions or concerns, including tech giants," Heritage Minister Pascale St-Onge said in a statement, adding that Ottawa will be reviewing submissions received during public consultation for the draft rules.

REUTERS/Olivia Harris/ File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsOct 11 (Reuters) - Goldman Sachs Group (GS.N) is suing Malaysia in a UK court, a source familiar with the matter told Reuters, as tensions escalate over a settlement linked to its role in the 1MDB investment-fund scandal. The arbitration has been filed with the London Court of International Arbitration (LCIA), the source said. In 2020, Goldman Sachs had agreed to pay $3.9 billion to settle Malaysia's criminal probe over the U.S. investment bank's role in the multibillion-dollar 1MDB scandal. Two women walk next to the Reserve Bank of Australia headquarters in central Sydney, Australia February 6, 2018. In an effort to curb surging inflation, the central bank has lifted interest rates to a decade-high of 4.1%, causing widespread financial stress among households where debt levels are at record peaks. "A small, but rising share of borrowers are on the cusp, or in the early stages, of financial stress," the review stated. "A tightening in global financial conditions could transmit to Australia via linkages in funding markets and risk aversion," the review said. But in first-primary state New Hampshire, Trump sits in the campaign driver's seat, with nearly half of Granite State GOP primary voters saying the former president is their first pick for the 2024 presidential nomination. Nikki Haley, who served as Trump's ambassador to the United Nations, came in second with 19% support – the highest level she has attained in New Hampshire primary polls. The survey found that voters were not very willing to shift to other candidates at this point, months before the yet-unscheduled New Hampshire primary. But the Suffolk poll indicates that Trump's legal woes have not deterred his base. "Add in second-choice votes from all the other major candidates – even if they all endorsed Haley – and Trump sits above 55%," Paleologos said.

By David Shepardson and Alexandra AlperWASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. President Joe Biden's administration on Monday imposed new trade restrictions on 11 Chinese and five Russian companies, accusing some of supplying components to make drones for Russia's war effort in Ukraine. The Commerce Department, which oversees export policy, added a total of 28 firms, including some Finnish and German companies, to a trade blacklist, making it harder for U.S. suppliers to ship them technology. The investigation found that Hong Kong-based exporter Asia Pacific Links Ltd. has been among the most important suppliers to Russia's drone program. The firm, along with import company SMT iLogic, were the target of an earlier round of U.S. sanctions in May. The United States has aggressively used a trade blacklist known as the entity list to target China's tech sector and attempt to stymie Russia's war in Ukraine.

Opinion: Trudeau’s fumble on India

CNN —It is hard to imagine any world leader wanting to share the foreign policy swamp in which the beleaguered Canadian Prime Minister, Justin Trudeau, currently finds himself. Nijjar led a group pushing for the creation of an independent Sikh homeland in northern India called Khalistan. The Biden administration can’t be blamed for prioritizing its ongoing bromance with India and Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the bilateral relationship with Ottawa. A cynic might say that prematurely publicizing the explosive findings against India is a diversion tactic to steer attention away from the China interference file and the domestic issues piling up. Or that it is simply amateur hour at the offices of the prime minister and foreign affairs.

But none have stepped up to condemn India for its alleged involvement in the June slaying on Canadian soil of a Sikh separatist, Hardeep Singh Nijjar. All that makes it hard for Canada's main allies — which are also some of India's main partners — to loudly speak out. The government’s allegations are particularly awkward now for the U.K., which is seeking a free trade deal with India. In 2018, for example, China-Canada relations nosedived after China detained former Canadian diplomat Michael Kovrig and Canadian entrepreneur Michael Spavor. Now the stakes are higher, and it's unclear — at least publicly — who Canada can count on for full-throated support.

Brighter data from China meanwhile has helped lift sentiment across global markets, except for China, heading into the weekend. While Japan's Nikkei (.N225) rose 1% and European shares opened higher (.STOXX), China shares reversed earlier gains (.CSI300). European markets continued to cheer the likely end of the European Central Bank's rate hiking cycle. And even if the ECB suggested rates would stay higher for longer, markets are already looking past that to rate cuts as economic growth weakens. BlackRock allows many clients to cast their own votes at companies' annual general meetings. The page also showed BlackRock did not back a shareholder resolution seeking more disclosure on progress in scaling back thermal coal production, which got 29% support, without saying why. Nothing like it had ever happened before — these wildfires began far earlier and spread far faster than usual, and they have burned far more boreal forest than any fire in Canada’s modern history. As of this writing, 5,881 wildfires have consumed 15.3 million hectares, about 59,000 square miles, dwarfing the 10-year average of 2.6 million hectares per summer. With the melting Arctic to their north and the immensity of their northern wilderness, Canadians are not strangers to climate anxiety. “Temperatures are rising at the rate we thought they would, but the effects are more severe, more frequent, more critical.
