Financial transactions around the world were affected by a tech outage on Friday, hampering operations as workers at several firms struggled to log into their corporate systems. Employees at companies including JPMorgan Chase and Instinet, a brokerage firm owned by the Japanese bank Nomura, have had trouble gaining access to their work stations, according to people with knowledge of the matter who spoke on condition of anonymity. That has led to delays in some trades, though the companies have been working on workarounds, the people said. The London Stock Exchange said that its RNS corporate news service was unable to publish, citing a “third-party global technical issue” that it was investigating. The exchange operator added that the matter was not affecting securities trading and other services.

For millions of people, the global technology outage on Friday was a source of distress. But for a small group of corporate workers, the global outage brought a welcome kind of chaos: a snow day in the middle of July. Some workers affected by the outage shared images of their computers on social media captioned “happy international blue screen day,” referencing the error messages that overtook screens during the outage. On TikTok, users posted about clocking in only to find “the blue screen of death” (or hoping they would, for an extra day off). JPMorgan, Bank of America and BlackRock were among the large financial firms affected.

Across the world, critical businesses and services including airlines, hospitals, train networks and TV stations, are being disrupted by a global tech outage affecting Microsoft users. In many countries, flights have been grounded, workers couldn’t access their systems and, in some cases, customers haven’t been able to make card payments in stores. A series outages rippled across the globe as information displays, login systems and broadcasting networks went dark. The problem affecting the majority of services was caused by a flawed update by CrowdStrike, an American cybersecurity firm, whose systems are designed to protect users from hackers. Microsoft said on Friday that it was aware of an issue affecting machines running “CrowdStrike Falcon.”

The rise of the internet and of Yahoo pushed SoftBank's stock to a peak closing price of 10,111.1 yen on Feb. 18, 2000. After lingering near then-record highs in March 2021, SoftBank's stock fell sharply, alongside other global tech stocks. "Softbank Vision Fund had to write down various investments due to a combination of equity values declining and a tougher private financing environment. Dan Baker, senior equity analyst at Morningstar, said a lot of SoftBank's price appreciation comes down to Arm. For Goldman Sachs' investment bankers, the answer may just be over the horizon. Top Goldman executives told Business Insider that the investment bank is poised to roll out a series of generative AI tools to its workforce as soon as next year. Lee, a Goldman partner, said it could take years for the consequences of this tech on the bank's workflows to be fully understood. But he is overall optimistic about how generative AI, an advanced type of machine learning, will impact its workforce. Many junior bankers spend time on tasks that can sometimes feel "relatively routine," Lee said.

BEIJING — China's ByteDance is working with U.S. chip designer Broadcom on developing an advanced AI processor, two sources familiar with the matter told Reuters, a move that would help TikTok's owner secure sufficient supply of high-end chips amid U.S.-Sino tensions. Securing AI chips is crucial for ByteDance to make its algorithms more powerful. To support its AI push, ByteDance has stockpiled Nvidia chips, according to a separate person who was briefed on the matter. Bytedance currently has hundreds of semiconductor-related job openings posted, including 15 for ASIC chip designers, according to checks of its website. It has also been poaching top people from other Chinese AI chip firms, according to one of the sources who has direct knowledge of this issue.

A call to arms to rethink social mediaJust in: The U.S. surgeon general, Vivek Murthy, called for a warning label for social media platforms in a Times Guest Essay, advising parents that the technology may be helping fuel a mental health crisis among adolescents. It’s the latest effort by regulators to impose restrictions on social networks — particularly over their effects on children and teens — and is a reminder of the increasing scrutiny of global tech giants. In his guest essay, Murthy writes that the issue has become an emergency:Why is it that we have failed to respond to the harms of social media when they are no less urgent or widespread than those posed by unsafe cars, planes or food? Scrutiny of social media’s effects on teenagers has grown in recent years. The social psychologist Jonathan Haidt describes the 2007 release of the iPhone as an inflection point, with suicidal behavior and reports of despair among adolescents rising sharply since.

An early bet on artificial intelligence thanks to a simple investment framework is helping the T. Rowe Price's Global Technology Fund (PRGTX) outperform the market for a second straight year. "Our framework led us to be early to this AI trend, [and] led us to be early to the chip intensity of this AI trend." That's due in part to its winning bets in AI names and semiconductor stocks – many of which have outperformed the S & P 500 and Nasdaq Composite . Early bets on AI Key to the $4.5 billion fund's recent success has been early positions in AI stocks and chipmaking darling Nvidia . The AI leader — added to the fund at the end of 2021 — today accounts for nearly 18% of the portfolio.

The impact on China’s EV makers will vary depending on the level of tariff and each company’s cost structure. “One critical issue for China is that the EU accounted for 38% of China’s EV exports in 2023,” Sebastian said. Liontrust Asset Management's Clare Pleydell-Bouverie is looking beyond the headline-makers, however, to other companies set to gain from AI adoption. She said AI is set to remove "a lot of waste out of people's jobs," and bring about a "phenomenal productivity uplift." 'Higher customer conversion' Pleydell-Bouverie also said consumer-facing companies like French beauty and cosmetics label L'Oreal stand to gain from the adoption of AI. "They've pioneered beauty tech as an industry," she said, adding that the company's generative AI beauty assistant system has a 60% higher customer conversion than in-store advisors. In addition to announcing the opening of its AI center, Salesforce also revealed that it had invested more than $200 million into U.K. startups via its venture capital arm, Salesforce Ventures. Many companies are in the AI infrastructure buildout phase right now. That's because, in order to enable AI applications, companies have to make the switch from "general purpose computing to accelerated computing," she said. "You can't run AI on traditional compute, it would be prohibitively expensive, and far too energy intensive," said Pleydell-Bouverie. That's a 35% increase from last year, she said, and all this incremental investment is being directed to AI initiatives. And the world is "only in the first five minutes of this AI infrastructure buildout," she added.

Cadence Design Systems , a U.S. company that provides electronic design software to chip makers, has been "completely missed" by investors, according to Clare Pleydell-Bouverie, fund manager at Liontrust. Liontrust's Global Technology Fund , with $265 million in assets, is invested in both stocks with around 3.3% allocated to each as of April 30. "Cadence is going to be the key enabler of this, and that's been completely missed by the market." Pleydell-Bouverie also pointed out that Cadence benefits from a "dual growth driver" — companies designing more chips to bring AI capabilities to consumers and Cadence using AI to improve its own chip design process and efficiency. Analysts remain broadly bullish on the stock, however , with 67% rating it as a buy and 28% maintaining a hold rating.
