CNN —There’s a difference between “long” and “epic,” although in movie terms the two frequently get confused. Martin Scorsese delivers the former but not the latter with “Killers of the Flower Moon,” his second consecutive three-and-a-half-hour movie derived from a true story and underwritten by a prestige-hungry streaming service. Notably, “Killers of the Flower Moon” will receive a wide big-screen launch that includes playing on hundreds of Imax screens. Either way, Scorsese has served up a movie that also plunges into a dark history and comes away with less bang for its bucks. “Killers of the Flower Moon” premieres October 20 in US theaters and will later play on Apple TV+.

Robbie Robertson ’s musical score backing “Killers of the Flower Moon” relies heavily on a low, endlessly repeated guitar or bass note that mirrors the soul-deadening events on screen. We’re in 1920s Osage territory in Oklahoma, where after an oil discovery the Native Americans are being systematically swindled, robbed and murdered by white people. Director Martin Scorsese repeats so many variations on this depressing mistreatment that experiencing the film is akin to being locked in a room with a pair of soulless sadists. Based on the book by David Grann , “Flower Moon” is a drudge and a dirge that runs longer than “Titanic,” nearly 3 1/2 hours.

Led by Scorsese, the filmmakers aimed to be scrupulously authentic in the ways they depicted the Osage, down to the threads in their clothing. “Few people in the world could afford that, but they documented their lives and their travel and where they lived so beautifully. By the early 20th century, the Osage were as au courant as Vogue editors. The wedding scene in “Killers of the Flower Moon” is a showstopper, with Mollie Kyle, the bride played by Gladstone, and her bridesmaid sisters in richly embroidered skirts, finger-woven belts and bespoke military coats, complete with brass buttons and braided epaulets.
