According to Dice's 2023 Tech Sentiment Report, 60% of tech workers in general are interested in leaving their jobs in 2024, which is up from 52% the year prior. According to Art Zeile, CEO of tech careers marketplace Dice, tech workers are most in demand in the aerospace, consulting, health care, financial services and education industries. Zeile says it's in spaces like these — non-tech enterprises with major tech branches — that tech workers can find better work-life balance and more stability than the tech leaders can provide. In corporate America outside of big tech, he said, "There is more of a dedication to making sure that the project gets fulfilled." Tech job growth geographicallyUltimately, Zeile says recent layoffs have induced a jarring disruption in two decades of growth in big tech.

Microsoft ended Friday's U.S. trading session as the most valuable publicly traded company, surpassing Apple after briefly topping the iPhone maker during intraday trading Thursday. Apple said Thursday that former Vice President Al Gore will retire from the company's board next month after serving as a director since 2003. Microsoft, meanwhile, got a vote of confidence Thursday after discussing its artificial intelligence capabilities to developers at an event in San Francisco. The analysts have the equivalent of a buy rating on Microsoft shares. Apple had been the most valuable public company for over a year, following brief periods when that distinction was held by Saudi Aramco and Microsoft.

LinkedIn has set aside an effort to relocate its data center technology out of its physical facilities and into Microsoft's Azure cloud, according to people familiar with the matter. A LinkedIn spokesperson confirmed that the Microsoft subsidiary changed direction on Blueshift and said LinkedIn continues to use Azure. Under the leadership of Nadella, Microsoft has moved some of its acquired assets to Azure, including GitHub and Minecraft developer Mojang. More recently, Azure has gained attention because of Microsoft's investment in OpenAI, which uses Azure infrastructure for running the large language models powering ChatGPT and other products. Microsoft said in October that third-quarter revenue from Azure and other cloud services grew 29%, while LinkedIn revenue was up 8%.

Just about everyone loses except the factory owners, who profit from churning out more shoddily made stuff at a rate that the skilled workers can't compete with. The numbers have prompted AI optimists to predict an economic boom and AI pessimists to worry about a future of fewer jobs. The question isn't how much AI helps out around the office but who it helps — and why. AI, in other words, is raising overall productivity by narrowing the gap between high performers and low performers. Researchers tasked people to write a short story, with and without the help of an AI tool for generating ideas. A few enterprising employers will go all in on hiring job candidates with less experience and boosting their performance with AI.

An Amazon cloud VP sent a motivational email to his team last week after GitHub, the developer code-sharing site owned by Microsoft, held an artificial intelligence event and released a bunch of new products. In it, he noted the products announced at the GitHub Universe developer conference were similar to what his team is currently working on. One of the big products announced at GitHub Universe was the general availability of its Copilot Chat, a chatbot that helps answer developer questions and identify bugs. AWS, meanwhile, has announced products like Bedrock, a service that makes foundation models more easily accessible, and CodeWhisperer, a coding assistant app. The new chatbot for AWS developers is one example of that strategy, as it's intended to guide developers towards more AWS services when they are building AI products, the person familiar with the project told BI.

Generative AI still mostly experimental, say executives

NEW YORK, Nov 9 (Reuters) - One year after the debut of ChatGPT created a global sensation, leaders of business, government and civil society said at the Reuters NEXT conference in New York that generative AI technology is still mostly in an experimental stage, with limited exceptions. Aguirre cited self-driving cars as an example of a technology struggling to make the transition to full deployment. “I’ve observed many generative AI applications that are in production while other customers are just beginning their journey.”One way generative AI was already being deployed widely, highlighted by speakers across industries, was to write computer code. Gary Marcus, a professor at New York University, said generative AI was error-prone in coding just like in other areas, but that the problem was less of a hindrance in the tech sector because programmers knew how to troubleshoot it. Companies should move slowly and deliberately when integrating the technology into uses where accuracy matters, executives emphasized.

Microsoft -owned GitHub on Wednesday introduced a more expensive Copilot assistant for developers inside companies that can explain and provide recommendations about internal source code. Last month Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella told analysts on a conference call that GitHub Copilot had accumulated 1 million paid users. The new GitHub Copilot Enterprise will cost more than double the business offering, at $39 per person per month. On GitHub's website, people with Copilot Enterprise licenses can choose repositories to fine-tune Copilot on proprietary code. From there, they can ask GitHub's Copilot chatbot about elements of existing code and suggest lines of code in development environments.

Microsoft CEO Satya Nadella made a surprise appearance at OpenAI's developer conference on Monday with a message: Come build with us. 1 is to build the best system, so that you can build the best models and then make that all available to developers," Nadella told OpenAI CEO Sam Altman, on stage at DevDay in San Francisco. Azure has become Microsoft's key growth engine in recent years and has helped revive the company's brand among developers. Microsoft boasts an exclusive license on OpenAI's GPT-4 large language model that can generate human-like prose in response to a few words of text. Developers who are building on top of OpenAI can look to the Azure Marketplace to "get to market rapidly," Nadella said.

We are actually going to be looking at this in the very early days of generative AI. casey newtonYeah, this feels like one of the big questions in AI right now. rebecca tushnetSo I see why you say that’s strange, but in fact, it’s exactly how you would make a general-purpose tool. But now, finally, along come these new technologies to take them down a peg, and they’re actually going to have to work for a living. So maybe they’re slapping, like, AI sort of things around the stories that they’re aggregating.

Microsoft's early investment in AI may already be paying off.
