Trump won the presidency in 2016 by stunning Democrat Hillary Clinton to win all three states by a combined margin of about 80,000 votes. But, as in other states, Democrats have been concerned about the risk of depressed turnout and some gains for Trump among Black voters in Philadelphia. Eight years later, the two states split again, when Roosevelt comfortably won Pennsylvania and Michigan narrowly went to Republican Wendell Willkie. This trio of states has arguably become the most consistent tipping point in American politics. In the nine elections since 1920 when they split their vote, the candidate who carried two of these three states won seven times.

More than 5 billion people don’t consume enough iodine, vitamin E or calcium, found the study published August 29 in the journal The Lancet Global Health. Billions of people don’t consume enough of at least seven micronutrients present in hundreds of foods, according to a new study. For these reasons, the research team estimated the prevalence of inadequate intakes of 15 micronutrients among 185 countries, or 99.3% of the population. “Therefore, iodine might be the only nutrient for which inadequate intake from food is largely overestimated,” the authors said, referring to their findings.

Summer 2024 could be remembered not just for its historic temperatures, but for its successive heat waves with unusual geographic reach. More than 36 million Americans were under advisories, watches or warnings for dangerous and excessive heat Saturday night, according to National Weather Service data. The Gulf Coast and the South were also in for triple-digit highs for much of the week, the weather service said. "The prolonged nature of the heat will increase the risk of heat-related illness," it said in warning that much of the West would experience dangerous heat next week. "The combination of high temperatures increasing into the lower 100s along with high humidity will result in major to extreme" risk for heat-related illness, the weather service said.
