In an interview with popular podcaster Joe Rogan, Republican vice presidential nominee JD Vance suggested that he and Donald Trump can win the “normal gay guy vote” and that families with transgender children are looking for an edge in Ivy League college admissions. An early portion of the interview focused heavily on transgender people and transition-related medical care, which Vance described as “pharmaceutical conversion therapy” for gay people. “I mean that’s what to me is so crazy about some of the hyper-left-wing reaction,” Vance responded. “Well, I think I’m probably going to pick you, but I don’t know, and I’m not ready to make a decision,” Vance recalled Trump saying. “We’re sitting there watching, like, some stupid show, ‘Emily in Paris’ on Netflix or something,” Vance said, before catching himself.

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. — The longtime music director at a northern Michigan church said he was fired just a few months before retirement after officials learned that he was in a same-sex marriage, a dismissal that has angered members and led to sidewalk protests by the choir. “He’s extremely talented, he’s perfect on the piano, he has perfect pitch and because of him, I look forward to going to church every week,” said Bob Holden, a chorister at St. Francis Church in Traverse City. The Catholic Church teaches that marriage is a lifelong union between a man and a woman. “We take employee privacy very seriously and are not able to disclose details about individual personnel matters,” the Diocese of Gaylord, which oversees St. Francis, said in a written statement. In a time where there is so much controversy in the world, the church needs to be a place of peace, and instead it’s turmoil after turmoil,” church member Toni Stanfield said.

CNN —Republican vice presidential candidate JD Vance suggested in an interview with podcast host Joe Rogan that aired Thursday that White upper- and middle-class children are incentivized to identify as transgender to gain admission to elite colleges. The only one that’s available in the hyper-woke mindset is if you become gender nonbinary,” the Ohio senator added. We’re letting a grown man walk around in a mini skirt in broad daylight,” Vance said. “If that’s what you’re doing, you’re a pervert. Vance also said he believes most Americans are open-minded about what he described as “lifestyle choices,” but transgender athletes who compete in women’s sports cross a line.

Some comics online did not specifically call out Hinchcliffe’s jokes at the rally but shared broader thoughts about comedians’ crossing the line. On an August episode of “The Joe Rogan Experience,” Rogan said Trump should hire Hinchcliffe to “write bangers” for him on the road. But Hinchcliffe’s joke about Puerto Rico landed poorly across both political parties. While most comedians did not come to Hinchcliffe’s defense, “The Daily Show” host Jon Stewart said such jokes should have been expected from a comedian like Hinchcliffe. But with Hinchcliffe’s joke, she said, “it almost just felt like he was saying, ‘I don’t like Puerto Ricans,’ which is so clearly offensive.

Mendes made the remarks before performing his unreleased song “The Mountain,” which features lyrics referencing the speculation over his sexuality. Many fans online said they feel that the public is not entitled to know about the private lives of celebrities. “You need real young people,” said Austin, the founder of ForwardBlue. He says he’s devoted as much time as possible to politics since then, postponing college and deprioritizing typical adolescent activities. “I spent every minute I could after school volunteering for my state party, building websites for Democrats, doing whatever I could,” he said. What sets the group apart from other Democratic groups trying to reach young people is not just its message, Austin said, but how it delivers it. “The rent is too damn high,” Austin said, referring to a political moment that went viral when he was in first grade.

First openly transgender lawyer to argue at Supreme Court

An American Civil Liberties Union lawyer will make history in December as the first openly transgender attorney to argue before the U.S. Supreme Court, opposing Tennessee’s Republican-backed law banning gender-affirming medical care for transgender minors. The Supreme Court on Monday ordered that the argument time for the ban’s challengers be divided between the Justice Department and attorneys representing the original plaintiffs who sued the state. Several plaintiffs — including two transgender boys, a transgender girl and their parents — sued in Tennessee to defend the treatments they have said improved their happiness and wellbeing. The Supreme Court has confronted several cases in the past decade implicating LGBTQ rights. In 2020, it ruled that a landmark federal law forbidding workplace discrimination protects gay and transgender employees.
