Roughly 2 in 3 adults have a negative view of the practice, according to a recent survey from Bankrate, and 30% say tipping culture has gotten out of control. Etiquette pros say tipping guidelines are just that — guidelines. "Good tipping feels good for everyone involved," Daniel Post Senning, co-author of "Emily Post's Etiquette, The Centennial Edition," previously told Make It. Here are some people etiquette experts say are worth considering tipping. But many camps forbid counselors from taking tips, says Diane Gottsman, a national etiquette expert and founder of the Protocol School of Texas.

Here are the top numbers and notes to know from the final round of the 152nd Open Championship. For the second time this season, Schauffele shot a final round 65 to win a major. Schauffele is the first player to win the PGA and Open in the same season since Rory McIlroy did it 10 years ago. With the 2024 major schedule completed, this is the first time American players have swept a major season (in a year when all four were contested) since 1982. Of the last six players to win multiple majors in the same season, four won another major within the next two years.

Real talk on a Sunday: “Foodie” is a smug, unpleasant word, a diminutive, patronizing expression that reduces a person’s keen interest in the delicious to a silly fascination with cooking and eating. “Foodie” is condescension wrapped in affectionate disdain, even for those who embrace the identity. We should all experience the freedom to cook whatever we want to cook, however we want to cook it, without judgment. Like, for instance, this roasted salmon with peas and radishes. It profiles as superfancy, exactly the sort of dish you’d expect a foodie to cook on the weekend, with its pretty pinks and greens and oranges and its fragrantly nutty, miso-amped sauce.
What’s Left for France’s Left?

When a left-wing coalition came first this month in France’s parliamentary elections and upended a predicted victory for the far right, supporters filled the streets. “The left has awakened,” a supporter said. Almost immediately after their victory, the parties in the coalition started fighting among themselves. “It’s going to be hard,” said Zahia Hamdane of France Unbowed, the far-left party of the firebrand leader Jean-Luc Mélenchon, on Friday. “I took it very badly yesterday.”The alliance of four left-wing parties — Communists, Socialists, Greens and France Unbowed — was hastily pulled together after President Emmanuel Macron dissolved the National Assembly and called for snap elections last month.

Reuters —Germany plans to halve its military aid to Ukraine next year, despite concerns that US support for Kyiv could potentially diminish if Republican candidate Donald Trump returns to the White House. German aid to Ukraine will be cut to €4 billion ($4.35 billion) in 2025 from around €8 billion in 2024, according to a draft of the 2025 budget seen by Reuters. Germany has faced criticism for repeatedly missing a NATO target of spending 2% of its economic output on defense. Days after Russia’s 2022 invasion of Ukraine, Chancellor Olaf Scholz announced a “Zeitenwende” – German for historic turning point - with a €100 billion special fund to bring the military up to speed. The defense budget is set to receive a meagre €1.3 billion more than in 2024, far below the €6.7 billion requested by Pistorius.

The ‘Other Marine’ of French Politics Hits Back
  + stars: | 2024-07-18 | by ( Roger Cohen | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
When Marine Tondelier, the leader of the Greens, is told that she is sometimes called “the other Marine” of French politics, she hits back firmly. “No!” she says. “Le Pen is the other Marine.”Given how rapidly Ms. Tondelier’s star has risen in recent months, her response is not outrageous. Less than two weeks later, the profoundly intractable new National Assembly of three large political blocs — left, center and nationalist right — gathers for the first time on Thursday. As it does, one question looms over a left-wing alliance that seems more fractured by the day: What to do with its about 190 seats in the 577-seat lower house when that is far short of an absolute majority?

This Is Literally Your Brain on Drugs

The image, as it happens, comes from dozens of brain scans produced by researchers at Washington University School of Medicine in St. Louis who gave psilocybin, the compound in “magic mushrooms,” to participants in a study before sending them into a functional M.R.I. The kaleidoscopic whirl of colors they recorded is essentially a heat map of brain changes, with the red, orange and yellow hues reflecting a significant departure from normal activity patterns. The blues and greens reflect normal brain activity that occurs in the so-called functional networks, the neural communication pathways that connect different regions of the brain. The scans, published Wednesday in the journal Nature, offer a rare glimpse into the wild neural storm associated with mind-altering drugs. “Psilocybin, in contrast to any other drug we’ve tested, has this massive effect on the whole brain that was pretty unexpected,” said Dr. Nico Dosenbach, a professor of neurology at Washington University and a senior author of the study.

French President Emmanuel Macron broke his silence on the political earthquake that took place in France last weekend, calling on mainstream parties to work together to form a coalition government. In an open letter to regional newspapers on Wednesday, Macron said "no one won" the parliamentary election and called on mainstream parties with "republican values" to form a governing alliance. With just 180 seats, the NFP fell short of achieving an absolute majority of 289 in the 577-seat National Assembly, France's lower house of parliament. Macron's centrist 'Together' bloc came second in the ballot with 163 seats, and RN and its allies won 143 seats. They can reject the nomination of a party, if it's not seen to have enough seats to form a stable government.

President Emmanuel Macron’s centrist Ensemble alliance came in second, preventing the far right from taking power. The stakes couldn’t have been higher, and it is hard to overstate the sense of urgency with which French voters flocked to the polls. It ought to be noted, however, that under half of centrist voters went for the left in a run-off against the far right. Many had assumed that it was a foregone conclusion that the far right would win a majority, absolute or otherwise. On all those occasions, and again last week, many held their noses and voted for the center to keep the far right in check.

“If people really want salads from McDonald’s we will gladly relaunch salads,” said Joe Erlinger, the president of McDonald’s USA, in a June interview at the Wall Street Journal’s annual Global Food Forum. For McDonald’s, putting salads on the menu was likely a way to avoid the veto vote and stay atop recent healthy food trends. CNN —Vegetables are great not only for their versatility — they can be eaten raw or cooked, whole or chopped — but also for their health benefits. Eating three servings of baby carrots a week can give a significant boost of important nutrients found in the orange root vegetables, according to a new unpublished study presented June 30 in Chicago at Nutrition 2024, the annual meeting of the American Society for Nutrition. After four weeks, the researchers found those who ate the carrots had a 10.8% increase in carotenoids in their skin, natural antioxidants found to have health benefits, such as preventing inflammation and promoting heart health, according to the Cleveland Clinic. But those who consumed the carrots and the supplement saw the most benefits and increased their skin carotenoids by 21.6%. Eating vegetables can protect against heart disease, some cancers, diabetes and obesity, according to the CDC.

At The Wall Street Journal's Global Food Forum in June, Joe Erlinger, the president of McDonald's US, detailed the company's missteps in meatless burgers and salads. Over the years, McDonald's has been able to fold in some noncore items — namely, coffee and chicken. It's not just consumer demand that's keeping McDonald's menu limited to the more-traditional, less-than-body-boosting items — it's its franchisees, too. The bloc brings together five different parties. Far-left France Unbowed and the Communist party has joined with the center-left parties, the socialists and the greens to form a New Popular Front. It’s equally hard to imagine how the current constellation would allow France to play an important role regarding Ukraine. The left has remained relatively quiet on Ukraine - different parties from the coalition have slightly different stances - France Unbowed is against what it calls “escalation” with Russia. Macron’s gamble may have prevented the far right from coming to power, but it could yet plunge the country into chaos.

Even as vote counting was still underway across France on Sunday night, one thing was clear: The left-wing coalition called the New Popular Front did much better than expected and helped deny the far right a victory. Projections show the coalition coming out in front and gaining dozens of seats — a feat for an alliance that was forged only last month with the goal of keeping the far-right National Rally from power. The alliance includes four left-wing parties: Communists, Socialists, Greens and the far-left party, France Unbowed. While many in France cheered what appeared to be a loss for the far right, others were fearful of what the far left might bring. Last week, after the first vote in a two-round election, the coalition withdrew more than 130 of its candidates from three-way races in which the far right had a chance of winning — and pushed their supporters to vote strategically against far-right candidates.

“Without an absolute majority, the government will be at the mercy of opposition parties banding together” to topple it, said Dominique Rousseau, an emeritus professor of public law at the Panthéon-Sorbonne University in Paris. It was not clear whether the centrists or the right-wing National Rally would be the second-largest bloc. When it wasn’t, Mr. Macron’s government came dangerously close to falling. This time, Mr. Macron’s options appear far more limited. Some analysts believe that Mr. Macron’s position will become so untenable he will have to resign, but he has said he won’t.

Toby Melville | ReutersLONDON — The U.K.'s Labour Party won a huge parliamentary majority in the country's general election, but a quirk of the British electoral system means it did so with just 34% of the total votes cast. Results show that the opposition Labour Party has won 412 parliamentary seats of the total 650, with just two seats yet to be declared. This translates as roughly 63% of the total seats, but Labour has won just 34% of the total "popular" vote, while the Conservative Party has secured nearly 24% of that number. Meanwhile, smaller parties including the centrist Liberal Democrats, right-wing Reform U.K. and the Greens took nearly 43% of the popular vote but gained just less than 18% of the seats available. Unlike in other voting systems, there are no second rounds or ranking of first- and second-choice candidates, meaning it can be difficult for smaller parties to translate an increased share of the popular vote into parliamentary seats.
