Don't chase meme stock GameStop here, says Jefferies

GameStop posted its first profitable quarter in two years, but the video game retailer still faces fundamental headwinds within its core business that will weigh on its stock, according to Jefferies. GME YTD mountain GameStop shares rallied Wednesday. Jefferies said software sales have been hurt by "the continued shift towards digital downloads and a lighter holiday release slate." And with 22.1% of GameStop's stock float being sold short, the short interest also could be boosting the share price Wednesday. When a stock is sold short , an investor borrows the shares with the hope the price will fall.
GameStop surge ignores basic rule of value

NEW YORK, March 22 (Reuters Breakingviews) - GameStop (GME.N) investors sent the company’s shares up 40% on Wednesday morning after fourth-quarter results showed it had swung to a net profit. That suggests the company that counts Chewy Founder Ryan Cohen as its chair has put some of its meme-fueled fundraising to use. Unfortunately, investors have forgotten that with such a surge, GameStop will have to grow into a new valuation. The chain reported net profit of $48 million compared with a loss of $148 million in the same quarter a year ago. The three major U.S. stock indexes, which were mostly directionless prior to the Fed announcement, jumped higher then deflated as investors digested the accompanying statement and Chair Jerome Powell's subsequent Q&A session. Worries persist that the Fed's aggressive battle against inflation could tip the economy into recession, and recent turmoil in the banking sector, sparked by failures of SVB Financial Group (SIVB.O) and Signature Bank (SBNY.O), have exacerbated those fears. All 11 major sectors of the S&P 500 ended the session deep in negative territory, with real estate (.SPLRCR) suffering the steepest percentage drop, its largest one-day plunge since Sept. 13. The S&P 500 posted six new 52-week highs and 13 new lows; the Nasdaq Composite recorded 44 new highs and 179 new lows. Volume on U.S. exchanges was 11.84 billion shares, compared with the 12.70 billion average over the last 20 trading days.

REUTERS/Brendan McDermidMarch 21 (Reuters) - GameStop Corp (GME.N) on Tuesday posted a surprise profit for the fourth quarter, its first since early 2021, as lower costs and job cuts padded the videogame retailer's bottom line, sending its shares nearly 50% higher in extended trading. The retailer posted an adjusted profit of 16 cents per share, compared with Wall Street expectations for a loss of 13 cents. The so-called "meme stock", which is the top trending ticker on retail trader forum Stocktwits, has declined 4% this year. Net profit for the quarter ended Jan. 29 was $48.2 million, compared with a loss of $147.50 million a year earlier.
Two things will capture all the market's attention in the coming week: The Federal Reserve's March meeting and the government's ongoing attempt to quell worries about the banking system. If it raises, Powell should speak softly; no raise and Powell should strongly remind the market that the work isn't done. Still, for the week, U.S. stocks fared better, with the S & P 500 rising 1.5% and the Nasdaq gaining 4.5%. On Thursday, initial jobless claims for the week ended March 11 came in at 192,000, a decrease of 20,000 from the prior week and below the expected 205,000. March 14 (Reuters) - Shares of AMC Entertainment Holdings Inc (AMC.N) tumbled about 17% on Tuesday after shareholders voted in favor of converting the company's preferred stock into common shares. The approval of the measures at Tuesday's shareholder meeting comes as AMC faces an April 27 hearing in a lawsuit claiming it circumvented shareholders who were against adding more shares. The preferred shares, which trade under the symbol "APE," have lost over 70% since they were issued in August as part of a plan to pay down the company's debt. The common stock was down 17.3% at $4.51 following the vote, putting it on track for its worst day in almost two years. The preferred shares were up 6.9% at $1.85.
Eastman Kodak (KODK) was a Dow stock. I’ve written about B2B (aka business-to-business) software companies, cloud computing firms, IPOs and SPACs, and cannabis/pot stocks. There have been more flavors of the month in the stock market during my CNN career than at your local Baskin-Robbins. It’s fine to have a lot of your money in S&P 500 ETFs and other funds that will track the broader market. “We still continue to believe that over long periods of time, stocks provide a reasonable hedge against inflation,” Patterson said.
Robinhood’s stock awards tell a cautionary fable

The now-abandoned payouts to Tenev and Bhatt were a slab of “market-based restricted stock units” distributed ahead of Robinhood’s initial public offering in July 2021. The system works in reverse, too, however: When executives give back stock awards, the company gains nothing in cash terms. U.S. accounting rules treat stock awards geared to a company’s stock price as a gift that cannot be returned. In short, by handing back their awards, Robinhood’s founders have neither robbed from themselves, nor given to anyone else. Even without this unhappy effect on earnings, shareholders should be wary of the kinds of awards Robinhood doled out at its public company debut.
"The short covering in U.S. tech stocks from Jan 31st to Feb 15th is the second largest in magnitude over any 12-day period in the past decade," Goldman Sachs wrote in a note reviewed by Reuters. JPMorgan also said in a daily note to clients that communication services and information technology stocks had led the short covering in its books on Thursday. Overall, JPMorgan said multi-strategy and equity quantitative hedge funds had led the short covering, while equity long-short funds had been ahead in bets against stocks. Amid stock rises in February, hedge funds were forced to unwind their bets against the shares. read moreReporting by Carolina Mandl in New York; Editing by Bradley PerrettOur Standards: The Thomson Reuters Trust Principles.
Feb 15 (Reuters) - The founder of WallStreetBets, which has been credited with helping ignite investors' frenzy into "meme" stocks, sued Reddit Inc on Wednesday, accusing it of wrongly banning him from moderating the community and undermining his trademark rights. According to the complaint filed in federal court in Oakland, California, Rogozinski applied to trademark "WallStreetBets" in March 2020, one month before his ouster, when the community reached 1 million subscribers. "Jamie was removed as a moderator of r/WallStreetBets by Reddit and banned by the community moderators for attempting to enrich himself. The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission (SEC) was also due to vote on whether to propose changing rules protecting client assets held by investment managers. Trade groups have broadly welcomed the commission's proposal to cut the so-called settlement cycle to a single business day from two, six years after an earlier SEC rule shortened the period from three days. GameStop's share price tanked after its earlier volatility resulted in a multi-billion-dollar margin call on trading platform operators such as Robinhood Markets Inc (HOOD.O). A shorter settlement cycle should see fewer defaults and thus help cut margin deposit costs, thereby reducing the chances of such a scenario recurring, according to the SEC. Retail investors had a poor year in 2022, with the average portfolio ending the year down around 35% from all-time highs, Vanda Research previously estimated. However, retail investors have shown renewed interest in the early part of 2023. Meanwhile, shares of early meme stocks GameStop (GME.N) and AMC Entertainment (AMC.N) have pared some losses after last year's tumble. "Investor enthusiasm is also attracting short-sellers that are skeptical about some of the resulting valuations," said Evan Niu, an analyst at Ortex, which tracks real-time short interest data. AI software firm Veritone (VERI.O), SoundHound and BigBear.ai also show a pick up in short interest, Ortex data showed.

Analysts said the new cash may afford Bed Bath only a few quarters to revive its business, and a weakening economy would diminish any chance of a successful turnaround. Bed Bath declined to comment on Hudson Bay Capital's role in the share sale. "All is on hold," a maker of children's apparel said last week, adding that it had stopped shipping products to Bed Bath since early January. Bed Bath said it was planning to raise just over $1 billion through sales of preferred stock and warrants and from securities when the warrants are exercised. Bed Bath will receive a waiver on its recent bank default should the proposed offering succeed, the company said. Bed Bath & Beyond also appointed Holly Etlin, a bankruptcy expert, as interim chief financial officer. "It’s a similar situation in which a deeply financially distressed company is attempting to sell securities," said Lynn LoPucki, a professor at the University of Florida. Sources have told Reuters that Bed Bath & Beyond has lined up liquidators to close additional stores unless a last-minute buyer emerges.
Meme investors go to bed, take a bath

And that showed on Monday, when American sheets and curtains retailer Bed Bath & Beyond (BBBY.O) moved to bring in a new cash injection. Bed Bath & Beyond has been on the brink of collapse for a while, warning recently that a bankruptcy filing could be on the horizon. Recently, though, even as talk of bankruptcy has grown, shares in Bed Bath & Beyond have been on a tear again. That culminated in the announcement Tuesday morning that it had priced an offering of preferred stock and warrants, which comes on top of the rearrangement of some of its debt. CONTEXT NEWSRetailer Bed Bath & Beyond said on Feb. 7 that it had priced an offering of convertible preferred stock, as well as warrants to purchase further preferred shares and common stock.
LONDON, Feb 6 (Reuters) - Hedge funds betting against stocks globally abandoned those trades last week at the fastest pace since 2015, surpassing the speed of their exodus from the meme stock frenzy two years ago, according to a Goldman Sachs research note. The largest short positions held by hedge funds were in industrials and information technology companies, the Goldman note said. It added that hedge funds also exited many long positions in Asian developing markets and Chinese equities. Meanwhile, after stuttering recoveries during a volatile two years, AMC and GME are now trading above their price levels of Jan. 15, 2021 just before the meme stock frenzy began. Resurgent risk appetite among some investors has also fuelled rallies in the shares of so-called meme stocks since the start of this year, though many analysts are sceptical the recent moves will last.
Shares of movie theater chain AMC (AMC) have soared nearly 65% so far in 2023, and AMC (AMC)’s companion preferred stock (which trades under the ticker APE as a nod to the nickname AMC (AMC) fans have given themselves on social media) has more than doubled. So did investors learn nothing from last year’s market meltdown? I don’t agree with this market rally in meme stocks,” said Erik Ristuben, chief investment strategist with Russell Investments. Another strategist agrees this recent rally for meme stocks and other speculative bets may not end well. If they’re upbeat about spending, that could keep the rally in consumer stocks going.
Cohen has privately called Tritton, a former chief executive of Bed Bath & Beyond, "conflicted and unqualified," said the people, who were not permitted to discuss the private negotiations. Bed Bath & Beyond is preparing to file for bankruptcy, Reuters reported this week. Investors cheered Cohen's reported involvement at Nordstrom by sending the stock price up 25% in after-hours trading on Thursday. The Wall Street Journal first reported Cohen's stake in Nordstrom. As possible replacements on the Nordstrom board, Cohen has identified executives with experience at retail and e-commerce companies, the people said.

loadingNow, AMC is asking shareholders for authorization to further increase its common stock count tenfold. Holders of the preferred stock will be allowed to vote on the matter alongside holders of common stock. "This increases the odds of (the new common stock authorization) passing this time," said Jacob Thomas, a professor of accounting and finance at Yale School of Management. "Given that meme stock speculators can drive prices far from fundamentals, it makes sense for a company like AMC to issue stock when management believes its own stock is overvalued," Harvey said. AMC said in the Jan. 26 filing that it is proposing the conversion of preferred stock to common stock to eliminate the trading discount.

But it’s still been a solid start to the year for the market — and many of last year’s losers have led the way on Wall Street so far in January. Discovery, which plunged nearly 60% last year, has surged 55% so far in 2023 and is the best performer in the S&P 500. Rising market tide lifting questionable boatsStill, some investors are worried this year’s market rally is eerily reminiscent of prior market bubbles. GameStop (GME) is up nearly 25%. “Most investors don’t realize the Fed has to fight the inflation in the stock market, too,” Trainer added.
