London CNN —Three economists were awarded the Nobel Prize Monday for their research into how the nature of institutions helps explain why some countries become rich and others remain poor. Daron Acemoglu, Simon Johnson and James Robinson will share the prize, which carries a cash award of 11 million Swedish kronor ($1 million). The authors warned that “the current path of AI is neither good for the economy nor for democracy.”The latest Nobel Prize in economics was announced in Stockholm on October 14, 2024. In “Why Nations Fail,” he and Robinson argued that China, because it lacks inclusive institutions, would not be able to sustain its economic growth. The economics prize is officially known as Bank of Sweden Prize in Economic Sciences in Memory of Alfred Nobel.

The Chinese stock market soared after news of a stimulus package but plunged again on Wednesday. Risk remains high in Chinese stocks, which is why investors should exercise caution. The recent volatility in the Chinese market doesn't come as a surprise to Zehrid Osmani, portfolio manager at $21 billion Martin Currie. Valuations are low coming out of the pandemic, creating an attractive entry point into the market, Osmani said. He points to some structural challenges the Chinese economy faces, such as an aging population and a slump in the property sector.

Delta Air Lines expects to grow earnings in the fourth quarter, thanks to resilient travel demand and strong bookings for year-end holidays. The Atlanta-based carrier on Thursday forecast fourth-quarter adjusted earnings of $1.60 to $1.85 per share, compared with Wall Street estimates of $1.71, according to LSEG, and above the adjusted $1.28 per share it reported a year earlier. Revenue will likely rise between 2% and 4% from a a year earlier, though the carrier warned it expects a 1-point revenue hit from lower demand before and after the Nov. 5 U.S. presidential election. The incident was a $380 million hit to revenue, Delta said. Delta said it still expects its full-year adjusted earnings to come in between $6 to $7 a share, excluding the CrowdStrike impact.

Pittsburgh CNN —In the years that Pennsylvania Senate candidate Dave McCormick led one of the world’s largest hedge funds, the firm bet millions of dollars against some of the state’s biggest and most iconic companies, financial filings show. For financial institutions, short positions can be lucrative. The fund shorted about four dozen companies from Pennsylvania during McCormick’s tenure, the records show. The fund did invest in stocks of some of the same Pennsylvania companies it shorted in other years, and overall, it reported spending more money buying stocks of Pennsylvania companies than shorting them in four of the five annual reports reviewed by CNN. She argued that the short positions Bridgewater took in Pennsylvania companies didn’t negatively impact employees because they represented a small fraction of each company’s overall value.

Tax-loss harvesting is a common year-end method used by investors and money managers to minimize taxes. The practice involves selling off losing positions to offset taxes on realized capital gains incurred on winning investments. To find the names worth selling, CNBC Pro used its stock-screening tool to hunt for names with a market cap exceeding $1 billion. The cloud platform company's stock has lost roughly 57% this year, with the average price target implying that shares could fall about 18%. If you are willing to stomach significant short-term volatility for the chance at higher returns in the long run, you're generally considered an "aggressive" investor. Generally, aggressive investors hold larger portions of riskier assets, such as stocks, while conservatives prefer the safety and predictability of bonds. You'd think, then, that cryptocurrency, an extremely volatile asset, would be the exclusive territory of aggressive investors. So are young, wealthy investors changing the definitions of what it means to be aggressive or conservative? "We don't have an aggressive, momentum-style market in digital assets that typically attracts aggressive investors."
