GLASGOW, Aug 9 (Reuters) - Emma Finucane became the first British track rider to win the women's sprint gold at the World Championships for 10 years as she beat Germany's Lea Friedrich in the final on Wednesday. The 20-year-old beat two-time world champion Emma Hinze in the semi-final round and then proved too strong for Friedrich in the gold-medal ride, winning 2-0. But in Welsh rider Finucane they have unearthed a new force in women's sprinting just a year out from the Paris Olympics. "I get the feeling we're going to be talking about Emma Finucane for a very long time," Britain's former world champion Chris Boardman, commentating for the BBC, said. Finucane was beaten to gold by Hinze's Germany in the team sprint alongside Sophie Capewell and Lauren Bell but dominated a high-class field in the individual event.

Researchers at the federal Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California repeated the breakthrough in an experiment on July 30 that produced a higher energy output than in December, the newspaper said, citing people with knowledge of the results. The same lab achieved a net energy gain in a fusion experiment using lasers on Dec. 5, 2022. The scientists focused a laser on a target of fuel to fuse two light atoms into a denser one, releasing the energy. The laboratory confirmed to the FT that energy gain had been achieved again at its laser facility, adding that analysis of the results was underway. The Lawrence Livermore National Lab and the U.S. Energy Department did not immediately respond to Reuters' request for comment.

On Thursday morning, a 2 km area around the bomb will be evacuated as the Australian sappers try to disarm the fuse. Hunt on Wednesday ordered schools to shut and prohibited work from Thursday morning as a precaution to manage any bomb impact. Companies Ford Motor Co FollowWASHINGTON, June 6 (Reuters) - Ford Motor Co (F.N) said on Tuesday it is expanding and issuing a new recall for 125,000 sport utility vehicles and trucks because engine failures may cause a fire. Ford said isolated engine manufacturing issues can cause the engine to fail prematurely and in that event engine oil or fuel vapor may be released, increasing the risk of fire and injury. Ford said on Tuesday it had reports of at least three vehicles that suffered fires after getting the 2022 recall fix. Ford and NHTSA advised owners to park and shut off the engine if they hear unexpected engine noises, notice a reduction in vehicle power, or see smoke. Ford said last week that dealers will add an in-line fuse to the battery monitor sensor power circuit.

CNN —Ford, the parent company of Lincoln, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration are warning owners of nearly 143,000 Lincoln MKC compact SUVs to park them outside and away from buildings and other vehicles because they could potentially catch fire, even when not running. Andrew Holland, the head of FIA, said there is little concern about geopolitical supply risk in the supply chain as no critical parts or materials face global supply shortfalls or come only from unstable countries. "The biggest challenge honestly is just scale," Holland said. "We want to make sure the supply chain companies are aware that fusion is coming so they can make the investments to scale up." While there is a global lack of tritium, a fuel that many companies plan to use to fire fusion plants, Holland said that is not a concern because the companies plan to breed tritium in the fusion plants with the use of lithium.
