New York CNN —Subway’s footlong cookies were so popular they had a shortage. They use Subway’s flatbread, rolled up with pepperoni and cheese, chicken and cheese or double cheese, and served hot. The $3 rollups are part of its Sidekicks menu, adding to its successful lineup of giant cookies, churros and soft pretzels. I usually fry my bacon, but the recipe said to bake it, and I really liked this method. The bacon slices on a wired sheet pan. I placed five strips of bacon on a baking wire rack on a sheet pan and put it in the heated oven. After 20 minutes in the oven, the bacon turned out perfectly crispy. Cooking the bacon on the wire rack was easier than frying it, in my opinion.

CNN —“Good news is bad news” has been a common refrain for a while now. When economic reports are released that are solid, they have all too often been clouded with concerns that good news for the economy actually means a longer wait before the Federal Reserve rolls out rate cuts. Inflation as measured by the Consumer Price Index cooled more than expected in May, with prices holding flat on the month for the first time since July 2022. The markets don’t seem to be buying the one-cut plan, especially after the Producer Price Index on Thursday showed that wholesale prices fell from April to May and the BLS’ Import and Export Price Index showed that US imports prices fell 0.4% in May after rising 0.9% in April. And more good news is likely on the way this next week and later this month, Brusuelas said.

Hong Kong/Seoul CNN —Three varieties of “fire chicken” instant ramen noodles popularized by a viral internet challenge have been recalled in Denmark after they were deemed to be too spicy. The level of capsaicin found in Buldak Hot Chicken Ramen 3x Spicy, Buldak Hot Chicken Ramen 2x Spicy and Hot Chicken Stew was so high that it could poison consumers, the Danish Veterinary and Food Administration said in a statement issued Tuesday. South Korean noodle giant Samyang, which developed the ramen, said on Wednesday that the products were not being recalled because of quality issues. Buldak, which means “fire chicken” in Korean, was developed by Samyang’s chief executive, Kim Jung-soo, a housewife who married into the family business and eventually took over. According to taste testers, the original buldak ramen scored around 4,000 on the Scoville scale, which is roughly equivalent to the heat of jalapeños.

Last year, Gwyneth Paltrow revealed that she eats an anti-inflammatory diet after suffering from long COVID. Eating an anti-inflammatory diet — meaning mostly fresh or minimally processed foods and minimal highly processed foods — can help reduce inflammation, according to the Cleveland Clinic. "Mushrooms contain multiple natural anti-inflammatory compounds, including essential vitamins and minerals, as well as numerous anti-inflammatory metabolites," Kodamala said. "Turmeric contains the active ingredient curcumin, which is an antioxidant and anti-inflammatory, making it a real powerhouse to include in your diet," she said. Nuts may also have anti-inflammatory properties, according to a 2023 review, and so might ginger, according to a 2022 review — but more research is needed on both.

Eastern Ukraine CNN —Ukrainian crews working on US-supplied Abrams tanks have told CNN of a series of the weaknesses and flaws with the armored vehicles, calling into doubt their utility on the war’s ever-changing frontlines. Young men without college degrees have been dropping out of the workforce for decades. On Thursday, the Pew Research Center released a report delving into whether a college degree is worth it. The report compares economic outcomes for young adults who've completed a college degree with those who have not. "Accompanying that wages were also bid up for non-college educated young men at that time." Fry added, "the rising rates of young men with criminal records" could be a reason given they could have a hard time finding work.

In 2011, 86% of college graduates said their degree had been a good investment; in 2013, 70% of U.S. adults said a college education was "very important," according to Pew Research Center and Gallup surveys. Today, 29% of Americans say that college isn't worth the cost — and roughly half (49%) say having a four-year college degree is less important for landing a high-paying job today than it was 20 years ago, according to a new survey from the Pew Research Center. Only 22% of U.S. adults say the cost of getting a four-year degree today is worth it even if someone has to take out loans, Pew found. College graduates on average earn more than those without a four-year degree — but this so-called college wage premium is shrinking. A recent report from the San Francisco Federal Reserve found that the college wage gap peaked in the mid-2010s but declined by four percentage points in 2022.

watch nowOutcomes for workers without a degree are improvingIn fact, young adults without a college degree are doing better than they have in years, according to Pew's analysis of government data. Since then, circumstances — and earnings — have continued to rise for workers with just a high school diploma or some college. Improving job opportunities for "new-collar" workers without a degree continues to drive more students away from college. Finishing college puts workers on track to earn a median of $2.8 million over their lifetimes, compared with $1.6 million if they only had a high school diploma, Georgetown's report found. Adults with at least a bachelor's degree report higher financial well-being than adults with lower levels of education, according to a Federal Reserve study on economic well-being of U.S. households.

But the vast difference between the net worth of young adults with degrees compared with those without is difficult to ignore. But college graduates stood to benefit the most from both of these broader economic conditions. "Their employers are more likely to offer defined contribution retirement plans and the college-educated are more likely to participate in those retirement plans." Their stronger homeownership and retirement plan contribution rates and may be due to the fact that college graduates earn more. While nearly half of Americans say a college degree is less important today than it was 20 years ago, according to Pew, only 34% say it's very or extremely likely someone without a degree could get a well-paying job today.

Watching the reveal, I found myself involuntarily gasping as researchers Mark Chen and Barret Zoph showed off GPT-4o’s new chops. Does Your Dog Really Belong in This Restaurant?
  + stars: | 2024-05-16 | by ( Rachel Sugar | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +1 min
On a quiet weekday evening inside a restaurant in Brooklyn, a dog under a table announced its presence with a single pronounced yap. At a scoop shop in downtown Manhattan, a large white poodle was spoon-fed what appeared to be vanilla ice cream. In the dining room of a chic Midtown restaurant, a teacup Pomeranian strutted across the floor. There are 617,000 licensed dogs in New York City, and the vast majority, presumably, eat in. But while no city agency tracks how many dogs are regulars at the city’s restaurants, anecdotal evidence suggests that the number is far from zero.
