Proteccion Civil Estatal Colima (PC_Colima) via X/Handout via REUTERS/File Photo Acquire Licensing RightsCompanies Estado de Baja California FollowMEXICO CITY, Aug 18 (Reuters) - Category 4 Hurricane Hilary was rushing toward Mexico's Baja California peninsula on Friday morning, a U.S. government agency said, though it should weaken before hitting the U.S. Pacific coast this weekend. The powerful storm is threatening parts of Mexico and the south-western United States with "significant flooding" and prompted the country's National Hurricane Center (NHC) to issue its first ever tropical storm watch for California. Hilary is expected to approach the west coast of Mexico's Baja California as a hurricane this weekend but weaken to a tropical storm before hitting the U.S. state on Sunday afternoon. Rhome said California and southern Nevada faced risks from severe flooding caused by up to 10 inches of rainfall. A storm surge could cause coastal flooding and destructive waves along the Baja California peninsula, the NHC said.

KAHULUI, Hawaii, Aug 11 (Reuters) - The death toll from a wildfire that killed at least 55 people on Hawaii's Maui island was expected to rise on Friday, as search teams prepared to comb through the charred ruins of a historic resort town for more victims. "Understand this: Lahaina Town is hallowed, sacred ground right now," Maui Police Chief John Pelletier said, referring to humans remains that have yet to be recovered. In addition to searching for the missing, officials were drafting a plan to house the newly homeless in hotels and tourist rental properties. The Lahaina fire is one of three major wildfires on Maui. There was no estimate for the Upcountry fire in the center of the eastern mass of the island, Maui County said.

Rumors of a curse have persisted since Howard Carter and others found Tutankhamun's tomb in 1922. But because he'd been present at the opening of Tutankhamun's tomb a few months prior, rumors of a curse started to swirl. The Future of Rap Is Female

The Future of Rap Is Female As their male counterparts turn depressive and paranoid, it’s the women who are having all the fun. In the mid-’80s, the dynamics shifted slightly, when UTFO released “Roxanne, Roxanne,” a comical torch song dissing a woman who rejected the men’s advances. Like good sex, raunchy rap is only fun if all parties are completely enthusiastic, and this music provides necessary female perspectives to match what the men make. In Miami one weekend in late July, Rolling Loud, one of the biggest annual hip-hop festivals, made itself into a microcosm of the rap world. There’s a relentless gender pessimism in the air, too — on the street, on dating apps, in the Supreme Court and, of course, in rap music.

Burps are the top source of methane emissions from cattle. The company this spring began marketing semen with the methane trait in 80 countries. Selecting for the low methane trait could lock in lower and lower emissions for successive generations, she said. Semex is not initially charging extra for the methane trait, said Michael Lohuis, Semex's vice-president of research and innovation. Juha Nousiainen, senior vice-president at Valio, a Finnish dairy, warned that breeding cattle to burp less methane could create digestive problems.

Opinion | From Jacobites to Populists
  + stars: | 2023-08-02 | by ( Ross Douthat | ) www.nytimes.com   time to read: +3 min
It’s not that today’s populists (a few intellectuals aside) favor the restoration of an absolute or Catholic monarchy. Rather, like the original Jacobites, they represent a hodgepodge of somewhat disparate causes, unified mostly by their oppositional and outsider status, their distance from and defiance of the Whiggish metropole. As Frank McLynn points out in his history of the Jacobites, whatever specific designs the Stuarts had in mind, their movement always included a variety of competing ideological and religious tendencies. There were English Jacobites who wanted to see the Stuarts enthroned over all the British Isles. There were also plenty of opportunists, familiar from the grifter politics of our own day — smugglers and privateers seeking relief from a centralizing British state, bankrupt gentry seeking relief for their accumulated debts.

Russia's wartime economy is thriving, the New York Times reported Monday. Corporate loans have increased 19% in the year to June as investments grew, according to The Times, citing Russian central bank's figures. Russia's central bank has also been candid about its gloomy assessments of the economy — which at times were at odds with more bullish statements from the Kremlin. But, the institution has come under pressure from Moscow to give a more "upbeat assessment" about the country's economy, Bloomberg reported in February. In April last year, Russian central bank governor Elvira Nabiullina warned the country's reserves won't last infinitely.

July 27 (Reuters) - A lawsuit filed on Thursday by former Michigan State University athletes victimized by Larry Nassar alleges that its trustees voted in secret to withhold thousands of documents related to the disgraced team doctor in violation of state law. The lawsuit asked the Ingham County Circuit Court to require the board to vote publicly on whether to release the documents or keep them confidential. MSU, Nassar's former employer, previously agreed to a near $500 million settlement with the hundreds of women who were sexually abused by Nassar. USA Gymnastics and the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee, with whom Nassar also worked as a team doctor, reached a $380 million settlement. Earlier this month, Nassar was stabbed multiple times by another inmate in prison and was in stable condition.

NEW YORK, July 26 (Reuters) - Six people were injured in New York on Wednesday when the top portion of a construction crane caught fire and crashed into a Manhattan street during the morning rush hour, authorities said. [1/7]Members of the Fire Department of the City of New York (FDNY) and others gather after a construction crane caught fire on a high-rise building in Manhattan, New York City, U.S., July 26, 2023. "As you see from the debris on the street, this could have been much worse," New York City Mayor Eric Adams said during a press conference at the scene. In recent years, New York City has adopted more stringent safety measures for the towering cranes used to erect the massive buildings that define the skyline of the country's most populous city. More recently, a crane collapsed in lower Manhattan's Tribeca neighborhood in 2016, killing a pedestrian, injuring three others and crushing cars parked on the street.

“By the way,” Tomljanovic says at one point, “do we have a room?” Shortly after his daughter sealed her spot in the final eight of the world’s pre-eminent tennis tournament, Ratko was seen on booking.com, extending their stay in London. This is not the stuff of your typical sports documentary, but it is the life of a professional tennis player. “Break Point,” executive-produced by Paul Martin and the Oscar-winning filmmaker James Gay-Rees, arrived this year as a gift to tennis fans, for whom splashy, well-produced and readily accessible documentaries about the sport have been hard to come by. Perhaps this is because the narrative tropes of the genre tend toward triumphs and Gatorade showers, while the procedural and psychological realities of professional tennis lie elsewhere. The 10 episodes of “Break Point” render tennis unromantically: This is the rare sports doc whose primary subject is loss.

CNN —Over the ridge of the mountain, across the border was the promised land, the neutral territory Spain – an escape, a second chance, a future. During World War II, a perilous route through the Pyrenees mountains provided a means for hundreds of thousands of resistance fighters, civilians, Jews, allied soldiers and escaped prisoners of war to evade Nazi pursuers. Sitting down with them, Tim reflected on how this human drama played out against the backdrop of America’s role in bringing an end to World War II. Born July 9, 1923, he made his escape over the Pyrenees in July of 1944. Although Franco was sympathetic to Germany, Spain remained neutral during World War II, largely because of its dependence on US imports.

July 7 (Reuters) - Warm and cuddly are adjectives that seldom spring to mind when one thinks of rattlesnakes. The findings challenge the notion that reptiles are solitary hunters that display little in the way of complex social behavior. Ethology, the study of animal behavior, has long recognized that birds and mammals, including humans, find comfort from being physically close to their own kind. To measure stress levels in the snakes, Martin used a heart-rate monitor designed for humans. "It lets us know as humans that, hey, we're not that different from these snakes," Martin said.

June 27 (Reuters) - Tesla's (TSLA.O) electric-vehicle charging technology is being put on a fast track to become a North American standard, giving a further boost to the automaker's plan to expand access to its once-exclusive chargers. Tesla's charging technology has been gathering momentum for weeks. Volvo Car (VOLCARb.ST) on Tuesday joined General Motors (GM.N), Ford (F.N) and Rivian (RIVN.O) in embracing Tesla's charging design, shunning earlier efforts by the Biden administration to make the Combined Charging System (CCS) the dominant charging standard in the United States. Tesla calls its technology "the North American Charging Standard (NACS)," but it has yet to be approved as a standard by SAE International. Building out the public charging network will require between $33 billion and $55 billion of cumulative public and private capital investment, according to the NREL study.

SAN FRANCISCO, June 20 (Reuters) - BTC Power will add Tesla's (TSLA.O) standard to its electric vehicle chargers next year, its chief executive told Reuters on Tuesday, days after Ford (F.N) and General Motors (GM.N) sent shockwaves through the industry by adopting the technology. As a Finnish philosopher and psychology researcher, people often ask me: "What is the meaning of life?" What makes life feel worthy and valuable to you? And having lived here my entire life, I've learned that finding meaning in life boils down to five words: Make yourself meaningful to others. One of the best ways to serve others is to find something that meets three requirements: You're good at it. Helping people doesn't just feel good in the moment; it benefits your long-term health, too.
