Testing well over a dozen new electric cars has convinced me that I want one someday. New electric cars are too expensiveThe Tesla Model Y costs close to $70,000. Today, you can't find a used EV with more than 250 miles of EPA-rated range for less than $24,000. Tim Levin/InsiderUnderdeveloped charging infrastructure is widely cited as one of the top reasons more people don't buy more electric cars. Did you recently buy an electric car, sell one, or trade it in for a different brand?
Ford Motor (F) confirmed Monday what Jim Cramer has been speculating for weeks: Price cuts on its electric vehicles following similar moves by Tesla (TSLA). Depending on the models, Ford's price reduction "hurts our decision to own Ford," Jim said Monday after the automaker said the move will make some Mach-E trims unprofitable. Last year, Ford announced a split of its EV and internal combustion engine units into separate businesses — called Ford Model e and Ford Blue, respectively — aiming to increase efficiencies unique to each and maximize profits. [1/4] Ford Mustang Mach-E GT is seen during the Munich Auto Show, IAA Mobility 2021 in Munich, Germany, September 8, 2021. The move comes as electric vehicle manufacturers are feeling pressure from Tesla's price cut to respond. "Ford just cut Mustang EV prices in response to Tesla’s price cut. "Tesla’s price cut was a major blow to the prospects of competing EV models and the Mustang Mach-E directly competes with Tesla’s Model Y," said Garrett Nelson, an analyst at CFRA Research. Ford said existing Mustang Mach-E customers awaiting delivery of vehicles will automatically receive the price cut.
At least, General Motors and Ford Motor likely will be doing that this week as they report fourth-quarter results and 2023 guidance, with Wall Street watching for signs of weakening consumer demand and a tougher pricing landscape. Either issue would mean lower profits this year for the automakers, which are expected to report relatively solid fourth-quarter results over subdued year-ago earnings. Automakers have reported record results in recent years amid the tight supply of new vehicles and resilient consumer demand. Ford on Monday cut the starting prices on its electric Mustang Mach-E, weeks after EV industry leader Tesla slashed its own prices. GM is scheduled to report its results Tuesday before markets open, followed by Ford after the bell Thursday.

Tesla Inc.’s recent price cuts on its most popular models in the U.S. are reverberating through the car business, pressuring rivals and affecting purchase decisions for new- and used-car buyers. The Elon Musk-led car maker’s most recent cut—slashing as much as 20% from the price of some versions of its top-selling Model Y earlier this month—shocked Stanly Tran. The 32-year-old California psychotherapist had been on the waiting list for a Ford Mustang Mach-E electric SUV, but quickly ditched his reservation and purchased a Model Y after a friend alerted him to the price drop.
Frankie Muniz is putting his racing career into high gear. The "Malcolm in the Middle" star shared on Instagram Wednesday that he will compete full time in the NASCAR-owned ARCA Series. He first drove a race car in 2004 while participating in the annual Toyota Pro/Celebrity Race in California. "I have a lot to learn and I know that," Muniz told PEOPLE. "But I'm going in, I'm putting in a hundred percent because I don't wanna look back at this opportunity and go, man, I wish I tried harder."

NEED FOR SPEED The performance-enabled version of Kia’s EV6 is the 2023 EV6 GT, with an available 576 hp and 545 lb-ft entrained in the dual-motor all-wheel drive system. Car and Driver recorded 0-60 mph acceleration in 3.2 seconds for the GT, which is quicker in their testing than the Porsche Taycan 4S or Ford Mustang Mach-E GT Performance. IF THERE IS one rule that people infallibly remember from driver’s ed, it’s that a yellow traffic light means “clear the intersection.” My wife, Tina, has a particularly expansive interpretation of “yellow,” I’ve noticed, exercising her right-of-way at intersections unto the last millisecond of amber, while I watch through my fingers. It’s for these moments, and drivers, that Kia has purposed the 2023 EV6 GT, a low-volume, time-dilating variant of the company’s chic electric crossover.
The announcement is the latest by a U.S. government agency to speed the shift away from gas-powered vehicles to EVs. New York City currently has more than 4,000 government-owned electric vehicles and by later this year says close to 20% of city vehicles will be EVs. "Electric vehicles, they are clearly the future," New York Mayor Eric Adams said on Wednesday. New York City has about 26,000 government vehicles in service. USPS said it plans to buy at least 66,000 electric vehicles through 2028 after committing in July to buying 25,000 next-generation electric delivery vehicles.

As more car makers roll out electric vehicles, they are discovering an important trait among early customers: They are far more apt to try new brands. Nearly 80% of people who bought Kia Corp.’s EV6 electric crossover since it went on sale early this year traded in something other than a Kia, according to research site Edmunds, compared with 61% for all its models. More than two-thirds of Ford Mustang Mach-E electric sport-utility buyers had non-Ford trade-ins, compared with Ford’s 42% brand-wide average, according to the Edmunds data.

Finance has long ranked employees, but it's been out of fashion in tech for nearly a decade. Netflix once made an explicit choice to invest in underrepresented communities, Paris Marx writes. Shows like "Orange is the New Black" and "GLOW" gave spotlights to women, queer people, people of color, and non-Americans. But, according to Marx, the company stopped prioritizing stories from underrepresented communities, and new players were throwing their hats into the streaming wars. Now, Marx writes that Netflix is filled with bland shows, half-assed reality TV, and hopelessly derivative movies.
Electric cars can lose lots of driving range in freezing temperatures. Recurrent, a startup that tracks battery health, studied how 13 electric models perform in the cold. Owners of electric vehicles face an extra challenge when temperatures drop: less driving range. RecurrentAll the models Recurrent studied experienced some range loss in cold temperatures. In an analysis of 20 models, the Norwegian Automobile Association found that cold temperatures dealt an 18.5% blow to range on average and stunted charging speeds.
REUTERS/Kevin Lamarque/File PhotoBRUSSELS, Dec 8 (Reuters) - The European Union should not expect talks with the United States to resolve all the problems it sees in the U.S. Inflation Reduction Act and is not ruling out any potential response, EU trade chief Valdis Dombrovskis said on Thursday. The EU argues that the $430 billion act, which grants consumers tax credits for U.S.-produced electric vehicles (EV) and other green products, could make the United States a world leader in the EV market at Europe's expense. "And then we'll see to which extent our concerns are taken into account," he told lawmakers. At that point, the European Union would have to consider its response, Dombrovskis said, adding that the bloc did not want to enter a subsidy race. A New York man was arrested and charged on Tuesday after allegedly firing a BB gun at a Jewish father and son who were out grocery shopping over the weekend, police said. Jason Kish, 25, of Staten Island, was charged with assault as a hate crime, endangering the welfare of a child, reckless endangerment and assault in connection with the incident, which unfolded on Sunday afternoon, the New York City Police Department said. The victims, a 32-year-old father and his 7-year-old son, had been standing in front of a Kosher grocery store on Staten Island and were wearing yarmulkes when they were hit with BB gun pellets on Sunday afternoon, the NYPD said. A Tesla Model 3 vehicle is on display at the Tesla auto store on September 22, 2022 in Santa Monica, California. The data firm found that Tesla's market share of new registered electric vehicles in the U.S. stood at 65% through the third quarter, down from 71% last year and 79% in 2020. S&P forecasts Tesla's EV market share will decline to less than 20% by 2025, with the number of EV models expected to grow from 48 today to 159 by then. A drop in Tesla's U.S. market share was expected, but the rate of the decline could be concerning for investors in Elon Musk's autos and energy company. "Given that consumer choice and consumer interest in EVs are growing, Tesla's ability to retain a dominant market share will be challenged going forward."
Tech CEOs all made the same dumb mistake, and it's cost thousands of jobs. In his first remarks to Twitter employees, Musk said that the service's success is far from guaranteed and that bankruptcy is an option. Meta insiders say they have little to no visibility into who, exactly, got let go in the culling of 11,000 jobs. Shopping on social media is the wave of the future; just ask Elon Musk. Popular cars like the Toyota RAV4 and Ford Mustang aren't affordable to buy used anymore, according to a new study. For example, a three-year-old Toyota Prius will now run you $32,000. A shortage of new vehicles and other pandemic-related factors have driven car prices through the roof in recent years. "From August of 2019, well before the pandemic lockdowns started, to August of 2022, new car prices increased by almost 29 percent, and three-year-old used car prices increased by 52 percent, but incomes increased by only 13%," said Karl Brauer, executive analyst at iSeeCars. A three-year-old used car needs to cost $25,542 or less to be affordable under iSeeCars' criteria.

Vehicle data showed House’s Mustang was driving "in excess" of 150 mph, the department said.

Automakers are also investing capital in off-road models and electric vehicles. "In the transition to electric vehicles, and where do automakers put their development money, it just isn't going to convertibles." Even counting those vehicles, sales last year were down by 26% since 2015. Jim Owens, head of Ford Mustang marketing, said only about 15% of the car's sales to consumers — 72,500 units in 2019 — are convertibles. Could we see a possible convertible electric Challenger in the future?

Except it's not dying, said Kumar Galhotra, president of Ford Blue, Ford's internal combustion vehicle division. "For someone who might be nursing, I'm spending a lot of my time and investment expanding [production] capacity for all of our Ford Blue vehicles," told CNN Business. "So, to me, Ford Blue is a growth story." The new two-door Ford Mustang was able to remain all-gas-powered, Ford executives said, because the company is meeting its emissions goals with the help of electric vehicles, like the Mustang Mach-E SUV, and plug-in hybrids like the Ford Escape PHEV.
