PepsiCo said Tuesday that it's buying Mexican-American food company Siete Foods for $1.2 billion, marking the company's first food acquisition in roughly five years. Like many food companies, Pepsi has been trying to shift its portfolio to include healthier options in recent years, usually through acquisitions. Soon that will also include Siete. In August, M&M's owner Mars announced it would buy Pringles parent Kellanova in a deal valued at nearly $36 billion. California has become the first state in the nation to prohibit school cafeterias from serving foods that contain six artificial dyes tied to health and behavioral problems. Known as the California School Food Safety Act, it outlaws Red 40, Yellow 5, Yellow 6, Blue 1, Blue 2 and Green 3 from the meals, drinks and snacks served at public schools statewide. “We’re feeling really proud of the fact that we are changing the national conversation around food safety,” he said in a phone interview. A decade after the dairy discovery on strikingly intact remains mummified by the Taklamakan Desert’s arid conditions, scientists have extracted and sequenced DNA from the 3,600-year-old cheese, the oldest in the archaeological record. Fu is director of the ancient DNA laboratory at the Institute of Vertebrate Paleontology and Paleoanthropology in Beijing. The researchers recovered animal and microbe DNA from the kefir cheese discovered on the Tarim Basin mummies.
