The summary Three NASA astronauts and a Russian cosmonaut left the International Space Station on Wednesday after weeks of delays. After weeks of delays due to inclement weather, three astronauts and a cosmonaut left the International Space Station on Wednesday, wrapping up an almost eight-month stint in orbit. NASA astronauts Matthew Dominick, Michael Barratt and Jeanette Epps and Russian cosmonaut Alexander Grebenkin departed the space station at 5:05 p.m. Had Crew-8 departed at the original time, that would have left astronauts without a way to get home should an urgent problem arise. Members of the group that departed the space station Wednesday spent their time there conducting research, scientific experiments and assisting with visiting spacecraft, including the problem-plagued Starliner.

The Many Links Between Project 2025 and Trump’s WorldFormer president Donald J. Trump has repeatedly claimed that he had nothing to do with Project 2025, the Heritage Foundation’s conservative policy initiative to reshape the federal government. But Project 2025 has numerous ties to Mr. Trump and his campaign, a New York Times analysis has found. L. ZorcJump to the full list of authors, editors and contributorsSpokespeople for Project 2025 have denied that they are advocates for any particular candidate, and Project 2025 has no official ties to the Trump campaign. To limit the appearance of connection, Mr. Trump’s transition team has been excluding prominent people linked to Project 2025 from its preparations. Project 2025 additionally calls for the dismantling of the federal Education Department, which Mr. Trump has also pledged to do.

But now, as Trump lines up against DeSantis in a battle over a high-profile ballot initiative to legalize marijuana in Florida, the governor’s old ally, Jeff Roe, is working against him. The relationship, however, soured after DeSantis’ presidential ambitions went up in flames. In June, a Fox News survey found that 66% of Florida voters were for marijuana legalization while just 32% were against it — and that came before Trump said he would support the marijuana initiative. So whenever you’re going against that much money, it’s obviously a tough fight.”Jeff Roe led Never Back Down, the main super PAC backing DeSantis' presidential primary bid. “It’s obviously a different opinion than [DeSantis] has.”Other prominent DeSantis supporters are also in potentially difficult political positions.

“Losing the workers would devastate our companies, our industry and our economy.”‘The math is just not there’There is evidence that foreign-born construction workers help keep the housing market in check. “Immigrant construction workers in Sun Belt metros like Raleigh, Nashville, Houston, and San Antonio have helped these cities sustain their housing cost advantage over coastal cities despite rapid growth in housing demand,” the authors wrote. Undocumented workers would likely flee ahead of any national deportation effort, Hetrick said, even though many have been in the U.S. for well over a decade. Past as prologueLast year, the state’s Republican governor, Ron DeSantis, enacted a series of restrictions and penalties to deter the employment of undocumented workers. Many immigrant workers hastily left the state even before the policies took effect, with social media videos showing some construction sites sitting empty.

The Democratic National Committee is using the last stretch of Taylor Swift’s Eras Tour to urge young people to vote for Vice President Kamala Harris. In conjunction with her shows, the DNC announced that it is launching a Taylor Swift-themed “I Will Vote” campaign across Florida and other battleground states. Ads for the “I Will Vote” campaign will begin appearing across Miami on billboards, including a mobile billboard on a boat near Hard Rock Stadium. The advertisements will encourage young voters to embrace their “Kamala era,” the DNC said in its announcement. Before Swift backed the Democratic ticket, many of her fans had already formed the group Swifties for Kamala — which is unaffiliated with Swift, the DNC or the Harris campaign — to raise money for Harris.

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. — Florida wildlife experts are warning locals in areas battered by Hurricanes Helene and Milton to avoid dark floodwaters for a hair-raising reason: alligators and snakes. The Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission wrote on X after Milton hit: “Some wildlife, such as alligators, snakes, and bears are more likely to be seen after a storm. She warned that alligators don’t want to be near people, but if someone tries to grab them, they will snap at them. Also ahead of Milton, the Florida Health department urged people to avoid floodwaters due to exposure to Vibrio, a flesh-eating bacteria commonly found in warm coastal waters. It stirred up colonies of yellow jackets in western North Carolina, likely due to their underground nests being destroyed from rain, flood water and toppled trees.

Why so many Florida gas stations are still out of gas
  + stars: | 2024-10-14 | by ( Matt Egan | ) edition.cnn.com   time to read: +6 min
New York CNN —Hurricane Milton passed through Florida days ago, but the devastating storm is still causing chaos at gas stations. Hundreds of gas stations in Florida still don’t have gas, including roughly half of the stations in the hard-hit Tampa area. Meanwhile, the number of gas stations without gas has fallen sharply. This represents a significant improvement, although it still means that more than 1,300 Florida gas stations remain dry five days after Hurricane Milton made landfall. Florida gas stations are out of fuel following the storm that made landfall as a Category 3 hurricane in the Siesta Key area of Florida, causing damage and flooding throughout Central Florida.

Bridgette Bello thought she’d taken proper precautions to protect against Florida’s notorious hurricanes, having purchased flood insurance as well as a separate hurricane-specific policy, in addition to her regular homeowners coverage. That’s because flooding caused much of the property damage — and most homeowners insurance policies do not cover any flood impact. A resident cleans the front of his mobile home in Sarasota, Fla., on Oct. 10 after Hurricane Milton. Eva Marie Uzcategui / The Washington Post - Getty ImThe insurance industry is categorizing Hurricane Helene as an almost entirely flood-driven event. The National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP), the government-backed plan covering 95% of flood insurance policyholders in America, only covers losses up to 50% of what it deems a property to be worth — not including the land that the property sits on.

Zients also made clear that President Joe Biden had directed the Secret Service to provide the highest level of protection for Trump, the source said. A subsequent letter from Wiles to acting Secret Service Director Ronald Rowe reviewed by NBC News confirmed several of the campaign’s requests. The Trump campaign also requested that special operations forces be assigned to protect Trump, according to two U.S. officials. A defense official told NBC News that the “department continues to provide enhanced support to the U.S. Secret Service” for the presidential and vice presidential candidates. Another source said Trump is receiving the same level of protection as Biden, so the campaign should not expect more.

Restoring power, clearing debris and distributing fuel are now the top priorities in Florida as the state continues to reel in the wake Hurricane Milton. Parts of western and central Florida continue to face the risk of significant flooding in creeks and rivers continue to rise. In a “major” flood stage, the agency expects “extensive inundation of structures and roads,” with the possible need to evacuate people and transfer property to higher elevations. Water levels are expected to continue rising in the coming days, posing a major flood risk in low-lying parts of the county, officials said. Parts of central Florida are also facing elevated risks of flooding due to high water levels in the St. Johns River and Ocklawaha River.

And they are long-shot races, especially during a presidential election, when ticket-splitting isn’t as common as it used to be. In Florida and Texas, Democrats are focusing on state abortion bans to try to push beyond their recent losses in those states. The spending disparity is less stark in Florida, where in September Mucarsel-Powell’s campaign spent $8.6 million and Scott’s campaign spent $2.1 million. The Summary The tornado outbreak that Hurricane Milton spawned in Florida was a leading cause of death and damage from the storm. Hurricane Milton brought an earlier-than-expected dose of chaos before it made landfall this week, as supercell thunderstorms — which feature rotating updrafts and can produce tornadoes — raced across the state. From 1995 through 2023, just five tornadoes produced by tropical storms were rated that high. “With the initial tornadoes, that particular band of showers and storms from Milton seemed to really eject pretty far out in front of the hurricane,” Gallus said. That’s how it played out during Milton, Gallus said: The twisters “occurred right where we see most tornadoes happen.”But in Milton’s case, he noted, the tornadoes were particularly concentrated.
