Roche’s late obesity punt offers wider market cure

REUTERS/Arnd Wiegmann Acquire Licensing RightsLONDON, Dec 4 (Reuters Breakingviews) - Roche’s (ROG.S) foray into the prospective $100 billion obesity market can bring wider benefits. On Monday, the $224 billion Swiss pharma group said it had agreed to take over weight-loss drug developer Carmot Therapeutics for $2.7 billion. Market leader Novo Nordisk (NOVOb.CO) is already selling obesity drugs in the U.S. and parts of Europe. Still, Schinecker’s obesity bet could turn successful if it ends up undercutting obesity pioneers on prices. With over 1 billion people globally classed as seriously overweight, other drugmakers will follow Roche on the obesity bandwagon.

NEW YORK (AP) — A New York appeals court Thursday reinstated a gag order that barred former President Donald Trump from commenting about court personnel after he disparaged a law clerk in his New York civil fraud trial. The decision from a four-judge panel came two weeks after an individual appellate judge had put the order on hold while the appeals process played out. The trial judge, Arthur Engoron, imposed the gag order Oct. 3 after Trump posted a derogatory comment about the judge’s law clerk to social media. Political Cartoons View All 1273 ImagesTrump’s lawyers filed a lawsuit against Engoron that challenged his gag order as an abuse of power. He was arrested on Tuesday, and released on bail on Wednesday pending further inquiries. Petgrave skates toward Johnson and collides with another Panthers player. At the first two debates, Mr. DeSantis played the front-runner, attacking his opponents only when he was hit first. This has not been an easy stretch for Mr. DeSantis, in no small part because of the attacks from Mr. Trump on everything from his foreign policy credentials to his height. Mr. DeSantis has staked his bid on his performance in the state’s first-in-the-nation caucuses on Jan. 15. Mr. DeSantis offered a similar criticism of the president while campaigning in New Hampshire in October. Unless Mr. Trump makes a dramatic last-minute appearance on the stage, that seems unlikely to change.

Brookfield pounces on two new green trends

LONDON, Oct 3 (Reuters Breakingviews) - European green assets are starting to look cheap. That’s the implication of Brookfield’s $1 billion swoop on Banks Renewables, one of the UK’s largest green energy developers. Having largely deployed a $15 billion energy transition-focused fund outside Europe, the Canadian investment giant’s new geographical focus is unlikely to be a one-off. In the opening hours of the role-playing video game, it’s possible to land your spaceship on Earth’s moon or zip 16 light-years to Alpha Centauri. That sprawling celestial journey within Starfield, developed by Bethesda Game Studios, reveals both the tremendous potential and the monumental challenge of an open-world space adventure. Bethesda has hyped an expansive single-player campaign with 1,000 explorable planets. And expectations around the game, officially releasing on Sept. 6 after a 10-month delay, are nearly as vast. To compete, Microsoft went on a spending spree, acquiring Bethesda’s parent company in 2020 and agreeing to purchase Activision Blizzard in 2022, a $69 billion bet that is being challenged by regulators.
