A kids' bank account is a type of joint bank account where an adult and a minor both have access. Types of bank accounts for minorsThere are two primary joint bank account options: kids' savings accounts and teens' checking accounts. Depending on where you bank, you may need to open a traditional savings account or a specialized bank account tailored to children. A custodial bank account is not the same as a traditional kids' bank account. Some national banks permit online applications when opening a bank account on behalf of a minor, but many require opening a minor's first bank account at a physical branch.

Similarly, many states hiked their tipped minimum wages — or did away with a tipped minimum altogether. 53% of tipped wage workers earn less than $17 per hourAll that said, there are still nearly 40 million workers making less than $17 per hour. Nationwide, more than half, 53% of tipped wage workers earn less than $17 per hour, according to the report. CNN —The US Secret Service is scrambling to increase security ahead of former President Donald Trump’s first campaign rally since the failed assassination attempt on his life last week, sources familiar with the planning told CNN. “We assist the Secret Service,” a spokesperson for the sheriff’s office told CNN, adding that the Secret Service was leading all security planning for the rally. The source said the lack of these exercises have resulted in security gaps, including communication breakdowns between law enforcement partners. “The Secret Service is responsible for the security planning for presidential visits, but we stand ready to assist them with whatever they need,” Banner wrote in an email. The Secret Service would not comment on security planning for the rally or Trump.

CNN —The US Secret Service pushed back Thursday against recent criticism from right-wing media personalities and lawmakers blaming female agents for security failures during the assassination attempt on former President Donald Trump. In a statement Thursday to CNN, the Secret Service blasted misogynist claims that the female agents were incapable of protecting Trump. Such baseless assertions undermine the professionalism, dedication and expertise of our workforce,” Secret Service spokesman Anthony Guglielmi said in a statement. She is the second female Secret Service director in the agency’s history. Associations that represent women in law enforcement have also reacted to the unfounded attacks on female agents with disappointment and alarm.

The Secret Service offered me a job after many interviews, an exam, a review of my documents, and a polygraph. I worked for the Secret Service from May 1991 to June 1992. A full public assessment of Trump’s injuries is necessary, for both the former president’s own health and the clarity it can provide for voters about the recovery of the man who could become president of the United States once again. US Rep. Ronny Jackson, Trump’s former White House physician, said during an interview Monday on “The Benny Show” podcast, that he “checked out” the wound to Trump’s ear and bandaged it himself. We have worked with the Secret Service in the past and local and federal law enforcement to come up with plans about if an incident like this happened,” Rottinghaus told CNN. Muni yields are at their highest levels in years, offering significantly better compensation than in recent history. For example, let's say you're in the 35% tax bracket, comparing an 8% corporate bond to a 5.25% muni bond. Still, in 2024, municipal credit upgrades have outpaced downgrades by a ratio of 2.1 to 1, as of March 31, according to Moody's Analytics. The federal exemption for muni bond interestAmid the looming 2025 tax cliff and federal budget deficit, some experts also worry about the federal tax break for muni bond investors, Kozlik said. Although the exemption remained intact through TCJA negotiations, federal lawmakers enacted other changes that raised levies on muni bond issuers.

But one narrative has quickly taken hold in parts of the right-wing media ecosystem: The security failure was the result of workforce diversity initiatives and women working as Secret Service agents. To the Editor:Re “Judge Voids Case About Documents That Trump Held” (front page, July 16):It is rare that I read a news article that I describe as breathtaking, but Judge Aileen Cannon’s dismissal of Donald Trump’s classified documents case falls into this rare category. I may have been naïve in my belief that in the U.S. justice system, judges were in place to decide cases based on evidence and arguments before the court. The ruling highlights that individual judges are no longer arbiters but rather extensions of political parties. Steve ReichShort Hills, N.J.To the Editor:The timing of Judge Aileen Cannon’s dismissal of the classified documents case — right before the Republican convention — is so cynical and political. She must have been writing her 93-page opinion for a while, but she released it with impeccable timing to give Donald Trump a victory going into the opening of the convention.

CNN —Vending machines selling ammunition will now be in grocery stores in Alabama, Texas and Oklahoma – a move that has generated mixed feelings from officials in those states. Each machine sells ammunition for various firearm calibers, including rifles, shotguns and handguns, according to American Rounds. Earlier this month, the ammunition dispenser in Tuscaloosa, Alabama, was taken down and relocated by American Rounds. American Rounds plans to expand into more states, having already received offers from stores in California, Florida and Hawaii, among others, Magers said. It went far beyond what even the most pessimistic court observers expected; the dissenters, if anything, responded with restraint.) “Nobody’s suggesting that.” (Reality check: That is precisely what Idaho was suggesting, by arguing that federal law doesn’t pre-empt the state ban.) “Some courts have misunderstood the methodology of our recent Second Amendment cases,” the chief justice wrote, explaining why the lower court had been wrong. Behavior like this has a name: gaslighting, a form of psychological manipulation that involves making people doubt their own, accurate perception of reality. For a gun law to be compatible with the Second Amendment, the decision said, the government “must demonstrate that the regulation is consistent with this nation’s historical tradition of firearm regulation.” In other words, if the American founders didn’t pass a specific gun law in the 18th century, then we in the 21st century can’t either.

The nature of illegal lockouts means they are hard to track directly. One of the responding officers calls a sergeant over, who says there's nothing else they can do. While only 14% of lockout calls led to a police report, 86% of calls about shoplifting did. As they walk over, one of the officers tells the other to look up "illegal lockout" on his phone. New York CNN —New York University has settled a federal lawsuit with students over antisemitism on campus for a confidential amount, the university said in a statement Tuesday. The settlement brings to an end a lawsuit filed in November 2023 from three Jewish students over NYU’s alleged failure to enforce its anti-discrimination policies, claiming their civil rights were violated over the university’s handling of discrimination and harassment against Jewish students. The suit claimed there had been a “steadily increasing incidence of antisemitic attacks at NYU” over the past 10 years and said the university has failed to enforce its own policies to protect Jewish students. “NYU, by entering into this historic settlement, is to be commended for taking a leading position among American universities in combating antisemitism on campus. Other universities should promptly follow their lead,” said Marc Kasowitz, an attorney for the plaintiffs, in the joint statement.
