But over 40 years, even as their inflation-adjusted income has remained relatively flat, they’ve fallen well below the average income. In the reordering of the U.S. economy since 1980, white men without a degree have been surpassed in income by college-educated women. As the American economy has shifted over the past 40 years away from manufacturing and toward services and “knowledge” work, this less visible hierarchy within the economy has shifted, too.

New York CNN —Over the past three years, Elon Musk has met dozens of times with presidents, prime ministers, lawmakers, government officials and political candidates from around the world. Other meetings, such as a recent conversation with Argentine President Javier Milei, the world only glimpses through the billionaire’s social media posts. Recently, Musk’s political activism has begun to have a tangible impact on his companies: Brands pulled their advertisements from X, tanking its value. CNN’s analysis also suggests that Musk has, in particular, worked to develop influence among a set of right-leaning world leaders, including Modi, Bolsonaro, Milei and Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni. Now, as he campaigns for Trump, Musk may be setting himself up for his most prominent political role yet: a position in a possible future Trump White House.

Boeing machinists voted against a new labor deal that included 35% wage increases over four years, their union said Wednesday, extending a more than five-week strike that has halted most of the company’s aircraft production, which is centered in the Seattle area. The strike is costing the company about $1 billion a month, according to S&P Global Ratings. The International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers union had originally sought wage increases of 40%. The strike began as Boeing was working to ramp up production of the 737 and other aircraft. Spirit AeroSystems last week said it would temporarily furlough about 700 workers and that layoffs or other furloughs are possible if Boeing machinists’ strike continues.

Boeing 737 fuselages on railcars at Spirit AeroSystems' factory in Wichita, Kansas, US, on Monday, July 1, 2024. Spirit AeroSystems is weighing furloughs or layoffs of hundreds more employees if the Boeing machinists' strike stretches beyond Nov. 25, a company spokesman told CNBC Thursday. Further reductions would be in addition to those furloughs, but no decision has been made, said Spirit spokesman Joe Buccino. Spirit's consideration of additional furloughs demonstrates how the lengthy strike is weighing on an already-fragile aerospace supply chain. More than 32,000 Boeing machinists in the Puget Sound area, Oregon and other locations walked off the job on Sept. 13 after turning down an earlier tentative agreement.

After months of that mounting pressure — plus an investor lawsuit — Stellantis confirmed that Tavares would retire after his contract expires in early 2026. A Stellantis spokesperson said the investor lawsuit is without merit, and the company plans to "vigorously defend itself." Stellantis, in return, has filed a lawsuit accusing the union of violating the contract with its strike authorization votes. watch nowExtreme tariffs proposed by U.S. presidential candidate Donald Trump would interrupt the path of disinflation and could lead to higher interest rates, according to the head of the Institute of International Finance. "The assumption is you'll have higher inflation, higher interest rates than you would have in the absence of those tariffs," Tim Adams, president and CEO of the IIF financial services industry trade group, told CNBC's Karen Tso on Tuesday. Trump has made universal tariffs a core part of his economic pitch to voters, with suggestions of a 20% tariff on all goods from all countries and a higher 60% rate on Chinese imports. Trump has previously described universal tariffs as drawing a "ring around the country," and denied they would be inflationary. However, analysts have warned that the overall package proposed by Trump, including higher tariffs and curbs on immigration, would place upward pressure on inflation, even if some of the impact could be absorbed in the near-term.

New York CNN —The strike by 33,000 workers at Boeing will continue after rank-and-file union members rejected an offer from the company in a vote on Wednesday and decided to remain on the picket lines instead. The membership of the International Association of Machinists voted 64% against the deal, the union announced late Wednesday. “Our members deserve more,” said Jon Holden, the president of the largest IAM local at Boeing and its chief negotiator. The offer would have raised wages for IAM members at Boeing by 35 percentage points over the four-year life of the contract, with an immediate 12% raise. The number of manufacturing jobs has fallen 45 percent since the late 1990s, as factories have shuttered or moved to Mexico, China and elsewhere. Canton represents the kind of struggling manufacturing town that once churned out American products. They argue that the candidates’ proposals aren’t enough to reverse the trends — globalization, free trade agreements, automation and other technological changes — that caused manufacturing jobs to leave America in the first place. That helps explain why, despite Mr. Biden’s subsidies, the number of manufacturing jobs nationwide remains 34 percent lower than it was in the late 1970s. Modern manufacturing jobs also often require a postsecondary education.

A person rides a bicycle with a child sitting in the basket in Beijing, China July 14, 2024. The jobless rate for 16-to-24-year olds in China, excluding students, fell to 17.6% in September from 18.8% a month prior, official data showed on Tuesday, offering officials relief after youth unemployment hit fresh highs for two straight months. Youth unemployment hit a record high of 21.3% in June last year, prompting China to halt publication of the closely watched benchmark until that change was made. But a separate official survey on factory owners' confidence for September showed that firms continued to hold off on hiring last month. The rate last month for 25-to-29-year olds was 6.7%, and also excluded college students, and 3.9% for people between 30 and 59 years of age.

Accel labels these companies "founder factories," on the basis that they have become breeding grounds for talent that often go on to establish their own firms. However, most of the biggest fintech founder factories come from Europe. Asked about why Klarna topped the ranking of fintech founder factories in Europe, Bocchio said: "Klarna is an organization that is coming of age now." Nearly two-thirds (61%) of companies founded by former employees of fintech unicorns were founded in the same city as the unicorn, according to Accel. This, he said, "speaks to the maturity and appetite" of individuals within Europe's fintech founder factories.
