If so, the process of removing Prigozhin may have begun at a Kremlin meeting days after his uprising. On June 29, five days after the rebellion was called off, Putin gathered Prigozhin and his commanders in the Kremlin, according to a report in the Russian outlet Kommersant. "Reports of the meeting — and the lack of notable cases of dissension following Prigozhin's death — suggest that the meeting likely achieved its goals," Orr said. JPMorgan warned that rapid growth in artificial intelligence is no guarantee of sustained earnings increase — and could leave many companies at risk. However, this does not guarantee sustained earnings growth and [return on equity] expansion," JPMorgan analysts led by Ranjan Sharma wrote in a note to clients on Aug. 9. According to JPMorgan, AI costs are also expected to continue dropping in light of lower computing costs and the development of more open-source AI models. The company owns the e-commerce platform Shopee, the fintech platform SeaMoney and the game development studio Garena. "From our perspective, AI looks like a really big data problem," said Ben Golub, CEO of decentralized cloud storage company Storj. This startup is joined by legacy enterprises like Dell and IBM in tackling data storage efficiency for economic and environmental sustainability. For those that do go decentralized, Lewis says it's still important to maintain what he calls "centralized management of a decentralized architecture." The law – proposed and approved by Portugal’s ruling PS party – seeks to address the housing crisis in Portugal. The new law’s resolutions could potentially have far-reaching effects on those running alojamento local (AL) properties – including Portugal’s world-renowned hostels. AL properties outside of low-density areas will also see their current property taxes increase, and be subject to a new tax starting at 15%, known as CEAL. The new legislation threatens the future of all hostels in Portugal, says Miguel Santos, board member at the Associação Hostels de Portugal (AHdP) and owner of a Lisbon hostel. Pedro Nunes/ReutersOne hostel owner fearing for the future is Benedita Vasconcellos, who owns Lisbon’s Goodmorning Solo Traveller Hostel, voted Portugal’s best hostel in 2020.

"I think it really brings home that shift being a regime shift rather than a cyclical one," Katimbo-Mugwanya said. S&P said the assumption that governments would prioritise servicing debt over spending promises had rarely been tested at such high debt levels. For now, despite the steepest increases in borrowing costs in decades, investors still see little risk in holding governments' longer-term debt. POLICY WATCHGreater focus on longer-term risks should bring scrutiny of government policies. Still, with higher debt an economic reality, few governments are left with the coveted AAA rating.

Hunter Biden's legal troubles just got a whole lot worse. Meanwhile, Biden's plea deal for tax crimes and a gun charge has collapsed. The surprise announcement came as federal prosecutors suggested that a plea deal with the president's son is now effectively dead after a Trump-appointed judge refused to accept it. Many in the GOP are still furious over Weiss' role in Hunter Biden's now-potentially dead plea deal. "'[T]he parties are at an impasse and are not in agreement on either a plea agreement or a diversion agreement," prosecutors wrote in the court filing.

Ft. Pierce, Florida CNN —A Mar-a-Lago property manager and former President Donald Trump’s personal aide are set to be arraigned Thursday morning in Fort Pierce, Florida, on new charges brought by the special counsel in the case regarding the mishandling of classified documents. Carlos De Oliveira, the Florida property manager, and Trump’s body-man Walt Nauta have been charged with multiple offenses related to Trump’s allegedly unlawful retention of documents after leaving office, including classified material. Nauta, who was charged alongside Trump earlier this summer, pleaded not guilty to the charges he faced in the original indictment. The charges Nauta and De Oliveira face include making false statements, conspiracy to obstruct justice and corruptly altering, destroying, mutilating, or concealing documents. The indictment also alleges that Nauta and De Oliveira had asked an employee if they could delete security footage at Mar-a-Lago.

Poland's government, which faces October elections, is even suing Brussels over climate policies. Britain has already quickly gone from being a leader on the world stage to looking quite weak on green policies, he said. CITIZENS, BUSINESSESEurope's green policies are still more credible than U.S. ones, given see-sawing between electoral cycles in the United States, some analysts said. Rows over green policies have propelled right-wing populist parties to second place in both Dutch and German polls. "Otherwise citizens might start to feel that climate policy is always financially overwhelming and bad, and that sentiment is then exploited by populists."

Mortgage credit availability sinks to decade low

As if higher mortgage rates weren't enough, it was harder even to qualify for a mortgage in July than it has been in a decade, according to the Mortgage Bankers Association. While availability for all loan types dropped, the component of the index for jumbo loans decreased the most, as banks face increasing liquidity issues. Jumbo loans cannot be sold to Fannie Mae and Freddie Mac, so they are usually held on bank balance sheets. Higher mortgage rates have caused demand for home loans to drop. A drop in cash-out refinance programs was a major component of the overall drop in credit availability.

Its latest environmental report shows a 20% jump in water consumption in its data centers. Google just published its 2023 environmental report, and one thing is for certain: The company's water use is soaring. The numbers provide a stark reminder of the environmental cost of running huge data centers, which often require vast amounts of water to stay cool. The majority of the water Google is consuming right now is "potable," clean enough to be used as drinking water. In its latest report, Google said it takes "local water stress" (another way of saying scarcity) into account, and said 82% of its freshwater withdrawals in 2022 came from regions with low water stress.

Google on Wednesday is starting a new pilot program where some employees will be restricted to internet-free desktop PCs, CNBC has learned. The company will disable internet access on the selected desktops, with the exception of internal web-based tools and Google -owned websites like Google Drive and Gmail. Google is running the program to reduce the risk of cyber attacks, according to internal materials. "Googlers are frequent targets of attacks," one internal description viewed by CNBC states. Turning off most internet access ensures attackers cannot easily run arbitrary code remotely or grab data, the description explains.

Vcg | Visual China Group | Getty ImagesBEIJING — For foreign businesses in China, geopolitics hold more sway than new Chinese laws, according to analysts. Two new laws, one on espionage and the other on foreign relations, took effect July 1. In strictly legal terms, however, the legislative changes themselves don't increase the risk for foreign businesses in China, said Jeremy Daum, senior fellow at Yale Law School's Paul Tsai China Center. The website's translation of the Foreign Relations Law notes that foreign organizations in China "must not endanger China's national security, harm the societal public interest, or undermine societal public order." CNN —The US Food and Drug Administration is expected to decide on Thursday whether to grant traditional approval to the Alzheimer’s drug Leqembi, the first medicine proven to slow the course of the memory-robbing disease. Leqembi, from drugmakers Eisai and Biogen, received accelerated approval in January based on evidence that it clears amyloid plaque buildups in the brain that are associated with Alzheimer’s disease. But because of an earlier coverage decision by CMS, which provides insurance coverage for many elderly patients with Alzheimer’s through Medicare, the drug hasn’t been widely used. People with more advanced forms of the disease may not benefit from the drug, he said, and may face increased safety risks. Broad Medicare coverage of Leqembi and similar types of medications to slow the progression of Alzheimer’s disease would probably have a big impact on the program’s spending.

LONDON, June 6 (Reuters) - Nestle (NESN.S) is piloting a scheme to give cash to coffee farmers who grow beans sustainably as part of its plan to halve greenhouse gas emissions in its coffee business by 2030, the food company said on Tuesday. The move comes as major consumer goods companies face increased reputational and legal pressure to clean up their supply chains globally. Nestle, the world's largest packaged food company has pledged to spend $1 billion by 2030 on its plan to source coffee sustainably, which now includes efforts to boost farmer income. The company said it has, under the plan, offered some 3,000 coffee farmers in developing countries like Ivory Coast, Indonesia and Mexico conditional cash incentives to encourage them to transition to regenerative agricultural practices. These include using organic fertilisers to improve soil fertility, planting shade trees that protect coffee beans and intercropping to preserve biodiversity.
