London CNN —Russia expelled a British diplomat who worked at the embassy in Moscow Tuesday, accusing him of spying, marking the latest blow to the two countries’ worsening diplomatic relations. Russia’s Federal Security Service (FSB) alleged that the British diplomat intentionally provided false information to enter the country as a cover for espionage work, “thereby violating Russian law,” according to state media TASS. The Russian Foreign Ministry subsequently revoked the diplomat’s diplomatic accreditation and ordered him to leave Russia within two weeks, TASS reported. Russia’s FSB claimed the diplomat was sent to Moscow to “replace” one of six alleged British intelligence officers that Russia expelled this summer. Meanwhile, Russia launched a “record” 188 drone attacks on Ukraine overnight, according to the Ukrainian Air Force on Tuesday.

A potential Israel-Hezbollah ceasefire agreement and Bessent's appointment were the key contributors to the bullion selloff amid a risk-on sentiment, Shiels added. Higher interest rates tend to erode the appeal of non-interest bearing gold compared to Treasuries — a competing safe-haven asset. Gold prices fell to a two-month low right after Trump's victory before rebounding to the $2,700 levels. Similar to when the Middle East conflict first broke out, gold prices tend to react very sharply initially before correcting over time as economic factors come back into focus, Eckford added, maintaining that gold prices were still set to advance toward $3,000 in 2025.

Jorge Duenes | REUTERSDETROIT – Shares of automakers General Motors and Stellantis fell Tuesday morning after President-elect Donald Trump threatened to put 25% tariffs on goods imported from Canada and Mexico into the U.S. UBS reports the automotive industry is responsible for 26% of imports from Mexico to the U.S., including vehicles and parts, and 12% from Canada. Nearly every major automaker operating in the U.S. has factories in Mexico, however GM and Stellantis produce highly profitable full-size pickup trucks there. Shares of Toyota Motor, Honda Motor and others with production in Mexico also were down at least 1%. Trump announced he intends to levy a 25% tariff on all U.S. imports from Canada and Mexico using an executive order when he is inaugurated on Jan. 20.
