SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — A second defendant has pleaded guilty to federal charges in connection with a series of drive-by shootings at the homes of state and local lawmakers in Albuquerque after the 2022 election, the FBI and U.S. Attorney's Office announced Friday. Demetrio Trujillo pleaded guilty to criminal conspiracy, election interference and firearms-related charges, officials said. Raul Bujanda, special agent in charge of the FBI Albuquerque field office, announced the developments in a news release. Demetrio's son Jose Louise Trujillo previously pleaded guilty to illegal use of a firearm in connection with the shootings, as well as fentanyl possession with the intent to distribute. No one was injured, but in one case bullets passed through the bedroom of a state senator’s 10-year-old daughter.

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — Actor Alec Baldwin has pleaded not guilty to an involuntary manslaughter charge in the fatal shooting of a cinematographer during a rehearsal on a movie set in New Mexico. Court documents filed Wednesday show Baldwin entered the plea in state district court in Santa Fe, waiving an arraignment Thursday that was scheduled to take place remotely by video conference. Baldwin, the lead actor and a co-producer on the Western movie “Rust,” was pointing a gun at cinematographer Halyna Hutchins during a rehearsal outside Santa Fe in October 2021 when the gun went off, killing her and wounding director Joel Souza. Baldwin says that he pulled back the hammer, but not the trigger, and the gun fired. This material may not be published, broadcast, rewritten or redistributed.

NEW YORK (AP) — The Los Angeles Opera has scrapped plans for the world premiere of Mason Bates' “The Amazing Adventures of Kavalier & Clay” this fall because of finances. The work will instead open with a student cast at Indiana University's Jacobs School of Music. Cremo sent an email last month to Abra K. Bush, dean of the Jacobs School, suggesting the shift. Bates, 47, won a Grammy Award in 2019 for “The (R)evolution of Steve Jobs,” which premiered at the Santa Fe Opera in 2017 and was coproduced with the Jacobs School. “It's a story about Jewish immigrants changing American culture and certainly that resonates in LA,” Bates said.

NEW YORK (AP) — N. Scott Momaday, a Pulitzer Prize-winning storyteller, poet, educator and folklorist whose debut novel "House Made of Dawn" is widely credited as the starting point for contemporary Native American literature, has died. “His Kiowa heritage was deeply meaningful to him and he devoted much of his life to celebrating and preserving Native American culture, especially the oral tradition." Like Joseph Heller’s “Catch-22,” Momaday’s novel was a World War II story that resonated with a generation protesting the Vietnam War. Addressing a gathering of American Indian scholars in 1970, Momaday said, “Our very existence consists in our imagination of ourselves.” He championed Natives' reverence for nature, writing that "the American Indian has a unique investment in the American landscape." Audio guides to tours of the Smithsonian Institution's Museum of the American Indian featured Momaday's avuncular baritone.

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — An effort to modernize state oversight of a thriving petroleum industry in the nation's No. 2 state for oil production advanced past its first committee vetting Thursday at the New Mexico Legislature. The bill also would give regulators greater authority over applications to transfer ownership of wells that often change hands when oil and natural gas output declines. The Democratic-led Legislature and governor are being sued over alleged failures to meet constitutional provisions for protecting against oil and gas pollution, as fed-up residents living near oil wells and environmental groups turn to the judiciary for relief. Voting against the bill, Republican state Rep. Larry Scott of Hobbs, said the initiative represents an existential threat to small-scale oil and natural gas producers, echoing concerns raised by several businesses.

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — A U.S. District Court judge is standing by her decision to block portions of a public health order from New Mexico's governor that would suspend the right to carry firearms in many public parks in the Albuquerque area, with appeals pending before a higher court. The Monday order from Albuquerque-based Judge Kae Riggs denied a request from the governor to leave in place a temporary ban on firearms in some public places in greater Albuquerque, including most public parks. “Judge Riggs’ opinion ignores this caselaw and the massive amount of historical evidence in the record supporting the constitutionality of the temporary restrictions imposed by the public health order,” Hayden said in an email. The rest of the public health orders have remained intact, including directives for monthly inspections of firearm dealers statewide, reports on gunshot victims at New Mexico hospitals, wastewater testing for illicit substances at schools and more. Votes against the bill were cast by two Republican lawmakers who are pursuing impeachment proceedings against the governor for her emergency health orders on gun violence.

A new one-page indictment delivered by the grand jury Friday alleges Baldwin caused Hutchins' death — either by negligence or “total disregard or indifference” for safety. Defense attorneys for Baldwin indicate they'll fight the charge, which carries a potential prison sentence of up to 18 months. The indictment provides prosecutors with two alternative standards for the felony involuntary manslaughter charge against Baldwin. Mangels said a grand jury indictment is by no means an assurance that prosecutors will prevail at trial. “Just getting an indictment from a grand jury in no way means the prosecution has a slam dunk case or even a strong case,” she said.

SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — Two Republican legislators filed a resolution Wednesday aimed at initiating impeachment proceedings against Democratic Gov. Michelle Lujan Grisham over her emergency public health orders suspending the right to carry firearms in some public places in greater Albuquerque, such as parks and playgrounds. Gun rights advocates have filed legal challenges to the orders and are urging the New Mexico Supreme Court to block them. In the federal court system, a judge has allowed enforcement of the gun provision to continue while legal challenges run their course. New Mexico lawmakers convened Tuesday for a 30-day session and could take up a broad slate of firearms proposals from the governor that aim to reduce gun violence, including a permanent statewide ban on firearms in public parks and playgrounds.

Lujan Grisham said she'll ask the Legislature to set aside $500 million to underwrite acquisition of treated water. “We're going to turn water — this waste, which is a problem — into a commodity,” Lujan Grisham said at the conference. The fatal “Rust” shooting offered a vivid reminder that many of the guns used on film sets are real. Sometimes they are loaded with blanks — cartridges with gunpowder but no projectiles — that produce a loud bang and a flash when fired. But while live ammunition is almost always banned on sets, real guns can of course also be loaded with real bullets, which is what happened in 2021 on the day Ms. Hutchins was killed. But since “Rust,” many armorers, who are responsible for firearms safety on sets, have seen opportunities dwindle, several said in interviews. And demand has increased for alternatives to real guns.

An additional 943,000 tons should leave from Black Sea ports and 464,000 tons from the Danube by the month-end. North Korea said it placed its first spy satellite in orbit on Tuesday. Critics have said the pact weakened South Korea's ability to monitor the North's near the border while North Korea had violated the agreement. South Korea said it was suspending a clause in the agreement and resuming aerial surveillance near the border. North Korea had notified Japan of a satellite launch after two failed attempts to put what it called spy satellites into orbit this year.

People will be able to shop for Hyundai vehicles on Amazon through an agreement with the South Korean automaker. Laws in most US states protect auto dealerships from automakers who might want to sell directly to consumers. Amazon customers will be able to search dealership inventories through the Amazon website, see pricing for vehicles, and click a button to initiate a purchase. This arrangement was announced as part of a package of deals between Hyundai and Amazon, including that Amazon will provide data storage for Hyundai and that future Hyundai models will include the Alexa voice assistant. SANTA FE, N.M. (AP) — Prosecutors are preparing to present evidence to a grand jury against Alec Baldwin in the fatal 2021 shooting of a cinematographer on the set of a Western movie in New Mexico. A grand jury did not take up the case Thursday and a decision on whether to revive criminal charges against Baldwin still could be weeks away. They later pivoted after receiving a new analysis of the gun and will ask a grand jury to consider recharging Baldwin. NEXT STEPSA grand jury could weigh whether there is “probable cause” to bring charges against Baldwin as the target of the investigation. A case can’t be brought twice before a grand jury on the same evidence, so if they don't proceed this time a second grand jury is less likely.

The footage was recorded days before Baldwin's prop gun fired a live round of ammunition on set, killing cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. It isn't clear how much of the footage prosecutors reviewed or whether they reviewed any of the five videos. It is so far the most substantive film footage of Baldwin acting scenes and firing prop guns on the set of "Rust." The third video shows Baldwin in character repeatedly firing a prop gun before he runs out of dummy rounds. In the fourth and fifth videos, Baldwin stops filming to check on the safety of the crew.
